Apple’s new Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad have USB-C

Image: Apple Apple is finally removing the Lightning port from its lineup of Mac accessories. Earlier today, the company announced a new iMac with M4 with updated versions of the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad that all have USB-C. Apple is also selling them individually in the Apple Store. All three have featured the proprietary Lightning port since 2015. The prices haven’t changed from their Lightning versions: the USB-C Magic Mouse is $99; the Magic Keyboard, which is so far seemingly only available as the larger model with a numpad, is $199; and the Magic Trackpad is $149. All three are available in black or white. USB-C aside, their designs are overall unchanged. And I regret to inform you after looking at the iMac page’s “View... Continue reading…

Google might stick a Tensor chip in the Pixel Watch 5

Leaked details hint Google might go with a custom wearable Tensor chip in 2026. | Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Starting in 2026, Google might go in-house with a custom Tensor processor for the Pixel Watch 5. The rumor comes courtesy of Android Authority, which cites leaked documents from Google’s gChips division. According to the leaked plans, the wearable Tensor chip, codenamed NPT, sports a core configuration of an ARM Cortex A78 and two Arm Cortex A55s. These are older CPU cores, but that’s a fairly typical move with wearable processors. Other than that, details are scant and it’s currently unknown which process node technology the planned wearable Tensor chip might have. Chips aren’t usually as heavy a focus for smartwatches as they are for smartphones. So long as performance is snappy, smartwatch makers tend to focus on ways to prolong... Continue reading…

Apple put the Magic Mouse’s charging port on the bottom again

Yup, it’s still there. | Image: Apple Apple’s new USB-C-equipped Magic Mouse somehow still has the charging port on the bottom. While Apple could have used the launch as an opportunity to move the charging port from the underside of the device — where the port has remained for nearly a decade, despite other updates to the mouse and being mocked for the decision — the port is still there. This new $99 Magic Mouse means that, for the foreseeable future, Apple still thinks that the best way to charge your Magic Mouse is by flipping it over to plug it in, making it so you can’t use it. Why? There have been other solutions to the ridiculous Magic Mouse charging situation. For example, my colleague Wes Davis wrote about an ergonomic grip for the Magic Mouse 2 that can charge the... iOS 18.1 now available to download: 15 reasons to upgrade your iPhone

After a few months of beta testing, Apple is finally releasing iOS 18.1 to iPhone users. This launch marks the beginning of the Apple Intelligence era. Still, even if you don't have an iPhone compatible with Apple's artificial intelligence platform, iOS 18.1 is a compelling update. For iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Pro users, the main reason to download this software is Apple Intelligence. Here's how to join the waitlist and what to do if you're stuck on it. These are the top iOS 18.1 features regarding Apple's new AI platform: Writing Tools: Users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps Improved Siri: With a new design, Siri can maintain context between requests. Even if you stumble over words or shift what you’re saying mid-sentence, Siri can understand what you actually want. Priority notifications: They appear at the top of the stack, letting you know what to pay attention to at a glance. Notifications are summarized, so you can scan them faster. Priority messages in Mail: Elevate time-sensitive messages to the top of your inbox, like an invitation that has a deadline today or a check-in reminder for your flight this afternoon. Reduce interruptions: With iOS 18.1 beta 1, an all-new Focus Mode understands the content of your notifications and shows you the ones that might need immediate attention, like a text about picking up your child from daycare later today. Email summarization: Tap to reveal a summary of a long email in the Mail app and cut to the chase. Record and transcribe calls in the Notes app: Just hit record in the Notes or Phone apps to capture audio recordings and transcripts. Apple Intelligence generates summaries of your transcripts, so you can get to the most important information at a glance. Smart Reply in Mail: Quickly draft an email response with all the right details. Apple Intelligence can identify the question you were asked in an email and offer relevant selections to include in your response. Clean Up: This Photos app feature can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo without accidentally altering the subject. Summarization: Apple Intelligence can now summarize more than just Messages and Mail notifications. Image source: José Adorno for BGR If you have an iPhone 15 or older device, there are at least five features that you should be excited about with iOS 18.1: Record calls: iOS 18.1 allows you to record calls. While transcribing and summarizing are exclusive to Apple Intelligence-compatible devices, everyone can record calls. Sleep Apnea Detection: iOS 18.1 and watchOS 11.1 include sleep apnea detection. This feature requires an Apple Watch Series 9 or newer. Control Center tweaks: After revamping the Control Center with iOS 18, Apple is adding even more new features with iOS 18.1. For example, all the connectivity toggles are now available standalone, so you can ditch Apple’s built-in option for your own solution. There are also new widgets for Apple’s own apps. RCS support expansion: While the final list remains unclear, Apple has once again expanded RCS support to more carriers worldwide. iPhone Mirroring Drag and Drop: With iOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1, Apple adds the ability to drag and drop items from the Mac to the iPhone and vice versa while using iPhone Mirroring. This feature was delayed from the original software launches. visionOS 2.1 now available with several bug fixes

After a few weeks of beta testing, Apple has just released visionOS 2.1 to Apple Vision Pro users. While we waited for some delayed features to be available with this update, Apple focused on fixing bugs. According to the company, visionOS 2.1 fixe these issues: Apple Music songs and music videos may fail to play Any project that utilizes Swift Charts fails to build when targeting iOS, macOS, or visionOS  In StoreKit Testing in Xcode, the offer identifier in the subscription renewal info might be reported incorrectly for offer codes. Users are unable to rename a voice memo while recording. We still expect visionOS 2 to add this delayed feature: Mac Virtual Display: It will feature a higher resolution and larger size, creating an ultra-wide display equivalent to two 4K monitors side by side.  In addition, a rumor expects Apple to add Apple Intelligence to Apple Vision Pro in 2025. With that, Apple’s spatial computer would be part of this AI platform, along with the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Cupertino could potentially be waiting for Apple Intelligence to launch and get its best features before expanding to another software. With visionOS 2, Apple added these functions: Spatial photos: With visionOS 2, users can revisit past memories by creating spatial photos directly from their library in the Photos app.  Home View:  Users can now personalize their Home View by rearranging apps and placing them wherever they want, including their compatible iPhone and iPad apps. Guest user: For those moments when a user wants to share their Vision Pro, a family member or colleague can be added as a Guest User and have their eye and hand data saved for 30 days. The Apple TV app brings support for multiview to Apple Vision Pro for the ultimate sports-viewing experience. Later this year, fans can watch up to five simultaneous streams to keep track of all their favorite sports and teams. To help users achieve calm and focus, the Mindfulness app includes a new capability called Follow Your Breathing that presents dynamic visual animations and sounds that respond to the user’s breathing patterns. tvOS 18.1 now available with Watchlist improvements while delaying awaited features

After a packed tvOS 18 release, Apple is being modest with this cycle's major software update, tvOS 18.1. So far, the only change spotted in this version is improvements to the TV app Watchlist. As spotted by Apple TV aficionado Sigmund Judge, Apple is adding a Watchlist to tvOS 18.1. According to him, "The new Watchlist replicates content from Continue Watching, but only the content you have yet to watch. Continue Watching features both TV shows and movies you have yet to begin, and those you have." Besides that, tvOS 18.1 was expected to add the following features: Robot vacuum cleaners are now compatible with the Home app, so they can participate in automation and scenes and can be activated by a user’s voice using Siri. Screen savers: Movies and TV screen savers are yet to be added; 21:9 support: When connecting your Apple TV to a projector, Apple will give you the option to watch content in this frame. Unfortunately, it seems Apple is delaying them for tvOS 18.2, which is expected to start its beta testing soon. With tvOS 18, Apple added these three features to the TV app: InSight: An Amazon Prime Video-like feature that displays timely information about actors, characters, and music from Apple TV+ movies and shows onscreen in real-time. Users can select an actor to view their background and filmography page or quickly view the song that is playing in a scene and add it to an Apple Music playlist. Enhance Dialogue: This feature is getting smarter, leveraging machine learning and computation audio to deliver greater vocal clarity over music, action, and background noise on Apple TV 4K. In addition to HomePod speakers, users can now enjoy Enhance Dialogue when listening through built-in TV or HDMI-connected speakers, AirPods, and other Bluetooth-connected devices, and when playing supported content on iPhone and iPad; Automatic subtitles: Subtitles now automatically appear at just the right moments with tvOS 18, including when the language in a show or film does not match the device language when users mute, or when they skip back while watching something. Alongside tvOS 18.1, Apple has also released the HomePod Software 18.1 update. It's unclear if there are new features for HomePod owners at this moment. watchOS 11.1 now available with sleep apnea alerts and these Apple Intelligence features

After a month of beta testing, Apple is finally releasing watchOS 11.1 to Apple Watch users. This marks the first major update of the watchOS 11 cycle. It was unclear what Apple was adding to the system during most of the beta period. However, late in the development, the company added sleep apnea detection for the newest Apple Watch models. This feature has been announced during the iPhone 16 event. Apple explained during the keynote that sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition where breathing stops repeatedly during sleep. “The condition, which is estimated to impact more than 1 billion people worldwide, goes undiagnosed in most cases. If left untreated, sleep apnea can have important consequences on health, including an increased risk of hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiac issues.” To detect sleep apnea, Apple Watch uses the accelerometer to monitor small movements at the wrist that are associated with interruptions in normal respiratory patterns, tracked by a new Apple Watch metric called Breathing Disturbances. While some of these disturbances are normal, they are important to track as they can be used to help understand restfulness of sleep and, when occurring frequently over multiple nights, may be associated with sleep apnea. Users can view their nightly Breathing Disturbances in the Health app, where they are classified as elevated or not elevated and can be viewed over a one-month, six-month, or one-year period. Besides that, Apple Watch users can also take advantage of Apple Intelligence features when they have their iPhones nearby. These are the two AI features watchOS 11.1 can take advantage of: Reduce interruptions: An all-new Focus Mode understands the content of your notifications and shows you the ones that might need immediate attention, like a text about picking up your child from daycare later today. Summarization: Apple Intelligence can summarize all your notifications. Last but not least, watchOS 11.1 brings some bug fixes, including one for an issue with breathing disturbance data being written to HealthKit for some users.
