Professional Footballer Passes Away At 31

George Baldock, a professional footballer who also played for the Greek national team, has passed away. He was 31. The British-born player was born in England and had Greek ancestry through his grandmother. Baldock spent seven seasons with Sheffield United, three of which in the Premier League. At the time of his death, Baldock played for Panathinaikos of Super League Greece. He made 12 appearances with the Greek national team from 2022 to 2024. According to Reuters, Baldock’s body was found on Wednesday in a swimming pool at his home in a southern Athens suburb. Police attempted CPR but could not revive him. Soccer star dies suddenly at 31. He was found floating in his pool and it appears they have ruled out criminal activity and don’t know if he had a medical episode. Can you guess what he has in common with all the others? RIP. pic.twitter.com/y7OoMg46Ku — Erin Elizabeth Health Nut News (@unhealthytruth) October 12, 2024 RIP George Baldock, 31 is no age. Sending lots of love to his family and close ones. pic.twitter.com/vIs4HQ0RBE — Jude Bellingham (@BellinghamJude) October 11, 2024 Per Reuters: Baldock, who was of Greek ancestry and was capped 12 times for the country, joined Panathinaikos in May from Sheffield United after the English side were relegated from the top flight. He also played for lower league sides MK Dons and Oxford United. Sheffield United said they were shocked and extremely saddened by the death of a popular player who spent seven years at Bramall Lane, with other English clubs sending their condolences. Baldock made four appearances for Panathinaikos, including a 0-0 draw with local rivals Olympiakos at the weekend, but had not been selected for Greece’s Nations League squad for a game against England at Wembley on Thursday. England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, a former Sheffield United player, posted a photograph of Baldock on Instagram with a broken heart emoji and RIP. “With deep sadness and pain, the national team and the Hellenic Football Federation say goodbye to George Baldock,” the Greek team said on Facebook. The police conducted a search of the residence and ruled out breaking and entering. “Additionally, a specialized team from the Police’s Forensic Investigations Directorate conducted an inspection of the residence to rule out the possibility of criminal activity,” the statement said. Athens football club Panathinaikos, which signed Baldock earlier this year on a three-year contract, paid tribute to the player, writing in a statement: “We are shocked, we feel appalled by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos mourns his sudden death. “We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock.” WATCH: Baldock’s family said he drowned while swimming. From the Associated Press: George Baldock, the Greece international soccer player who was found dead at his home in Athens on Wednesday, drowned while swimming in his pool, his family said. Greek police said this week there was no initial indication the death of the 31-year-old former Premier League player was suspicious. “We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George. We can confirm that a post-mortem examination has found that George tragically drowned whilst swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens,” Baldock’s family said in a statement issued to The Associated Press. The family said the Panathinaikos defender, who was born in Britain, had been due to return to the U.K. on Thursday to celebrate his baby son’s first birthday.

Regulators In Democrat-Led State Reject SpaceX Launches, Cite Elon Musk’s Social Media Posts

California officials rejected SpaceX’s plans to launch rockets from the state’s central coast, citing Elon Musk’s political posts on X. The California Coastal Commission rejected the U.S. Air Force’s plans that permitted SpaceX to launch up to 50 rockets per year from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County. “Even our state governments have now been weaponized against free speech,” Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reacted. Even our state governments have now been weaponized against free speech https://t.co/8M1uogbHBV — Robert F. Kennedy Jr (@RobertKennedyJr) October 12, 2024 From the Los Angeles Times: Members of the California Coastal Commission commended Space Force and Air Force representatives for reaching an agreement, but some cited their concerns about Musk, the owner of SpaceX, before rejecting the plan. Among the issues raised were Musk’s decision to insert himself in the presidential race, his spreading of conspiracy theories, the labor record of his companies and derogatory comments he has made about the transgender community. “We’re dealing with a company, the head of which has aggressively injected himself into the presidential race,” commission Chair Caryl Hart said. Military officials argue that launches by SpaceX, a leading contractor at Vandenberg Space Force Base, should be considered a federal activity because all of its launches benefit military objectives, regardless of whether the payloads being carried by the rockets are for the government or for Musk’s private satellite internet company, Starlink. I wasn’t making this up. The California Coastal Commission literally says in their reasoning that they aren’t going to approve more launches for SpaceX because they don’t like Elon’s posts on X. https://t.co/H6UBloiIAk pic.twitter.com/3C4xbhI0LV — Ian Miles Cheong (@stillgray) October 12, 2024 California regulators have blocked @SpaceX launches because they disagree with @elonmusk's politics. This is a blatant violation of the First Amendment and a gross abuse of power, even in increasingly totalitarian California. pic.twitter.com/T7YZdTb0xJ — Michael Shellenberger (@shellenberger) October 12, 2024 “Elon Musk is hopping about the country, spewing and tweeting political falsehoods and attacking FEMA while claiming his desire to help the hurricane victims with free Starlink access to the internet,” Commissioner Gretchen Newsom said, according to POLITICO. “@elonmusk’s personal political views should play no role in the California Coastal Commission’s evaluation of @SpaceX’s plans to launch rockets in the state. The commission’s objections are non-binding, but its members appear to be pushing for greater oversight over the company at least in part due to Musk’s politics. While the commission can consider the nature of SpaceX’s activities and their environmental impact, the First Amendment forbids government agencies from leveraging regulatory power to stifle protected speech,” FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression) wrote. “That was true when Florida’s government punished Disney for opposing Gov. Ron DeSantis’s education policies, it was true when a New York agency leaned on insurance companies to cut ties with the NRA because of its political advocacy, and it’s true here. No matter the politics at issue, regulatory oversight isn’t a blank check for censorship,” it added. .@elonmusk's personal political views should play no role in the California Coastal Commission's evaluation of @SpaceX's plans to launch rockets in the state. Space Launch Delta 30, which oversees military launch operations on the West Coast, said in a statement after the meeting that the Air Force has worked closely with commission staff on environmental protection issues and will continue to do so. “Today’s vote hasn’t changed the [Department of the Air Force] or Vandenberg’s unwavering commitment to preserving the California coastline and the precious species that reside there,” said Ravi Chaudhary, the Air Force’s assistant secretary for energy, installations and environment. “The Space Force’s dedication to collaboration here is in many ways unprecedented — so is our commitment to ensuring dialogue continues.” The Coastal Commission, known for its sharp-elbowed defense of public access to the state’s 840-mile coastline, has been sparring with the Air Force’s Space Force branch since May 2023, when DOD asked to increase SpaceX’s satellite launches from Vandenberg from six to 36 per year.
