NASA Focusses in on Artemis III Landing Sites.

It was 1969 that humans first set foot on the Moon. Back then, the Apollo mission was the focus of the attempts to land on the Moon but now, over 50 years on, it looks like we are set to head back. The Artemis project is the program that hopes to take us back to the Moon again and it’s going from strength to strength. The plan is to get humans back on the Moon by 2025 as part of Artemis III. As a prelude to this, NASA is now turning its attention to the possible landing sites.  The Artemis Project is NASA’s program aimed at returning humans to the Moon and establishing a permanent base there. Ultimately with a view to paving the way for missions to Mars. With the first launch in 2017, Artemis intends to land “the first woman and the next man” on the lunar surface by 2025.  The program began with Artemis I and an uncrewed mission which orbited the Moon. Arte is II will take astronauts on an orbit of the Moon and finally Artemis III will land humans back on the Moon by 2025. At the heart of the program is the giant Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spacecraft.  NASA’s Space Launch System rocket carrying the Orion spacecraft launches on the Artemis I flight test, Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022, from Launch Complex 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Credit: NASA/Joel Kowsky. As the plans ramp up for the first crewed landing, NASA are now analysing possible landing sites and have identified nine potential spots. They are all near the South Pole of the Moon and will provide Artemis III with landing sites near to potentially useful resources. Further investigations will be required to further assess them for their suitability.  The team working upon the analysis is the Cross Agency Site Selection Analysis team and they will work with other science and industry partners. The teams will explore each possible site for science value and suitability for the mission including the availability of water ice. The final list so far, and in no particular order, are; Peak near Cabeus B Haworth Malapert Massif Mons Mouton Plateau Mons Mouton Nobile Rim 1 Nobile Rim 2 de Gerlache Rim 2 Slater Plain The South Polar region was chosen as a region was chosen chiefly because it has water locked up deep in the shadowed craters. The Apollo missions never visited that region of the Moon either so it is a great opportunity for humans to explore this aged region of the lunar surface. To settle on these 9 areas, the team assessed various regions of the south polar region using potential launch window suitability, terrain suitability, communication capability and even lighting levels. The geology team also looked at the landing sites to assess their scientific value  Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison Schmitt collecting a soil sample, his spacesuit coated with dust. Credit: NASA NASA will finally settle on the appropriate landing site based upon the decision for the launch date. Once that has been confirmed it will determine the transfer trajectories to the Moon, the orbital paths and the surface environment.  Source : NASA Provides Update on Artemis III Moon Landing Regions The post NASA Focusses in on Artemis III Landing Sites. appeared first on Universe Today.

Tony Iommi says Hard Rock Café refuses to return his guitar

The legendary Black Sabbath co-founder and guitarist Tony Iommi said that Hard Rock Café, which owns his famous red 1965 Gibson SG Special guitar, nicknamed 'Monkey,' refuses to sell the guitar back to him. The musician told Guitar World that, at the time, he thought the guitar was too valuable to continue playing and sold it to Hard Rock Café on the condition that he could buy it back if he wanted to. However, the person with whom he made the deal passed away, and now they don’t want to sell it back to him. Tony Iommi says Hard Rock Café refuses to return his guitar “The guy who used to buy memorabilia for the Hard Rock came to England and visited me. He wanted to buy some stuff and I said it should be fine. I’d retired the Monkey SG because it was too valuable to me. I didn’t want to take it on the road and risk it getting damaged." “The deal was if I ever wanted it back, I could let him know and buy it back for the same price. It seemed fair enough, a good deal." “Anyway, he passed away, so that was it. We tried to get in touch with Hard Rock to get it back and they knew nothing about the deal,” Tony Iommi said. Although he can’t get his guitar back for the same price anymore, Iommi said that the replicas made by Gibson for him over the decades are practically the same guitar, as they use the same components. That original guitar was used during the recording of classic Sabbath albums. They are "Black Sabbath" (1970), "Paranoid" (1970), "Master of Reality (1971), "Vol. 4" (1972) and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" (1973). Tony Iommi is the only member of Sabbath who was part of all the band's line-ups and releases over the decades. Thin Lizzy announce new studio album with Phil Lynott’s vocals

Thin Lizzy announced their first studio album in more than 40 years and it will have vocals of the late legendary bassist and singer Phil Lynott, who passed away back in 1986 at the age of 36. Called "Acoustic Sessions", the record has reimagined versions of their classic tracks on acoustic guitar. Besides Lynott's original vocals, the tracks also features Brian Downey's original drum recordings and the guitarist Eric Bell recently recorded new acoustic guitar parts. The unplugged version for their classic take on "Whiskey In The Jar" was already released. The entire album will be out next January 24. About the new project, Eric Bell said: "I remember recording 'Eire' from our debut album 'Thin Lizzy' in 1971. I wrote the main guitar part first on acoustic and then we built it up from there. I played the 12-string acoustic throughout the track and introduced the electric on top." "This was useful in the studio in Belfast recently where we recorded fresh guitar parts to allow us to create new Thin Lizzy acoustic versions of some of our favorite songs by recreating those original acoustic parts and adding the vocals which Philip laid down on the day and those original drum parts which Brian came up with in the original recording sessions," Eric Bell said. It's the first time since Eric Bell's exit from the band in 1973 that he recorded under the Thin Lizzy name. Track list Mama Nature Said (Acoustic Version) A Song For While I'm Away (Acoustic Version) Eire (Acoustic Version) Slow Blues (Acoustic Version) Dublin (Acoustic Version) Whiskey In The Jar (Acoustic Version) Here I Go Again (Acoustic Version) Shades Of A Blue Orphanage (Acoustic Version) Remembering Pt. 2 (Acoustic Version) Slow Blues G.M. (Gary Moore) (Acoustic Version) The post Thin Lizzy announce new studio album with Phil Lynott’s vocals appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Duff McKagan explains why bands need to take breaks from touring

Although it might sound great to travel around the world and play your music to thousands of fans who love you, tour dates are not always fun if they go on for a long time without a break. That's what Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan thinks, and he said that if a band doesn't know the right time to take a break from touring, it can even represent the end of the group. When a tour is extended, everyone gets tired and becomes less patient with everything. The musician who was also part of the supergroup Velvet Revolver, said that in an interview with Eddie Trunk recently. Duff McKagan explains why bands need to take breaks from touring "I know I had to rest (from touring for a while). I had to rest my body. A lot of hours on stage. A lot of traveling. And I've gotta listen to my body these days. I've gotta listen. So I had to rest. I think we all need to rest. Slash, he'll go out and tour, like, four weeks later and do it all over again. I'm, like, 'Okay, dude. More power to you. I'm gonna go to Hawaii.'" "You can go on a tour and you can have peaks and valleys on the tour. And we never do. Every gig is super special. Even when we extended our tour after touring for so much, extending it for another four weeks, that can destroy a band." "I've seen it happen. That's too long. You went too long. And everybody's starting to snap at each other and the crew and all that stuff. But it doesn't happen with our band or our crew," Duff McKagan said. Guns N' Roses didn't tour in 2024, their most recent show happened back on November 5, 2023 at the Hell & Heaven Metal Fest in Toluca, Mexico. Meanwhile, the guitarist Slash toured quite a lot this year promoting his latest record with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. McKagan also played live but on a few dates only, promoting his latest solo record. There is still no information about live Guns N' Roses tour dates in 2025 but Slash and Duff said many times during this year that new music by the band might be released in the future. What was Eddie Van Halen’s opinion on Steve Vai

What was Eddie Van Halen’s opinion on Steve Vai

Eddie Van Halen was one of the most influential guitarists of all time, revolutionizing the landscape of guitar playing in the late 70s. His incredible technique shocked everyone in the music scene and inspired many imitators who emulated his style. While many of these players didn’t develop their own unique sound, some took his influence further and built highly praised careers. Over the decades, Eddie didn't speak much about other guitarists, but he did share some interesting thoughts on Steve Vai. He was the one who first played with David Lee Roth in his solo band and had to emulate Eddie's style when performing Van Halen tracks. What was Eddie Van Halen's opinion on Steve Vai Curiously, Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai met each other much before David Lee Roth left the band and started his solo career. In the early 80s Frank Zappa and Eddie Van Halen, who lived close to each other became friends and Steve Vai was a member of Zappa's band at the time. So as Zappa's son Dweezil recalled a few times, there were a few interesting meetings between the two guitarists and Zappa in the early 80s. Van Halen and Vai always respected each other's work and in an interview with Shaun Baxter back in 1995, Eddie praised the guitarist. He was asked about his opinion on Vai's work on Roth's solo career. He said: “I’m going: ‘this guy is better at what I do than I AM’, you know. But [whispering] he lacked the vibe… the feel. He was technically VERY proficient, but stiff.” “It always made me feel bad in a way. Because it made me feel like, ‘Wow, is that how people perceive ME?’, ‘Cause, to me, listening to him it didn’t SOUND like me, but he took my chops, so to speak. And made them very robotic and did them twice as fast,” Eddie Van Halen said. Steve Vai was part of Roth's band from 1985 to 1989. During that period he recorded the albums "Eat 'Em and Smile" (1986) and "Skyscraper" (1988). Eddie called Steve Vai after he left David Lee Roth's band [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUBARAhO9EY[/embed] Steve Vai left David Lee Roth's band in 1989 and curiously he received a call from Eddie Van Halen. He recalled that in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2020. They had met a few years before at a Allan Holdsworth concert. However, it was only after Vai left Lee Roth’s band that they became close friends. “The day after I left David Lee Roth’s band – I don’t know how Edward found out – but he called me. That was the start of a nice relationship and friendship. For about six months, we actually hung out a lot together, and I got to know the guy. I saw his studio. He played me all these tapes and was constantly writing and playing. He played me stuff that was never released. But it was so Edward. I said, ‘Why don’t you make a solo record?’ And he always felt that the Van Halen records were his solo records. But this stuff he was playing me was really quite nice. It was all the things we loved about the way he played.” “This would be a very interesting story for guitar players, I think. I was at my house in Hollywood, and in my studio, I was using my guitar, my rig, my pedals, my amps. And Edward came in. We were just hanging out and talking, and he says to me, ‘Let me show you this one thing I was working on. And he takes my guitar and he starts playing and I realized instantly that it was Edward Van Halen. It didn’t sound anything like me. It had that ‘brown sound,’ it was everything we love about Ed’s tone. He was playing my exact gear, and it sounded like him,” Steve Vai said. During that same conversation, Vai said that only an idiot would try to play like Eddie, because it was impossible. So he never tried to play exactly like him, because it could never work.
