Former President Donald Trump on Thursday published a video message to the people of Florida in the wake of Hurricane Milton, which made landfall in the state less than two weeks after Florida endured Hurricane Helene. The hurricane, once as strong as a Category 5, hit the central west coast of Florida on Wednesday evening, bringing with it powerful winds and torrential rain and spawning more than 150 tornados. “Melania and I are praying for you as you face the aftermath of Hurricane Milton,” Trump said in the video message. “We are deeply saddened by the devastation being reported.” As of Thursday afternoon, Milton has already claimed four lives, and 3.4 million customers in the state remain without power. “We want God to be with you,” the former president said. “We know God is with you. Suspicions are starting to mount about the whereabouts of the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force (IRGC-QF), a designated terrorist organization, following an Israeli airstrike that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah late last month. Qaani — who replaced Qassem Soleimani after the Trump administration killed Soleimani in a drone strike in January 2020 — has not been seen in public since the September 27 strike, according to the Middle East Eye. Nearly a dozen sources throughout the Middle East told the publication that suspicions are high with Iran’s Islamic regime that Israel has penetrated the IRGC at high levels since it has been able to locate and kill top terrorists throughout the region, including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in July when a bomb was placed into his room at an IRGC compound. The report claims that Qaani is under “house arrest” and his team is under investigation as officials seek to find the source of the Israeli breach into the IRGC. Sky News Arabia reported that during his interrogation on Thursday, Qaani suffered a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. However, a semi-official news agency linked to the IRGC said this week that Qaani was set to soon receive a medal from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “Commander Qaani is in perfect health and will receive the Fath medal from the Supreme Leader in the coming days,” Ebrahim Jabbari, an adviser to Qaani, told Tasnim.

Just weeks before Election Day, the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits has increased to the highest level in more than a year. In a news release on Thursday, the U.S. Department of Labor announced that, for the week ending October 5, there were 258,000 jobless claims, up 33,000 from the previous week’s 225,000 claims. This is the highest number of jobless claims since the week of August 5, 2023. The Associated Press spoke to analysts who blamed the increase on Hurricane Helene, but a Daily Wire review of the initial claims filed for the past week shows that is not the whole story. North Carolina, which suffered the most under Hurricane Helene, saw a 290% increase in jobless claims – 8,534 more than the previous week. While North Carolina saw the largest percentage jump, Michigan – which was unaffected by Helene – also saw a large percentage increase of 140%, and had the highest single jump in jobless claims at 9,490. California, which was also not affected by the hurricane, had the third highest increase in claims at 4,484. Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee, which were also damaged by Helene, saw a 69%, 83%, and 72% increase in jobless claims, respectively. Kentucky also had a large percentage increase (146%) due to damage from the hurricane, though its effects have not been extensively covered by the media. Alabama and Georgia, which were also hit by Hurricane Helene, each saw fewer than 1,000 new jobless claims. The increase from those states affected by the hurricane only adds up to 18,210 new claims – or a little more than half of the rise in applications for unemployment benefits filed last week. Another factor the AP noted was the continuous effect of high interest rates on the labor market. Between 2022 and 2023, the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates repeatedly until the federal funds rate hit a two-decade high of 5.3%. This pushed mortgage rates up to 8%, making the housing market crisis worse for buyers and having little to no effect on inflation. The Fed has recently started lowering interest rates, reducing it by half a percentage point last month. According to the AP, the Fed’s goal is to bring down inflation without causing a recession, even though many Americans are struggling to pay bills now. The federal government on Thursday also reported that inflation has reached its lowest point since February 2021, just after President Joe Biden took office, the Associated Press reported. What that actually means is that inflation is still rising, but rose slower than it has in three years. Inflation rose by 2.4% last month from a year earlier, which was the smallest annual increase since February 2021. So, while the media may report that inflation is going down, prices are still rising.

The state had already been hit by Hurricane Helene less than two weeks ago, and cleanup efforts were ongoing when the latest storm hit. The National Hurricane Center announced that the storm’s eye made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane near Siesta Key in Sarasota County at 8:30 p.m. ET. Hurricane Helene hit Florida as a “major” Category 4 hurricane late last month. The storm traveled across Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia, contributing to the deaths of at least 227 people. Entire towns were destroyed, and millions lost power, cell phone service, and running water. 

A former CBS News reporter said this week that the network has a history of releasing full transcripts of interviews with top Republicans. The comments come as the network deals with a scandal involving its flagship weekly news program, “60 Minutes,” which deceptively edited remarks Vice President Kamala Harris made during an interview that aired this week. “As Trump campaign calls on @60Minutes to release ‘full, unedited transcript’ of Kamala Harris interview… There is precedent,” journalist Catherine Herridge posted on X. “When I interviewed then President Trump in July 2020 @CBSNews we posted the interview transcript.” She noted that the transcript that the network released was of the full interview, not just of what aired on television. In a promotional clip that was posted by CBS News on Sunday, Harris responded to that statement from Whitaker by saying: “The work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by or a result of many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region.” However, when the full interview was published by the network on Monday night, that statement from Harris was nowhere to be found. Those words were not included anywhere in the television broadcast, nor did they appear in the interview when it was posted on YouTube, the interview’s transcript, or the show’s “Overtime” segment. Instead, on television and in the interview posted online, Whitaker’s identical statement that “it seems that Prime Minister Netanyahu is not listening” is followed by Harris saying: “We are not gonna stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.”
