After Helene, Even Restoring Internet Service Is Political

In the days since Hurricane Helene left a swath of destruction across the Southeastern United States, former President Donald J. Trump has praised the tech billionaire Elon Musk for what he has described as Mr. Musk’s personal efforts and extragovernmental largess to bring internet service back to hard-hit rural areas. The reality is more complicated. While Starlink, the satellite service operated by Mr. Musk’s company SpaceX, has given hundreds of free devices and a window of free internet...

Former Memphis Police Officers Not Guilty of Most Serious Charge in Tyre Nichols’s Death

Three former Memphis police officers were convicted of obstructing justice in the 2023 death of Tyre Nichols, but acquitted on the most serious civil rights charge in a federal trial that lasted about a month.  A Tennessee jury deliberated for about six hours Thursday afternoon before returning a mixed verdict against former officers Tadarrius Bean, Justin Smith and Demetrius Haley.

Opinion: Trump and Vance seem very upset with being fact-checked. Maybe lie less?

The most conspicuous fault line in 2024's very peculiar presidential election has to be the histrionics Donald Trump and JD Vance have shown us about fact-checking during debates. The former one-term president and his running mate, a senator from Ohio, cast accuracy as the real looming threat to democracy in America last month and again after Tuesday's vice presidential debate. Their opponents, Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, by contrast...

Fact Check: Correcting Walz's Debate Lies on the Border Crisis, Abortion

Let's examine two claims made by Gov. Tim Walz during his debate loss to Sen. JD Vance on Tuesday.  We could rebut and contest even more assertions and statements, of course, as Walz's cascade of dishonesty has caused even NBC News to ask if the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee has "a problem with the truth."  But for the purposes of this post, let's stick to the substance issues of the border crisis and abortion.  During an exchange on immigration, Walz denied that Kamala...

Fact Check: Did Kamala Harris Offer Hurricane Helene Victims $750?

Donald Trump Jr. was one of multiple high-profile Republicans who criticized Vice President Kamala Harris following her visit to see Hurricane Helene's damage in Georgia Wednesday, claiming she only offered those affected $750. The Democratic presidential candidate mentioned the money during a speech in Augusta, sparking outrage from those on the right who said it was all she was offering to those impacted by the disaster.
