With the Nov. 5 presidential election fast approaching, I’m reminded of my family’s journey to American citizenship and the duties and privileges associated with it. Namely, voting.  When I was 3 years old, I moved to the U.S. with my parents as legal immigrants, all our belongings packed away in suitcases and with a couple of hundred dollars in cash.   It would take a little over 15 years for me to become an American citizen. I am casting my ballot for the first time this Election Day.   Voting is a powerful way in which citizens may voice their opinions. When Americans vote for a candidate, they are not just voting for the person to take a position in office, they’re primarily voting for the policies that the candidate supports. These policies will radically shape how our nation functions.   Over two-thirds (66.8%) of U.S. citizens 18 and older voted in the 2020 presidential election, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So, roughly 1 in 3 Americans allowed their fellow citizens to determine who would represent them.  Prior to becoming a U.S. citizen, I held different visas. At one point, I had a green card saying I was a “permanent resident.” It basically meant that I could do anything a citizen could, except vote.  I didn’t think I would ever apply for U.S. citizenship. Since India doesn’t offer dual citizenship, I would have to give up my Indian citizenship to become an American citizen.  I was born in India, and I wanted to preserve as much of my Indian heritage as possible, citizenship and all.   But, after talking to my parents, we decided that it didn’t make sense for us to remain Indian citizens if we were going to spend the rest of our lives in America. So, we decided to start the lengthy process of becoming American citizens.  The website of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services calls the U.S. a representative democracy.  In Plato’s “Republic,” the philosopher Socrates says that, in a democracy, people are so busy with their private affairs—going to work, taking care of their families, embarking on new adventures—that they have no time or energy to engage in political matters. Thus, they vote for representatives to speak in their stead.  When Americans vote, we vote for a representative—someone who shares a similar conscience to our own.  Conscience means “with knowledge.” Thus, when we vote for a candidate, we vote with the knowledge that the candidate will represent us.  If you choose not to vote, you are giving the government one less reason to fight for your beliefs. To fight for your conscience.  As a Christian, I vote not only because it is my civic duty, but also because voting is a God-ordained way of picking a representative who most closely represents my views on the matters of my conscience.   The idea of representative government comes from the Bible. In Exodus 18, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, offers a novel model of leadership: representative government. Jethro tells Moses to select capable men who can serve as judges for the people.   Why wouldn’t you capitalize on the opportunity to choose your representative?  Many Christians “check out” of politics because they claim their “citizenship is in heaven.” A study released Oct. 7 by Arizona Christian University found that an estimated 32 million regular churchgoers will abstain from voting in this year’s presidential election. Placing your citizenship in heaven does not give you the right to ignore the political sphere in the here and now.   In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus teaches his disciples to pray, saying to God the Father, “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” God’s will is being done on earth right now, but Christians must decide whether they want to participate in it.  Acknowledging your heavenly citizenship is a reminder that a better place awaits us. Until we reach heaven, however, Christians must keep working to advance God’s kingdom in a place that isn’t their final destination.   Psalm 33:12 says: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!”   How can Christians fulfill this when they choose to dissociate from political life altogether?  In Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount, he says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” As Christians, we should strive to bring peace. Former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against CBS News for $10 billion, accusing “60 Minutes” of “deceptively doctoring” its interview with Vice President Kamala Harris earlier this month. The lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas on Thursday, alleges that the “60 Minutes” edits “attempt to tip the scales in favor of the Democratic Party as the heated 2024 Presidential Election — which President Trump is leading — approaches its conclusion,” Fox News reported. After Harris’ interview on “60 Minutes,” the news show released a promotional video where Harris’ words appeared different from her statements in the interview that aired. The “60 Minutes” edit occurred when Harris responded to correspondent Bill Whitaker’s question on Israel. In the promotional clip, Harris stated, “The work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by or a result of many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region.” In the edited version of the interview that aired, Harris replied to the same question by stating, “We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.” Trump’s lawsuit blasts “60 Minutes” for allegedly glossing over Harris’ “word salad.” “To paper over Kamala’s ‘word salad’ weakness, CBS used its national platform on 60 Minutes to cross the line from the exercise of judgment in reporting to deceitful, deceptive manipulation of news,” the lawsuit states. “Millions of Americans, including residents of Texas and this District, were confused and misled by the two doctored Interview versions,” Trump’s lawyers add. After Trump and Republicans slammed “60 Minutes” for its edits in the Harris interview, CBS News responded three weeks later, writing, “60 Minutes gave an excerpt of our interview to Face the Nation that used a longer section of her answer than that on 60 Minutes. Same question. Same answer. But a different portion of the response. When we edit any interview, whether a politician, an athlete, or movie star, we strive to be clear, accurate and on point. The portion of her answer on 60 Minutes was more succinct, which allows time for other subjects in a wide ranging 21-minute-long segment.” MATT WALSH’S ‘AM I RACIST?’ NOW STREAMING ON DAILYWIRE+ Trump called on “60 Minutes” to release the transcripts of the interview, writing on Truth Social on October 7, “In normal times, what happened on 60 Minutes, (deceptively ‘doctoring’ her answers), would be THE END OF ANYONE’S CAMPAIGN! Kamala is slow, incoherent, and in no way qualified to be President of the United States. RELEASE THE TAPES FOR THE GOOD OF AMERICA. We can do it the nice way, or the hard way!” Despite being pushed by GOP senators to release the full transcript of the Harris “60 Minutes” interview, CBS News never did. Trump then threatened to sue CBS in a letter sent by his lawyer on October 21. “Instead of doing the right, transparent thing, CBS’s counsel retreated from the October 20 Statement and provided a hasty, weakly worded response letter stating that CBS would decline to provide an unedited transcript of the Interview,” the lawsuit states. “President Trump, in reply, sent a second letter (a) reiterating his demand for public release of the full, unedited transcript of the Interview and (b) serving as his pre-suit notice…” Trump is demanding a trial jury and at least $10 billion in damages, according to Fox News.

An illegal alien who allegedly opened fire on a Jewish man on Saturday in Chicago has been hit with felony terrorism and hate crime charges in addition to a list of charges he’s already facing. Chicago police announced the new charges Thursday evening against Sidi Mohammed Abdullahi, 22, after he allegedly shot a Jewish man who was on his way to synagogue and opened fire on first responders. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed to The Daily Wire on Thursday that Mohammed Abdullahi is an illegal alien from Mauritania, an Islamic country in Africa. He illegally came into the U.S. through the southern border last year under the Biden-Harris administration. Mohammed Abdullahi faces 14 additional felony counts, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and attempted murder of a police officer. Police said at a press conference that they were unable to interview him because of his condition in the hospital but a search of his phone gave them the evidence they needed to file the additional charges. The evidence obtained by investigators allegedly showed that he planned the attack and specifically targeted Jews. Abdallahi allegedly shot a 39-year-old man in Chicago’s West Rogers Park neighborhood, then returned less than 30 minutes later and opened fire on police, paramedics, and bystanders. He was caught on a neighbor’s security camera screaming “Allahu Akbar” during the second attack. A Jewish man walking to synagogue was shot in Chicago on Saturday.
