Adult babysitter charged after her pit bulls mauled 1-year-old to death; her teen girl hailed as hero for trying to save baby

A 1-year-old boy was mauled to death by pit bulls belonging to the child's babysitter, who left the infant alone with the aggressive dogs and her 13-year-old daughter. The babysitter is now facing multiple felonies for the baby's tragic death. Heather Rodriguez — a 36-year-old family friend — was trusted to babysit 1-year-old Jiryiah Johnson on Monday morning. However, Rodriguez reportedly got called into work and left the baby alone with her 13-year-old daughter and three pit bulls at her home in San Antonio, Texas. 'In a house full of vicious dogs, what did this lady, this suspect, think was going to happen?'The 13-year-old and baby were inside a bedroom in the house. However, the dogs damaged the door and forced their way into the bedroom. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar described the teen daughter as a "hero" for trying to save the baby from the dogs. "I read the report in detail, and it's pretty heartbreaking. She made every effort possible, even lifting that baby up over her head, but my understanding is the dog actually climbed onto something and was able to get the baby out of her hands and tear the baby out of her hands," Salazar said of the 13-year-old girl. “The little girl, the 13-year-old, was able to maintain control of the baby, but at this point — in what’s being described to be as it was almost a tug-of-war for the baby between at least one of the dogs and the little girl,” Salazar said at a press conference."This little girl was put in a situation where she went from that bedroom to a bathroom to another bedroom and was chased every step of the way by these dogs who were continuing to bite her as well," Salazar added. The girl barricaded herself and the infant into another bedroom where she was able to call for help. "I'm considering her a hero," Salazar said of the girl. "This little girl sustained injuries herself," Salazar said. "I believe she’s going to have some lasting psychological effects as a result of it."Erika Castro — Jiryiah's mother — said, “I thank that girl because ... she did her best.” Deputies with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office weren't able to reach the children immediately once they arrived at the scene. "It wasn't until the owner of the dogs, the suspect, actually made it home and was able to get the dogs outside to allow the deputies to come in and, you know, start administering first aid to the baby," Salazar said. The baby boy suffered significant injuries to his head and throat from the dog attack. Paramedics rushed the boy to the University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead later Monday.KENS-TV reported there were blood stains on a bed, a door, and the floors.Salazar blasted the babysitter, "In a house full of vicious dogs, what did this lady, this suspect, think was going to happen?"The sheriff added, “If you have a dog like that, that you know is vicious, you know is a problem, for one thing, don’t ever bring babies into the house, especially someone else’s baby.” Salazar stated that Rodriguez “seemed more concerned with what was going on with those dogs” than taking responsibility for her actions that led to the death of a 1-year-old. 'You left my son with a 13-year-old girl. It’s pure and utter belligerence. It’s infuriating that that’s allowed. That she made that choice.'Salazar noted that Rodriguez had been cited in April for allowing her dogs to run unleashed and forcing a man to flee to his car since he was fearful he would have been attacked. "I'm furious at the fact that that she knew these dogs were problematic," Salazar declared. "Not only was she exposing her own child to this, to these unpredictable animals that had already caused damage; they were already dangerous, in my opinion. But not only that, she decided to bring a baby into that residence for the sheer profit."Salazar said he is "disgusted by the whole thing."Rodriguez initially was charged with causing serious bodily injury to the child with intent — a first-degree felony. Rodriquez subsequently was hit with two more felonies: injury to a child — reckless bodily injury — as well as endangering a child, imminent danger — causing bodily injury.Salazar was asked why the charges were not upgraded to murder, and he noted that both charges have the same penalty range as murder — between five to 99 years or life in prison with the possibility of a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted.Rodriguez's bond was set at $100,000.Salazar is calling for the dogs involved in the fatal attack to be euthanized but acknowledged that's animal control's decision. The sheriff said of the pit bulls, "My understanding is that only one at present has been fully surrendered. The other two were turned over to animal control, but I spoke to our director of public health this morning, and we're going to be pushing, they'll be pushing, and of course we'll be in a support role to see if we can go ahead and get all three dogs fully surrendered."Salazar stated that if the dogs are not voluntarily surrendered that the Bexar County Sheriff's Office would use the court process to fully seize the other two pit bulls. The grieving mother said, “I’ve been shaking, I’ve been having panic attacks.”The boy's father — Julian Johnson — slammed the babysitter for abandoning his son. “You left my son with a 13-year-old girl," Johnson stated. "It’s pure and utter belligerence. It’s infuriating that that’s allowed. That she made that choice.”A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help the family pay for medical bills and funeral costs.Like Blaze News? Kamala gaslights Americans: Taxpayers fund FREE housing for illegal migrants

The Biden-Harris administration has adamantly denied responsibility for the crisis at the border and accused those speaking out against its open border agenda of simply being “racist.” Liz Wheeler of “The Liz Wheeler Show” believes this is nothing short of gaslighting, while Turning Point USA’s Savanah Hernandez is on the ground proving her and other conservatives right. Hernandez took a recent trip to Brunswick, Maine — and what she found is incredibly damning, to say the least. Hernandez reported that “migrants are getting their rent paid for up to two years” and even spoke to some of the migrants living in the luxury apartments. “The migrants shared with us that they come furnished, so they have a flat-screen TV in there, couches, tables, and chairs, a bed. We also asked them, ‘Hey, are you paying utilities here?’ They shared with us that nope, they do not have a water bill, they do not have an electricity bill,” Hernandez explained. Not only are migrants receiving free handouts from the government, but Hernandez noted that “there is a housing crisis going on currently for residents and these buildings were initially created for Maine residents.” “But then it was decided that homeless migrants would be living here,” she said. While Maine residents can still rent an apartment in the same building Hernandez visited, they have to pay around $1,800 for a one-bedroom, and $2,300 for a two-bedroom. The average housing price in Brunswick is around $480,000. “So there was obviously a lot of outrage when it was first discovered that migrants were going to be housed here for free on taxpayer dollars,” Hernandez concluded. Wheeler is horrified by what Hernandez found. “Remember, if you criticize Kamala Harris’ open borders policy, if you rightly acknowledge that mass migration hurts your country, your state, your community, your neighborhood, and your family, then you are racist according to the left,” she says. Hurricane Milton ravages Tampa Bay cities as resourceful first responders help residents in need

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Standard Apartments was not in a mandatory evacuation zone, and when Hurricane Helene passed through the region, there was no flooding. That all changed early Thursday morning as residents weathering Hurricane Milton started to see the waters rise in the parking lots and into the first-floor apartments.By 8:00 a.m., those who did not get out before the water rose up to six or eight feet were stranded in second-floor units. Multiple calls went out for any first responders with boats or high-water vehicles to help rescue trapped people from the complex. Blaze Media was with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers who were sent to the Tampa Bay area ahead of Milton making landfall. FWC is Florida's law enforcement and research agency that protects the state's famous wildlife and resources. FWC used a swamp buggy to help the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office take people and their pets out of the flooded area.Millions of Floridians lost power, and wind damage was extensive. The task was made difficult because the water level was high enough to reach up to first responders' necks but was too shallow for bigger boats to be used. The swamp buggy offered a key advantage in that it allowed more people to be taken away in one trip, but it was also limited to the more shallow parts of the flooded zone. At first, the mission was to take only residents who wished to leave as some who lived on the second floor said they wanted to stay, but that changed after authorities expressed concerns about water messing with the electricity and potentially starting fires. The order was given to evacuate everyone out of the apartments.Within five hours, FWC, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, and Clearwater's police and firefighters ferried over 450 people out of the area. Thursday's rescue operation in Clearwater was one of the few that needed so many emergency personnel. That is because Hurricane Milton, while still a strong storm, did not make landfall into Tampa Bay. A landfall there would have been devastating as the 15-foot storm surge would have brought the water not just into the peninsula, but also to Downtown Tampa and the immediate surrounding area with a larger population.Milton landed just south in Sarasota County, demonstrating how close to an epic disaster Tampa Bay came. While the worst-case scenario did not take place, millions of Floridians lost power, and wind damage was extensive. Governor Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday morning said power had been restored to over 630,000 accounts by 6:00 a.m.Like Blaze News? CAIR suggests pro-Trump owner of Jets fired Muslim head coach over his support of Lebanon and demands 'thorough' explanation

Fans of the New York Jets were stunned when the team announced the unceremonious mid-season firing of head coach Robert Saleh, but the Council on American-Islamic Relations is adding fuel to the dumpster fire. The 45-year-old was fired Tuesday over a slow start to the team's season, which saw only two wins and three losses, as well as perceived animosity between him and their star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. 'We encourage the Jets to thoroughly explain its unusually hostile reported treatment of Coach Saleh.' CAIR pounced on a report claiming that the team's ownership had security physically walk Saleh out of their building, a decision that was seen as disrespectful and insulting. It also referenced some speculation that Saleh wearing a Lebanese flag at a game had angered the owner amid war between Israel and terrorists in Lebanon. “We commend Coach Robert Saleh for making history as the first American Muslim head coach in NFL history," read the statement from CAIR. "Although no one should jump to conclusions about why the Jets fired Coach Saleh, the report that Jets security physically escorted Saleh out of the building does raise concerns about the possible motive for such unusual hostility—especially given that Saleh wore a Lebanese flag pin at a game just days ago and that owner Woody Johnson is a former Trump administration official who has been accused of making racially charged remarks," it added. "We encourage the Jets to thoroughly explain its unusually hostile reported treatment of Coach Saleh," the statement concluded. In 2020, Johnson, who had accepted an ambassadorship in the Trump administration, was accused of racist comments against black athletes and inappropriate comments against women. He denied the accusations. The Jets will face the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football game in a home game from Rutherford, New Jersey. Like Blaze News?
