Overrun By Haitian Migrants, These Alabama Towns Could Be The Next Springfield

ATHENS, Alabama—As van loads of Haitian migrants began arriving over the summer, residents in Alabama started to wonder whether their already-swelling community could handle the influx.  Not satisfied with the answers they were getting from local officials, Jarrod and Amanda Schulte started investigating for themselves. They soon found themselves walking around north Athens, a run-down part of the city where migrants from all over the world live in dilapidated homes. “What we found was not very pretty,” Jarrod Schulte told The Daily Wire. “The city of Athens, our politicians, they all need to do better.” The Schultes and others in Alabama worry that their cities will become the next Springfield, Ohio, where a large influx of Haitian migrants was accompanied by a surge in crime and traffic accidents. Springfield made national headlines after former President Donald Trump mentioned the city during the September presidential debate, during a discussion of the impacts of mass migration on small cities across the country, not just in border states. Similar problems have arisen in Pennsylvania and Indiana, where residents worry their small cities don’t have enough resources to handle the influx. The Daily Wire traveled to Athens and spoke to more than a dozen current residents, consisting of both longtime residents and migrants. The concern is not only that migrants are impacting the lives of those who were already there, straining already scarce resources in the town, but also the lives that migrants lead upon arrival. Pierre-Marc, a 44-year-old Haitian migrant in Athens whom the Schultes befriended, is currently living alongside four other Haitian adults and two children in a rundown home in north Athens.  When Pierre-Marc first met the Schultes, the facade of his home was covered in peeling paint and dotted with cracked windows. There was no furniture in the home, and residents washed their clothes in the sink they shared. A migrant home in Athens / The Daily Wire. The Alabama cities of Albertville and Enterprise have also seen an increase in migrant workers coming to their area. As locals seek answers about the migrants’ legal status, city officials have shifted the blame to the Biden-Harris administration. “We are aware that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ program allows refugees from Haiti to be placed in our community,” Enterprise Mayor William Cooper said last month. “It is unfortunate that we as a city were given no advanced notice nor additional resources to accommodate this influx.” Cooper admitted that his city was being “taxed” by the influx, and said he was working with other communities throughout Alabama. Athens spokeswoman Holly Hollman told The Daily Wire that the city is forced to reach out to federal authorities when pressed by locals about the increase in migrants. “As this is a federal issue, Athens officials reached out to state and federal officials, including the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” Hollman said. “Federal officials have advised there are new immigrants from Haiti with federal work permits in the area, and they are here working legally in Alabama.” In Albertville, about 110 Haitian students have joined the school system of about 5,800 since June. “It’s complicated,” Albertville Superintendent Bart Reeves told the Alabama Daily News in August. “When kids get here, we want to educate them to the best of our ability and give them a first-class education. And we’ll keep doing that. But we need help. I cannot emphasize that enough.” Reeves said that the district did not have nearly enough translators to help with the influx. “We do have some translators, but certainly not the number we need,” he said. “So that’s challenging.” State Rep. Brock Colvin of Albertville told 1819 News earlier this month that the school district was still struggling to handle a wave of migration that brought many people who only spoke Spanish. Athens City School told The Daily Wire that about 669 of its 5,373 students were classified as English learners and that the district had 24 students in the system from Haiti. Superintendent Beth Patton said the district had no plans to hire any additional ESL teachers.  The Schultes say they were surprised to discover the home their Haitian friend Pierre-Marc was living in was owned by a city councilman, Chris Seibert, who owns 87 properties in Limestone County. The migrants in the house said they were paying $2,000 per month to stay in the 1,216-square-foot home, but were recently told their rent would be reduced to $1,500 per month in December, according to a text message viewed by The Daily Wire. Brenda, a lifelong resident of Athens who lived in the home for over 10 years until October 2023, told The Daily Wire that she paid just $325 to rent the home. Seibert told The Daily Wire the rent hike reflected $25,000 of repairs he made, and that the previous tenant had a specific agreement because she was on a fixed income. According to county records, the property value has increased by around $4,000 from 2023 to 2024. Seibert said that the $2,000 amount the migrants first paid included a security deposit and not their monthly rate, but did not specify what the current rate was. He did say that the rent was not fluctuating and the migrants were clear on the “amount per my property manager.” There are still issues with the home, including exposed outlets and a poor-fitting front door. Some minor repairs, including painting and plumbing, were done shortly after the Schultes started poking around. Seibert said that the property had been examined by the city and was compliant with building codes, but did not specify how the repair money had been spent. The Daily Wire spoke with several other migrants from Haiti and Latin America living at similar Seibert-owned homes, who said they paid at least $800 per month. Multiple local residents living in rundown homes told The Daily Wire that the rates they paid were hundreds of dollars less than the migrants. A home occupied by migrants in north Athens: Daily Wire. Mark Wilson, a 65-year-old African-American man who’s lived his whole life in north Athens, has been on a crusade to improve his neighborhood for years. Wilson has filed numerous complaints with the state over Seibert’s rental properties and believes that local officials are looking the other way on home maintenance. “What it all boils down to is revenue, it boils down to money,” Wilson told The Daily Wire, adding that he wants city officials held accountable.  Seibert said that his rates were determined by the market value and whether the home had been renovated. He also said that all maintenance issues were responded to when his property managers were told about issues. He added that all of the migrants in his homes were legally in the United States and that there was no assistance from the government to help pay the rent. “All maintenance issues with my company’s properties are dealt with in a timely fashion as my property managers are made aware of these issues,” Seibert said. “There is zero truth that any tenant is being exploited due to nationality or that any tenant is being charged differently due to nationality.” The housing concerns have exploded into controversy at city council meetings, with some locals demanding Seibert step down. “He has a vested interest in migrants that fill his properties, and it is unclear whether Athens citizens have been harmed by this conflict of interest,” a recent petition said. “It is also a conflict of interest for a sitting Council Member to investigate inhumane treatment of these migrants in housing properties that he owns.” Seibert says he has been the target of a “smear campaign” because of his position on the city council and says that he has spent hundreds of thousands in improvements in north Athens. “All of my company’s tenants willingly enter into an agreement to rent upon personally reviewing the property and are free to move if they are unhappy with location, price, etc,” he said. A Mexican flag flies in north Athens. Concerns about housing are not unique to Athens. In nearby Enterprise, there have been reports of migrants staying in homes that are outside of city code. In response, Mayor Cooper said that the city would be watching landlords closely. “We are holding landlords responsible. We are ensuring that everyone has access to essential services like clean, running water as well as safe living conditions,” he said last month. Similar housing issues have been the focus of the Justice Department’s investigation into Colony Ridge, a Texas neighborhood where developers have been accused of misleading non-English speaking customers about development plots sold to them without water, sewer, or electrical infrastructure. MATT WALSH’S ‘AM I RACIST?’ NOW STREAMING ON DAILYWIRE+ Locals wonder what is drawing so many migrants to their communities. Many immigrants told The Daily Wire they work at Pilgrim’s Pride or other chicken production locations. Pierre-Marc has a job working at Pilgrim’s processing plant in Russellville, Alabama, which is over an hour away. He has a United States employment authorization card that is valid until 2025. He and dozens of other migrants are picked up at Northside Church of Christ in vans commissioned by Pilgrim’s to transport the workers back and forth. An employee at Dollar General across the street from the church told The Daily Wire that he observes dozens of migrants every day being picked up and dropped off at the church. Migrant drop off in Athens after a day of work. Pilgrim’s says that its Russellville plant “had an expansion that resulted in increased job opportunities,” and that it chose to hire applicants living further away and provide transportation. “Our neighboring facility that experiences low turnover has had an applicant waitlist for quite some time. Because of this, we hired many of those individuals and provide transportation to and from the Russellville plant for our team members who live in the surrounding areas, something we have been doing for months. We are not using a hiring agency in Alabama,” a company spokeswoman told The Daily Wire. Athens residents are still wondering why the migrants are traveling over two hours every day for work, and worried that Limestone County, the fastest growing in Alabama, cannot absorb an additional influx of migrants. Communities across the country, from Indiana to Ohio to Pennsylvania, have dealt with similar issues. Enterprise Mayor Cooper said he would be working with other communities in Alabama to address the issue. “To the citizens of Enterprise: we hear you. We are as frustrated as you are that our resources are limited and taxed by this federal program,” he said. “We are working with other communities that are experiencing a similar influx. We are seeking out resources where we can, while ensuring that all city, state and federal laws are followed.”

Nervous Mom Practices Before Meeting Daughter’s Boyfriend For The Most Wholesome Reason

There are a million ways to show someone that you love them. So, when this Mom had plans to meet her daughter’s boyfriend for the very first time, she was quick to find a special way to do just that. Even early on in their relationship, it was clear that Jorge meant a lot to her daughter, Lynéa. This inspired Mom to welcome Jorge into her home, and their family, with a heartwarming greeting he’d never forget. Mom’s brilliant plan? To greet Jorge in Spanish. The reason why is because he is bilingual. In fact, it seems that English may not be his first language. Learning how to deliver the heartfelt message she wanted wasn’t easy, but Mom took the time to perfect her Spanish as best she could. The result? Oh-so sweet! Witness this beautiful moment yourself in the viral video below. @lyneaandjorge disregard the poor quality but i found this old video in my drafts from when Jorge and my mom met for the very first time and I’M CRYING #bilingualcouple #lyneaandjorge #trending #fyp #spaniardsinusa #spanish #bilingual #relationship #languagelearning #english #learnenglish #meetingforthefirsttime #inlaws ♬ original sound – Lynéa “It’s so nice to finally meet you,” Mom’s says in Spanish. “I’m excited to have you stay with us. Please make yourself comfortable. You are part of our family. You’ve made Lynéa so happy, and that makes me so happy. Thank you.” As the video shows, Jorge couldn’t have felt more welcomed into his girlfriend’s family. This seemingly small act of kindness meant the world, and it’s a moment all three of them still look back on fondly. Wholesome Footage Captures Mom Meeting Her Daughter’s Boyfriend for the First Time in the Sweetest Way “No but her accent is SO GOOD. Well done mama,” someone shares in the comments, reiterating what many others noticed. Another added, “It’s her little dance step before she starts that’s so adorable.” “How loved he must feel to know that your mum wanted to welcome him so much that she learnt it in his native tongue,” a third person points out. “Crying.” You can find the source of this story’s featured image here! New Jersey Teacher Uses Body as Human Shield to Protect Teen from Group Attack

For many young people, teachers play the role of mentors, counselors, and friends, but for one isolated New Jersey student, his teacher became a guardian. Outnumbered 5 to 1, a student at William Shemin Midtown Community School in Bayonne, NJ, was set upon by his peers, only for his teacher to intervene, shielding his prone […] The post New Jersey Teacher Uses Body as Human Shield to Protect Teen from Group Attack appeared first on Good News Network.

Door Wedge: This Small $1 Item Could Save Someone’s Life

Author of How to Prep When You’re Broke and Bloom Where You’re Planted online course I’m not overstating it when I say that this approximately $1 item could save your life or that of someone you love. It looks like a tiny, useless little thing, but I have been carrying a door wedge around for years. Who says a little bit of added security has to cost a fortune? How to use them for safety purposes Imagine your son or daughter is at school, and they hear gunshots from a distance. Having one of these wedges in their backpack to jam under the door suddenly makes them a much harder target to reach. Imagine you are at an Airbnb, and you feel a little uncomfortable with the owner you met. You know he has a key to where you’re sleeping. But you can make it a whole lot harder for them to get in with a door wedge. Imagine being at the mall and realizing that a huge mob is fighting and breaking windows. If you can get to the bathroom, a place with no windows, you can secure the door with a wedge even if there isn’t a lock. As an apartment dweller, I know that building management has a key to my place. I don’t love that idea, so I keep a wedge beside the door and shove it under as soon as I’m inside. Of course, they can serve more boring purposes, such as keeping an interior door from slamming shut every time the outside door is opened. Where do you take them? I’ve had one of these exact door wedges in my purse for years now.  I also keep one in my luggage for when I travel. It adds a layer of protection to my door in a hotel room, where anyone with a master key can enter. My youngest daughter had one in her backpack at school and now keeps one in her purse. We both always have one with us, just in case. The nice thing about a little rubber door wedge is that it can’t get you in trouble in any environment. It’s not a weapon. It’s not metal, so it won’t cause detectors to go off. TSA won’t take it away from you at the airport. You can seriously take them anywhere. How to use them If you’ve never used one of these before, it is so simple that a child could use it. All you do is close the door and slip the wedge underneath it, close to the side where it opens. They’re anti-slip and work on nearly all surfaces, including wood, carpeting, cement, and tile.   These will not completely stop a determined intruder but could slow them down. It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for them to open the door with the wedge in it. The only way they’ll get through is by breaking through the material of the door instead. That buys you enough time to grab a weapon or to improvise one. You can call 911. You can hide or escape out a window. Those extra minutes may be all it takes for you to survive. Your teenager at school can secure a classroom or bathroom door if there is a shooter. If you’re out in public and all heck breaks loose, it can be deployed under any bathroom or office door. There are all different kinds. I personally prefer the simple rubber ones like this. They’re so unobtrusive that nobody will even notice them in your bag. But there are other kinds you should note also. A lot of people like these wedges that double as an alarm. The moment someone tries to push open the door, a shrieking, piercing alarm will go off. This alerts not only you but everyone around you. These babies are LOUD. When we had a house with a door we never used because it was inconvenient, we kept an alarmed door wedge under it for extra security. I’ve never used one of these, but the Wedge-It is specifically designed with security in mind. It can be used to hold doors shut by putting it underneath, and it also works to go over a hinge and keep a door open. (Great if you have little ones – no fingers slammed in doors!) The reviews on the product are mixed, with some people finding that the Wedge-It broke quickly, and others praising it lavishly. Finally, there’s this type of wedge with the little holes in the sides. You can use this by putting a length of cord or bead chain through the hole and leaving it hanging on your doorknob when it’s not in use. Have you ever used door wedges? I have sung the praises of these gadgets for years and absolutely love them. Have you ever used one? If so, which type was it?  Do you have any suggestions for people using one? Trump, RFK Jr.’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ Pledge Signals Major Shift in GOP Priorities

DAILY CALLER NEWS FOUNDATION—The recent vow from Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to tackle public health issues together could signal a major shift in Republican priorities if the former president prevails on Election Day. Trump has called for creation of an independent commission with the input of Kennedy, the former independent presidential candidate. He also has pledged to address various “Make America Healthy Again” issues that RFK Jr. has brought to the forefront, including improving the public’s intake of nutritious foods and addressing the rising trend of obesity in adults. These concerns, in addition to other so-called MAHA priorities that have not historically found much support in the GOP—such as calling for more stringent environmental regulations—indicate that a potential second Trump administration may take a different approach on health, agricultural, and environmental issues than during the first term. Campaign officials, GOP lawmakers, and health experts previewed a diverse set of these health priorities in interviews with the Daily Caller News Foundation. Tackling the rising chronic disease rate that affects roughly 60% of American adults is a shared point of concern. “It’s finally turning the page and saying, ‘We want a health system, not a disease system,’” Dr. Robert Redfield, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said. “For 50 years we built a disease system.” “When we send President Trump back to the White House, he will work alongside passionate voices like RFK Jr. to Make America Healthy Again by providing families with safe food and ending the chronic disease epidemic plaguing our children,” Karoline Leavitt, national press secretary for the Trump campaign, said. “President Trump will also establish a special presidential commission of independent minds who are not bought and paid for by Big Pharma and will charge them with investigating what is causing the decadeslong increase in chronic illnesses.” Yes @CalleyMeans @RCamposDuffy we're going to get @realDonaldTrump back in the White House and me to D.C. to clean out corruption of our government agencies and Make America Healthy Again. #MAHA ?? pic.twitter.com/0tFjwkRlUF— Robert F. Kennedy Jr (@RobertKennedyJr) October 27, 2024 Republicans, including former Trump administration health officials, are enthusiastic that marshaling the federal government in response to the country’s myriad health crises could turn the corner on an era where Americans are facing poorer health outcomes and declining life expectancy. Redfield, the former CDC director, endorsed the idea of an independent commission on chronic disease and told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the federal government “must get more serious in preventing chronic disease” to turn that corner. “It’s much more important to get real time, continuous, day-to-day monitoring of your chronic illness, not just the way the system works now where you check in every six months and someone tells you how you’re doing,” Redfield added. “No, you’ve got to check in every day.” According to Redfield, a second Trump administration could cut the $4 trillion-plus Americans spend on health care every year by half if federal agencies take an “all-of-government” approach to targeting substance use disorder, obesity, and ultra-processed foods in addition to improving mental health services. “These are, in my view, low-hanging fruit,” Redfield said. “That alone would improve the American health system substantially.” Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, who is helping vet candidates to serve in a second Trump administration, recounted running into a swarm of British schoolchildren on a recent trade mission to the United Kingdom. Miller said it provided further confirmation that a second Trump term must take action on obesity and processed foods. “Ninety kids and there wasn’t one fat kid in the bunch,” recalled Miller, who has also called for bringing back the presidential fitness test program retired by the Obama administration in 2012. “That kind of inspired me and made me think we’re not doing something right.” To improve health outcomes for the more than 40% of Americans who are obese, Miller told the Daily Caller News Foundation, a second Trump administration should consider ending the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program coverage for processed foods. [SNAP remains popularly known as food stamps.] “Why are we paying for soda drinks and cookies and junk food with SNAP benefits?” Miller asked. “That needs to stop.” Miller also pointed to his Texas Fresh Farm program, which provides fresh and local products to more than 5 million Texas schoolchildren as a program that should be implemented nationwide to improve a portion of the public’s intake of nutritious foods. Republican lawmakers have also been supportive of a second Trump administration prioritizing nutrition as part of the “Make America Healthy Again” agenda. “As a physician, I can absolutely say that good nutrition leads to better patient outcomes 100% of the time. Healthy food is medicine and is the cure for many chronic diseases and curbing health care spending in the United States,” Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas, told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a formal statement. “American farmers set the gold standard for nutritious food, and the MAHA agenda will work with farmers and ranchers to continue producing the safest and most wholesome food at affordable prices for our country and the world.” Implementing these priorities will likely require the empowerment of federal government agencies with budgets and enforcement powers that Republican lawmakers could be inclined to shrink. Taking action on chronic disease and obesity will also necessitate buy-in from members of the public and lawmakers who have lost trust in institutions’ abilities to tell the truth and manage crises such a COVID-19 without infringing on individual autonomy. “Our failed response to the pandemic opened the eyes of millions to the capture and corruption of federal agencies by the corporate interests who are supposed to be regulated by them,” Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said. “As a result, the public’s interest is not being well served or properly protected.” “Getting public health officials in the next administration that really spend a lot of energy on trying to reestablish public trust is going to be fundamental to the success of the efforts of Make America Healthy Again,” Redfield said. “The vaccine mandates were a big mistake. Closing down our economy—a big mistake. Shutting down our schools—a big mistake. So, there was a huge loss of credibility and trust that has to be rebuilt.” Redfield said he is still a strong believer in vaccines, dubbing them “the most important gift to modern medicine,” but said vaccine mandates are a self-defeating approach and that debate about a vaccine’s safety and efficacy should be encouraged not denounced.  “I’ve always said that Bobby Kennedy is not anti-vax. Bobby Kennedy just wanted honest transparency and debate about vaccines,” Redfield said of RFK Jr. “We should foster discussion and debate, and if someone has a question about looking at data to determine a vaccine’s safety that shouldn’t be listed as anti-vax. That should be listed as wanting an honest, open discussion about ‘What is the data?’” “As we secure our borders and rebuild our economy, we are also going to Make America Healthy Again,” Trump himself said Wednesday at a campaign event with Kennedy in Duluth, Georgia. “We have more chronic health problems than any nation, more childhood diseases than we did just a generation ago. Millions of Americans are realizing that something is wrong.” “By getting this fixed not only will we have healthier families, we will save trillions and trillions of dollars and bring down the cost of health care,” Trump said. “We have a thousand chemicals in our food that are illegal in Europe, but the problem is not from those chemicals. The big problem is corruption in our federal agencies. These agencies are now owned by big Pharma, by Big Food and Big Agriculture,” Kennedy told the crowd in Duluth. “Don’t you want a president that’s going to get the chemicals out of our food? And don’t you want a president that’s going to get the corruption out of Washington, D.C.? And don’t we deserve a president of the United States that’s going to Make America Healthy Again?” Redfield also told the Daily Caller News Foundation that he’s willing to serve in a second Trump administration. “I’m in the final turn,” Redfield said. “I’d obviously work in any way I can to help the president and Bobby Kennedy and our nation move toward health.” Kennedy did not respond to a request for comment. Man Asks Roommate To Move Out Because Of His Emotional Support Dog

A man is going viral on the famous Reddit community, “Am I The A**hole? (AITA)” after sharing his dilemma about telling his roommate to move out because of his emotional support dog. In the 26-year-old man’s Reddit post, he shares that he has been roommates with a guy, he referred to as ‘Jake’ in the post, for about two years. The man shares that Jake has been a decent roommate and they get along quite well, not until recently. “Jake has struggled with anxiety for a while, and earlier this year, he got an emotional support dog, a small terrier mix,” The anonymous 26-year-old explains. “I was fine with it at first, even though I’m not a dog person, because I wanted to be supportive.” But here’s where it gets bad – “this dog has turned my life upside down” the man admits. Why, you might ask? Well, the man reveals that the dog is a very badly behaved dog. “It barks constantly when Jake isn’t home, chews on furniture, and has accidents all over the place,” the man explains. The man said he had tried talking to Jake about the problem and has also offered a few solutions for Jake to correct the dog’s behavior. “He’s always apologetic, but nothing really changes,” the man writes. Furthermore, when presented with the options to correct the dog’s behavior, “Jake claims he can’t afford it.” AJR_photo / Shutterstock.com The issue has gotten so bad that the man dreaded coming home after a long day at work. He said, “I dread coming home because I know I’ll be dealing with the dog’s mess and noise.” “I work long hours and really value my peace and quiet when I’m off, but that’s impossible now,” the man said. So, the man addresses the elephant in the room with two choices that he thinks would solve both his and Jake’s problem: move out and find a new place or get rid of the dog. However, Jake didn’t like both options, and got really upset with the man. “[He] said the dog is essential for his mental health, which I understand, but I didn’t sign up to live with a poorly behaved dog.” The man then reveals that after asking Jake to move out or get rid of the dog, their relationship has been “super tense”. He proceeds to say that Jake has been calling him heartless and is punishing him for needing support. On top of that, a few of their mutual friends are siding with Jake, saying that the man should be more understanding since it’s a mental health issue. However, the man said, “I feel like I’m sacrificing my own well-being here.” The man now asks the AITA community, “Am I the A**hole?” which the community responded with a big NO. One Reddit user wrote, “Tell all your friends they are welcome to let him and his poorly trained badly behaved dog move in. His mental health is not more important than yours!” While another user pointed out the dog’s breed and how people don’t know how to choose the right kind of dog for their lifestyle. “Terriers do bark. They’re high energy and very sensitive if you don’t train them properly, it’s a nightmare,” they wrote. Another Reddit user also pointed out how irresponsible Jake is as a pet owner. They said, “Jake isn’t being punished for having mental health needs, he’s experiencing to consequences of being an irresponsible pet owner who won’t train his dog.” What do you guys think?

How Quantum Entanglement Works and the Nature of Reality

Quantum entanglement is counterintuitive phenomenon in quantum physics where two particles become profoundly linked, such that a change in one particle instantly affects the other—even if they are separated by billions of light-years. This effect occurs regardless of the distance, meaning that an action performed on one particle will be reflected in the other, instantaneously. In 1964, physicist John Bell introduced the idea that these instant changes could indeed be real and measurable, even at extreme distances, formulating what is now known as Bell’s theorem. This theory challenged the established laws of physics, particularly the principle that information cannot travel faster than the speed of light—a principle confirmed by Albert Einstein decades earlier. Einstein famously referred to quantum entanglement as “spooky action at a distance.” What is Quantum Entanglement? Quantum entanglement hinges on a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics called superposition, which means that particles can exist in multiple states at once until measured or observed. Think of a coin flip: after flipping the coin but before looking at it, we know it will land either heads or tails, but the exact outcome is unknown. In quantum terms, this “unknown” extends further—it’s as if the coin doesn’t settle on heads or tails until you actually observe it. Superposition is essential for understanding entanglement because it shows how quantum particles do not have fixed properties until observed. Entanglement takes this concept a step further by linking two particles in a special superposition that connects them across space. In our coin example, imagine two coins, one in New York and the other on Mars, are entangled. Flip the coin in New York and observe it, and the coin on Mars would instantly “know” the result, even though it hasn’t been flipped. This entangled state between two locations is unique to quantum mechanics and defies our everyday experience. Examples of Quantum Entanglement One common example of entanglement is with pairs of photons (particles of light) emitted simultaneously from a single source. When photons are entangled, their polarizations—the direction in which they oscillate—are linked. If you measure the polarization of one photon to be horizontal, the other, when measured, will also be horizontal, regardless of the distance between them. In simple terms, imagine these photons like two dice always landing on matching numbers when rolled, no matter how far apart they are. Polarization is a property related to the oscillation of the light wave’s electric field as it moves through space. It can oscillate in various directions—vertically, horizontally, or anywhere in between. So, when entangled photons are separated, and one’s polarization is measured, the other’s polarization will match, as if “knowing” the first measurement result instantly. Is Quantum Entanglement Faster than the Speed of Light? At first glance, entanglement appears to allow information to be transmitted faster than light. If we measure one entangled photon on Earth and its pair on Pluto, it should take about six hours for information to travel between them at light speed. However, the second photon’s measurement will still match the first, no matter the distance or delay, suggesting an instant connection. However, this does not mean information is truly traveling faster than light. Scientists believe it’s not a case of “transmitting” information but rather a natural correlation set up when the particles became entangled. Think of it as two pre-agreed cards, one red and one black, shuffled and given to two people on opposite sides of the galaxy. When one person checks their card, they know the color of the other’s card without sending any information. Similarly, when we measure entangled particles, it’s as though they “knew” to match up, but nothing traveled to convey this. It shows that particles can be connected in ways that don’t fit into classical models of cause and effect or distance. This has led to numerous experiments aiming to understand if space and time are fundamental properties or emergent ones. If the principles behind entanglement are better understood, it could revolutionize theories of the universe and lead to a new framework that unites quantum mechanics with general relativity. Have Scientists Proven Quantum Entanglement? For over 50 years, scientists have tried to experimentally test Bell’s theorem. In 2015, physicists conducted one of the most precise tests to date, finding strong evidence that particles in an entangled state do indeed influence each other, supporting Bell’s theory. A 2022 study reinforced this further, showing that any realistic model of the universe that includes “hidden variables” (unknown factors that might explain these phenomena) must allow for the “spooky” influence between entangled particles. This ongoing research confirms that quantum entanglement is real and measurable, even though it still defies our classic understanding of space, time, and causality.
