Even though this region is more than 300 miles inland, the storm hit the town really hard. Arielle   Yeah, it’s been really heartbreaking. Homes are destroyed, power is out, people are displaced—it’s, to put it lightly, a rough situation. But in times like these, communities can really come together, and there are some practical and immediate ways we can all help. You can find a few of them in the article we’re about to summarize. The article is titled “4 Immediate Ways to Help Hurricane Helene Victims in North Carolina.” Karissa    Yeah, that’s right. So whether you’re nearby or across the country, there’s a lot you can do. Arielle   Yeah, and even if fostering isn’t an option for you, because it is a huge responsibility, they can still use donations to cover the costs of food, transportation, and other essentials. Pets are often overlooked victims in natural disasters, but helping them out is a meaningful way to support the community. Karissa    Absolutely. Another way to directly help is by donating essential supplies. Right now, some of the most needed items are bottled water, diapers, new socks, toiletries, and underwear. Arielle   It’s really inspiring to see how local businesses are also stepping up. Wooden Robot Brewery, for example, has been helping collect these donations. They even posted a list on Instagram with drop-off locations, urging people to donate things like hydration packets and baby essentials. And yeah, like you just said, Karissa, all those important clean socks and underwear, and all the basics. Karissa    Yeah, totally. It’s one of the simplest yet most effective ways to help, and if you can drop off these kinds of items, you’ll be making such a difference for families who have lost so much already. Mold on the soil surface of your plant is one example of such an issue. The good news? Usually, there’s no need to worry! Mold on houseplant soil is a common problem, but with a few simple measures, you can remove it and keep it from coming again. Let’s look at ways to keep your plants healthy and your soil mold-free. What does mold on houseplant soil look like? Mold on houseplant soil often appears as little to big patches of fuzzy white stuff on the surface. You may also see it around your plant pot’s drainage holes. Although this may be unattractive, it does not necessarily indicate that your plant is in danger. However, if left unaddressed, mold can indicate underlying problems that could negatively impact your plant in the long run. Why does mold grow on houseplant soil? Even the healthiest houseplants can occasionally get moldy soil. Mold spores are omnipresent, and when the right conditions arise, they settle and thrive. The appearance of mold suggests that some environmental factors may need adjusting to effectively maintain your plant. Here are the most typical causes of moldy soil: Overwatering Overwatering is one of the most common causes of mold on houseplant soil. When the soil remains damp for an extended period, mold spores may flourish. This problem is most frequent during the cooler months when plants grow more slowly and the soil takes longer to dry out. Poor drainage If your plant’s pot does not have adequate drainage, water gathers in the soil, promoting mold growth. Mold thrives in environments with high moisture levels and low ventilation. Scrape off the mold If you find mold early, the simplest solution is to scrape off the top layer of infected soil. Allow the leftover soil to dry slightly before adding dry potting mix. Going forward, make sure you don’t overwater the plant. 2. Use natural fungicides For a natural solution, dust the soil’s surface with cinnamon, which has antifungal effects. Another approach is to combine baking soda and water and spray the soil with the solution. If natural remedies don’t work, you can buy a commercial fungicide at a garden center. 3. Repot the plant If the mold is extensive, it may be time to repot your plant. Remove the plant from its container, discard the moist, moldy soil, and replace it with new and well-drained potting mix. The Assam government hailed this momentous achievement on World Rhino Day (September 22nd), underscoring the state’s dedication to safeguarding its most emblematic animal. Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is still home to 80 percent of India’s rhino population.  “Rhinos are synonymous with the identity of Assam. They are our pride and the crown jewel of our biodiversity,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. His government prioritized rhino conservation, and the results speak for themselves. Conservation strategies and habitat expansion The increase of rhino habitats across Assam’s national parks has played a significant role in this population boom. The government has expanded Orang National Park to 200.7 square kilometers (77.5 square miles) and Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary to 195 square kilometers (75.3 square miles). In addition, 12.8 square kilometers (4.9 square miles) of rhino habitat in the Laokhowa-Burachapori complex have been restored and cleansed of encroachment. These efforts have paid off. The rhino population is not only growing but also spreading throughout Assam’s protected areas. The International Longshoremen’s Association announced Thursday that it would suspend a strike after reaching a deal with the United States Maritime Alliance. The union said its members would return to work immediately until Jan. 15 in order to give time for the leadership to negotiate a permanent deal. 'One expert estimated that the strike could cost as much as $3.7 billion per day.' A source told the New York Times that the union had been offered an increase of 62% in wages over the course of a contract lasting six years. The strike had begun on Tuesday morning and involved about 45,000 union members working ports on the East Coast as well as the Gulf Coast. The union was demanding concessions, including a large raise for dockworkers as well as a ban on automation at the ports. One expert estimated that the strike could cost as much as $3.7 billion per day. Also on Thursday, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he was ordering the National Guard to maintain order at ports and possibly "resume operations" so that disaster relief efforts were not affected by the strike. "It is unacceptable for the Biden-Harris administration to allow supply chain interruptions to hurt people who are reeling from a category 4 hurricane," DeSantis said. While President Joe Biden does the power to end a strike under the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, he has signaled that he would rather side with the union and allow the strike to continue. U.S. ports are far less efficient than those of other countries because of a lack of automation in order to protect union jobs and wages. Critics accuse the unions of using force to artificially keep wages high at the expense of trade efficiency. Some grocery store shelves were reportedly running out of toilet paper as a result of people panicking over the strike, though many noted that the supply of toilet paper should not be affected at all. A union whose members booed Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance in August refused to endorse the Harris campaign on Thursday. 'This decision, which we take very seriously, is the best way to preserve and strengthen our unity.' The International Association of Fire Fighters released a statement Thursday saying they would not endorse a presidential candidate despite being the first union in 2020 to eagerly endorse Joe Biden's campaign. "Over the past year, the IAFF took unprecedented steps to hear our members' views on the candidates and the policy issues that matter most to them," said union general president Edward Kelly. "This decision, which we take very seriously, is the best way to preserve and strengthen our unity." The announcement is seen as a monumental victory for the Republican Trump-Vance campaign, which has made a concerted effort to steal away support of unions from Democrats to the Republican column. Many on social media noted that the Harris campaign had mocked Vance for getting booed by some members of the IAFF union. A tweet in August with video of the incident garnered more than 2.5 million views. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters made a similar decision in September to refuse to endorse a presidential candidate after the union president spoke at the Republican National Convention. Democrats excoriated the union president, no doubt due to polling that showed union members were breaking for Trump away from Democrats.
