An outdoorsman and mushroom hunter observes a bipedal, short humanoid walking through the woods. He eventually realizes that this is not a woodland animal.The following account was forwarded to me:"I will be the first to admit I thought these types of sightings were a joke and not real and I've never been able to take them seriously.I am an outdoorsman and have been for 35 years. I grew up in the woods. I memorize trees for mushroom hunting for a living. I know every brook, stream, bush, berry grove, log, you name it. Because of this, I want to keep my location private.I'm on a forest road and not a soul in sight. I gather some mushrooms and look up the road and see a rock has fallen from the loose, steep side of the mountain to the middle of the road. I mentally note that I have to move it and not drive over it. I gather my mushrooms and get back to the car.I look up and I see what appears to be a 2 or 2.5-foot-tall little brown thing walking from the side of the road over to the rock. My first logical thought is that it is a squirrel, but I see it is walking on two legs, appears to be wearing brown cloth or fur clothes, and is shaped like a human but very tiny. It's not scurrying either, it is ambling on two legs like a human would. Just casually walking like this is some normal, regular thing, like the monotonous work it does for a living.I don't believe my lying eyes. It has to be something else. I get back in the car and head up the road and see that the rock has been pushed back to the side of the road from whence it came. It had fallen off the hill, rolled to my left, and then was sitting back on the other side of the road on the right. There are drag marks like someone slid it back.I look, I smell, I sense, I listen. Nothing.I don't know where gnomes live, but the old partially logged section where I was looked pretty perfect for a clan of these things. Lots of places to hide, secluded, near water, plenty of routes of escape, and would be easy to dig little holes in the mountain and be fortified against invaders. The side road into it was flooded and appears to do so regularly so these little guys even have their own moat.I'm positive I'm overthinking this. It was a long drive back up the mountain, then down the mountain the other way, and sometimes home, and I can't pick this apart into anything else but being a tiny little forest man. I'm like 1000% positive that I saw what I saw.It was near a military 'special interest' zone allegedly blocked off due to some native butterflies, but I'm starting to wonder if this research area is really about butterflies after all. One of my Finnish readers, Tapio Mäkinen, alerted me to an expedition to the Waldviertel region of Austria in search of the Alp. At the time, he was looking for interested parties to join him once he arrived on location.His description of this cryptid (edited for comprehension): "For you who not are familiar with the Alp it's an ancient creature. It's described in old books and art like "Nachtmahr" (“Night-mare”) by Johann Heinrich Füssli (1802). It was first mentioned in the 16th century and most of the myths about this creature were made up during the 19th century.The Alp is a sort of huge bat with humanoid features with longer legs and arms. Since there are no clear pictures of this creature one has to rely on eyewitnesses when it comes to its appearance.It's covered in fur and is believed to be closely related to flying foxes. The humanoid features are hard to explain but it might be a misunderstanding (it has arms). Most likely it's a thicker part of the humerus and radius bone that might look like arms.The size of the Alp is disputed and there is a misconception that they are the same size as a full-grown man. There is no evidence that this would be the case, quite the opposite. The proportion between the body and the wings is 1:5 or 1:6. An Alp the same size as a full-grown man would need a wingspan of about 10 meters to fly. This has never been recorded. The wingspan is more likely 4-5 meters and this would give it a length of about one meter.There are many differences between a flying fox and an Alp but this is the closest relative. The wingspan of a flying fox is just under 2 meters, so the Alp is bigger.Pteropus or Flying FoxThe myth about the Alp being a vampire originates from the myths about vampire bats. There are bloodsucking bats but they are very rare. It was during the 19th century the myths about the Alp as a vampire began. There were no records of the Alp being a bloodsucker before 1817. The myths about vampires from the 18th century through the beginning of the 19th century incorporate other creatures and present them as vampires. The story that the Alp is a blood-sucking vampire has never been proven. There are also myths about the Alp being a shapeshifter and haunting its victims by entering their minds and giving them nightmares (the appearance of the Alp is enough to give you nightmares, I'll admit that).My extensive research shows that the Alp is a distant relative of the flying fox. It's extremely shy and has a very long lifespan. Some creatures can reach almost 200 years. The explanation that the remains of a dead Alp have never been found is that it's a very small population, they live long and in isolated areas. There are probably only 6-8 individuals left and they are spread out over central and eastern Europe. Where they breed, how they nest and other questions remain unknown."THE ALP - DEMON OF NIGHTMARESThe Alp, from German lore, is a vampiric spirit, or demon, who can shape-shift.
