On 31 October, we celebrate the holiday known as Halloween. Although the revelries and observances of this day primarily occur in regions of the Western world, it has become an increasingly popular tradition across the globe, especially in Eastern Europe and in Asian countries such as Japan and China. Conventionally, we host costume parties, watch scary movies, carve pumpkins and light bonfires to celebrate the occasion, while the younger generations are off trick-or-treating down the road. Just like any holiday we tend to celebrate, we can trace the origin of Halloween far back in time. Beyond the scary pranks and the spooky outfits, the festivities have a rich, cultural history. Celtic Origins The origins of Halloween can be traced back all the way to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain – pronounced ‘sow-in’ in Gaelic language. It was originally an event that marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter in Ireland. The day after, on 1 November, would mark the ancient Celts’ new year. Like other ancient Gaelic festivals, Samhain was seen to be a liminal time, when the boundaries separating the spiritual world and the real world were reduced. This is why Halloween has become associated with appearance of spirits, fairies and ghosts from the mythical ‘Otherworld’. Evil Spirits When the lines were blurred between worlds of the living and the dead, Celts used the opportunity to honour and worship their ancestors. Many, however, were concerned about the access darker and evil spirits had to influence those in the real world. This is why many Celts dressed their children as demons to confuse the evil spirits and marked their doors with animal blood to deter unwanted visitors. Sacrifice With newly uncovered archaeological evidence, historians are almost certain that animal, as well as human sacrifices, were made during Samhain to honour the dead and the Celtic Gods. It is thought that the famous ‘Irish Bog Bodies’ may be the remains of Kings who were sacrificed. They suffered the ‘threefold death’, which involved wounding, burning and drowning. Crops were also burnt and bonfires were made as part of the worship of Celtic deities. Some sources claim these fires were made to honour the ancestors, while others indicate that these fires were part of the deterrence of evil spirits. Roman and Christian Influence Once Roman forces had conquered a vast amount of Celtic territory by 43 AD in Northern France and the British Isles, traditional Roman religious festivals were assimilated with the pagan celebrations. The Roman festival of Feralia was traditionally celebrated in late October (although some historians suggest the festival occurred in February). It was a day to commemorate the souls and spirits of the dead, and was hence one of the first festivals to be combined with the Celtic festival of Samhain. Another festival was the day of Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. In Roman religion, the symbol that represented this goddess was an apple. It is believed that from the 9th century AD, Christianity had began to influence and displace old pagan rituals within the Celtic regions. At the behest of Pope Gregory VI, ‘All Hallows’ Day’ was assigned to the date of 1 November – the first day of the Celtic new year. The Pope, nevertheless, renamed the event ‘All Saints’ Day’, in honour of all the Christian Saints. ‘All Saints’ Day’ and ‘All Hallows’ Day’ are terms that have been used interchangeably throughout history. The eve before these dates was then called ‘Hallowe’en’ – a contraction of ‘Hallows’ Evening’. In the last century however, the holiday has been referred to simply as Halloween, celebrated on ‘Eve’ before the Day of the Hallows, on 31 October.

A woman in Carmichael, California was arrested and later released after she cut her dog’s throat and threw it in the trash on Wednesday, October 16. CBS News reports that the dog owner, identified as 41-year-old Danielle Danielle Killian, lived alone in an apartment complex on Manzanita Avenue in Carmichael with two dogs and a cat, and was the sole care provider for the animals. In a news release by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, they revealed that Killian told deputies that she felt her life would be easier if she only had one dog, and then decided to cut one dog’s throat and dump it in the trash. Deputies responded to Killian’s apartment complex on the night of October 16, after they received a report saying that a dog was found in the trash can, with something tied around its neck. Furthermore, the caller reveals that the dog had a cut around its throat, but was still alive. Killian was immediately detained at her apartment while Animal Control “took the injured dog for medical treatment and took custody of the other dog,” the Sheriff’s Office revealed. While the injured dog was fortunately still alive, the Sheriff’s Office revealed that Killian placed the dog in a shopping bag and “disposed of it in the garbage bin” at her apartment complex on October 15. “Detectives then executed a search warrant of her apartment, leading to the discovery of the knife presumably used in this incident,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote. “Killian was arrested and transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail. She was granted release on her own recognizance by the courts and has since been released from custody.” While both of Killian’s dogs are in safe hands, the Sheriff’s Office reveals that the detectives were unable to locate her cat. They also feared that other animals she may have in the past may have suffered abused, “as she told Detectives she moved around regularly, as often as once a year.” The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office urged anyone who has information of the incident or of Killian to contact them.

Don't for a minute believe that leftists are all part of one big happy family. Plenty of factors would seem to prevent such broad acceptance. What do we need to do to keep them happy? You can't even be a 60-year-old "gay progressive" state senator and walk George Floyd riots without getting beaten up by violent, radical leftists. No one will soon forget when left-wing high priestess Maxine Waters risked inciting violence when she publicly told her radical left disciples to "create a crowd" and "push back on" their political enemies and tell them "they're not welcome any more, anywhere!" The new Patch 6 update is out for God of War Ragnarok, and it contains a host of bug fixes that should make the game run smoother on a range of PC hardware. The most notable tweak, though, is improved performance on AMD's Zen 1 and Zen 2 gaming CPUs, bringing up frame rates in areas where the game was previously limited by CPU performance. Other tweaks coming to the title include fixes for tesselation with certain Nvidia drivers and previous Frame Generation glitches. It's the AMD fix that is most intriguing, though, as those early-generation Zen gaming CPUs were famously not the most capable when it came to gaming performance. They're also several years old now. so it's great to see developers still improving support for this older hardware. The next-gen AMD Radeon GPU lineup is reportedly going to be unveiled in just a couple of months, as the company gears up to take on the threat from the Nvidia RTX 5000 launch head-on. Age of Empires 2 will always have my heart. Alongside Command and Conquer, it’s one of the first RTS games that I ever played, and served as a gateway to the wider world of 4X and strategy that I remain enamored with today. Cities Skylines 2 has been my game of choice this year. I imagine Civilization 7 will capture a lot of my time in the next 12 months. But three years since it first launched, Age of Empires 4 is still a serious contender for the best medieval melee and management sims on PC. Now, Relic Entertainment confirms that new AoE 4 DLC is happening, and hints at when it will be released. The first fresh release since 2023’s The Sultans Ascend, seems like we can expect the Age of Empires 4 DLC relatively soon.
