Daddy’s Head Trailer Gives Us a Child’s Grief in the Form of a Malevolent Monster

News Daddy’s Head Daddy’s Head Trailer Gives Us a Child’s Grief in the Form of a Malevolent Monster If a monster took the form of someone you’d lost, what would you do? By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on September 20, 2024 Credit: Shudder Comment 0 Share New Share Credit: Shudder Daddy’s Head, if the trailer is any indication, is a story about grief and faltering connection. Since it’s a horror movie, it conveys those themes via a supernatural entity that takes the twisted form of a dead boy’s father. The result looks like a solid entry in this genre, and one that might be worth adding to your schedule this spooky season. Here’s the movie’s official synopsis: In the wake of his father’s untimely death, a young boy is left in the eerie solitude of a sprawling country estate with his newly widowed stepmother. Struggling to navigate the overwhelming task of parenthood, his stepmother grows distant, leaving their fragile bond at risk of collapse. Amidst the growing tension, the boy begins to hear unsettling sounds echoing through the corridors, and is soon haunted by the presence of a grotesque creature bearing a disturbingly familiar resemblance to his late father. As the boy’s warnings are dismissed as the imagination of a grieving child, the sinister entity tightens its grip on their crumbling lives. The film is written and directed by Benjamin Barfoot and stars Julia Brown, Kaisa Hammarlund, and Charles Aitken. Daddy’s Head starts streaming on Shudder on October 11, 2024. It’s also screening at Fantastic Fest on September 22 and September 23, if you happen to be attending that. Check out the trailer below. Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Casts Miya Cech as Toph

News Avatar: The Last Airbender Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Casts Miya Cech as Toph A highly-anticipated casting choice has been made… By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on September 20, 2024 Photo: Dark Horse Comics Comment 0 Share New Share Photo: Dark Horse Comics The live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is now in production on its second season. And as part of Netflix’s Geeked Week, the streamer shared that they have cast the part of Toph, the young master earthbender who helps train Aang in the element with a humorously acerbic hand.   “We make a point of reviewing submissions separately and after countless tapes, we both had the same reaction… Miya is our Toph!” executive producers Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan told Tudum. “Miya is a brilliant performer who knows how to precisely balance the sarcastic sense of humor, stubbornness, and vulnerability that is Toph Beifong. Her physicality and emotional dexterity really put her in a class of one.”  Cech’s previous credits include Beef, Young Rock and The Santa Clauses. “I grew up watching the animated series. I’ve always been such a big fan and probably watched it ten times all the way through,” she told Tudum. “Toph was always my favorite character, so as soon as the casting notice came out, I begged my team to please get me an audition.” In the animated series, Toph is twelve years old and born blind. Netflix’s casting call for the role encouraged blind and low vision actors to audition, but with Cech’s casting, it appears that they’ve both aged up the character and cast someone sighted to portray the part. No news yet on when the second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender will premiere on Netflix. Season One is currently available there for your viewing pleasure. How King Henry II’s Last Joust Accidentally Shaped France’s Future

While it's hardly a surprise to modern understandings that ramming someone with a large replica of a spear on horseback may not be the safest activity, people in centuries past learned jousting was a questionable sport the hard way. In fact, one joust changed the shape of an entire country's future. Because when King Henry II suffered a terrible accident, the consequences extended far beyond the... Source

Voters Don’t Want Harris’ or Trump’s Campaign Policies

Neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former President Donald Trump, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday’s front page, has any proposals to cut the rapidly increasing national debt. Instead, both are proposing to hand out goodies to strategically positioned voters. Harris, with an eye on polls showing young voters not as pro-Democratic as in the past, has been talking about providing $25,000 for down payments to first-time homebuyers. With an eye on young families and single parents, she has also called for restoring part of the refundable child tax credit that was part of what President Joe Biden has now conceded was the misnamed 2021 Inflation Reduction Act. Trump, hoping to win the electoral votes of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, as he did in 2016 and did not in 2020, has called for cutting taxes on domestic manufacturing firms and reducing taxes on overtime pay. Nevada, 70% of whose voters live in Clark County, with its hordes of gambling and hospitality workers in Las Vegas, has come in for attention as well. Trump was the first to propose eliminating income tax on tips. Harris, hoping to carry the state as Biden did, endorsed the same policy. You will search long and hard for statements from major economists and policy experts associated with either party for serious arguments supporting these policies, just as you can find few serious advocates of Trump’s proposed 10% tariff on imports from all foreign countries or from Harris’ hints that she’d institute something such as national rent control. On the contrary, serious analysts will point to likely unintended consequences—home sellers will just increase their asking prices by $25,000—and, of course, to burgeoning federal budget deficits and increasing national debt. They are proposals of undisciplined candidates with little interest in serious public policy arguments who are locked in a close race for president. There’s an obvious note of political desperation here but also, I think, a less obvious reliance on outdated political theory. That theory is that large masses of voters are in serious need of additional cash, whether from tax cuts for Nevada casino employees and waitresses, or factory workers on overtime shifts. Yes, almost everyone would like a few extra bucks on their credit or debit cards. But just as the United States already has the most progressive redistributionist federal tax system of advanced countries, over the years it has incrementally built generous income supplements for those with the lowest 60% of incomes. That conclusion finds solid support in “The Myth of American Inequality,” by former Texas Sen. Phil Gramm and two nonpartisan co-authors. Their conclusion, as I reported in a 2023 Washington Examiner column, is that “government takes and redistributes enough resources to elevate the average bottom-quintile household,” the lowest 20% of earners, “into the American middle class.” Democrats imagine that advancing redistributionist policies will win them votes of whites without college degrees, and Hispanics who have been trending Republican on cultural issues. But American policy has long since moved past the New Deal and European welfare states. Democrats, and Trump in imitation, are supplying policies for which there is little demand in the political marketplace. The proof comes in the dog that didn’t bark. The Biden-Harris 2021 legislation expanded the child tax credit from $2,000 to as much as $3,600 and made it refundable, which means that low-income earners who don’t pay federal income taxes got $15 billion in monthly checks from the government. The argument for refundability is that it helps those with the lowest incomes. The argument against it is that, in discouraging work, it threatens to reverse the 1996 bipartisan welfare reform that resulted in higher work participation, lower teenage birthrates, and better conditions for children. That expansion of the child tax credit expired in Dec. 2021. Do you remember the mass demonstrations by modest-income parents angry when the checks stopped coming in? You don’t? Neither do I. We’ve had mass movements to defund police, to reinstate Roe v. Wade, to stop Israel from defending itself from Hamas terrorists. But not much more than a peep to restore the 2021 child tax credit. Voters are hugely miffed about the inflation they believe was triggered by the 2021 legislation. But the folks who were receiving those refundable tax credit checks seem to have been able to cope without them. Which leads me to a broader but tentative conclusion that voters, for all their vocal discontent with parties and politicians, actually are not demanding major changes in economic policy. In six of the last eight presidential elections, from 1992 to 2020, both political parties have won trifectas, control of the White House and both houses of Congress—Democrats in 1992, 2008, and 2020, Republicans in 2000, 2004, and 2016. Both parties have seized these opportunities to make serious economic policy changes, with some success. But none of those trifectas lasted more than two years, and the Democratic presidents who were reelected in 1996 and 2012 faced Republican majorities. So what we have now is Harris and Trump advancing crass campaign promises that lack the seriousness of the policies of former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Maybe that’s what voters want—for now. COPYRIGHT 2024 CREATORS.COM We publish a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of The Daily Signal. Why Are the Nutjobs Trying to Kill Political Opponents All Left-Wingers?

In Aug. 2012, a left-wing MSNBC afficionado named Floyd Lee Corkins armed himself with a handgun and extra magazines. He drove to the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the socially conservative Family Research Council, planning to shoot it up. Corkins, who later cited the Southern Poverty Law Center for the proposition that the FRC is an “anti-gay” organization, was also carrying 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches, which he hoped to stuff in his dead victims’ mouths. Corkins, who served as a volunteer at a local LGBT community center, was stopped by an unarmed security guard. In June 2017, a left-wing MSNBC afficionado named James Hodgkinson armed himself with a rifle and handgun. He drove to Alexandria, Virginia, in hopes of assassinating the Republican team practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game. He severely wounded then-House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who thankfully survived after receiving multiple blood transfusions and surgeries. Five others were also injured. Hodgkinson was a 2016 Bernie Sanders presidential campaign volunteer who, in a Facebook post three weeks before the shooting, wrote: “Trump is a Traitor. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It’s Time to Destroy Trump & Co.” In June 2022, a young Californian named Nicholas Roske flew to the nation’s capital. Roske attained a handgun, zip ties, a tactical knife, a hammer, a screwdriver, a crowbar, duct tape and other burglary tools. At 1:38 a.m. local time, about a half hour after a taxi dropped him off in front of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s Chevy Chase, Maryland, home, Roske had second thoughts and called 911. After his arrest, Roske told police he was angered by the leaked draft opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization abortion case. Roske had written in a private chat: “Im gonna stop roe v wade from being overturned.” In March 2023, Audrey “Aiden” Hale, a transgender individual, slaughtered three children and three adults at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee. A former pupil at the Christian school, Hale took precious time during the rampage to divert and unload seven rounds into a stained-glass depiction of the biblical character Adam in a church next door. As this column asked last year: Why, exactly, would a transgender former student of a Christian school return to that school to murder innocent Christian children and shoot up a stained-glass representation of no less symbolic a biblical figure than Adam? We don’t necessarily need Sherlock Holmes to figure this one out. Leaked excerpts of the murderer’s manifesto corroborate Hale’s sinister, anti-Christian motive. This Sunday, former President Donald Trump survived an attempted assassination for the second time in a span of roughly two months. The first would-be assassin, the mysterious Thomas Crooks, donated $15 to ActBlue, the well-known Democratic fundraising platform. The second would-be assassin, the considerably less mysterious Ryan Routh, has a prolific public record. Routh, a convicted felon and supporter of Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, had an over-the-top, creepy obsession with Ukraine — one of the defining causes of the contemporary Left. Routh’s social media accounts were rife with de rigueur left-wing platitudes about the alleged unprecedented threat posed by Trump to America’s democracy and constitutional order. Murderous political violence in the United States today is not an all-of-the-above phenomenon. Yes, such violence must be condemned by all responsible political and civic actors, as we inch ever closer to an irrecoverable national abyss. But MSNBC’s daily on-air histrionics to the contrary notwithstanding, all sides are not equally culpable for the terrible situation America finds itself in today. Trump may not always be the most circumspect rhetorician, but he has never actively called for his supporters to physically assault their political opponents — including on Jan. 6, when he called for his throng of supporters gathered at the Ellipse to “peacefully and patriotically” demonstrate at the Capitol. The same cannot be said for Trump’s opposition, such as when Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) said earlier this year on MSNBC that Trump is “unfit,” “destructive to our democracy,” and “has to be eliminated.” According to a poll released on Wednesday, a whopping 28% of Democrats said America would be better off if Trump were assassinated — and another 24% of Democrats confessed uncertainty. This is unconscionable. The Left has had a violent streak going back at least as far as Karl Marx’s calls for a global revolution of the proletariat — and the French Revolution even before that. And in today’s post-truth world, an expedient narrative often trumps cold facts. But Trump is not a “fascist” or “dictator.” On the contrary, Trump’s first term was, if anything, marred by excessive deference and an unwillingness to fire insubordinate bureaucrats. If MSNBC talking heads and their left-wing confreres fail to tone down the rhetoric, reasonable observers will conclude they agree with the 28% of Democrats who want Trump dead. Nets AROUSED by ‘Queen’ Oprah, ‘Star-Studded’ Hollywood Helping Kamala to Victory

On Friday morning, the “Big Three” networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC were almost in state of euphoria over Oprah Winfrey’s Thursday night “star-studded get-out-the-vote effort for” Vice President Kamala Harris that was “classic” work from “the queen of talk”, including “deeply personal and emotional stories” (and utter falsehoods). ABC did its part on Good Morning America by playing the most unbashed tools in the shed. Co-host Michael Strahan had an interview with Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff to hawk, but he first had to promote Harris and Oprah. “Vice President Harris was in Michigan with Oprah, fielding questions from voters while former President Trump spoke at an anti-Semitism event in Washington, D.C.,” Strahan beamed in tossing to chief tool Mary Bruce. The unabashedly partisan Bruce was ebullient: Well, this event here overnight in Michigan was signature Oprah Winfrey from the celebrity appearances to deeply personal and emotional stories of voters. Harris and Oprah well aware the race is extremely close and trying to reach out to key voters that will make all the difference. Gushing that “the queen of talk len[t] her star power to boost Kamala Harris and get out the vote,” Bruce fawned over the astro-turfed event as “a highly produced virtual rally” with “Oprah trying to harness enthusiasm for Harris and keep her momentum going, urging Americans to vote their values.”     Bruce saw no issue with Harris’s penchant for hiding from the American people and instead praised her for “fielding questions directly from voters” (which were undoubtedly screened and scripted in advance), which has been “something she rarely does.” Instead of hawking the economy, Bruce focused on abortion and guns with the latter including a lie Bruce purposefully peddled from far-left, dark-money-backed ProPublica the story of Amber Thurman, a “28-year-old mother who was reportedly the first publicly known to lose her life as a result of Georgia’s abortion ban.” Bruce briefly pivoted to Trump, kicking dirt in his face by going to an lie-filled excerpt of Emhoff and Strahan after saying he claimed “Harris ‘doesn’t like Jewish people’ and attacked Jews that support Democrats and Harris.” CBS Mornings curiously had co-host, Kamala Harris donor, and Winfrey’s best friend Gayle King off on Friday. Instead, fill-in co-host Kristine Johnson promoted Harris in the Eye Opener as “hit[ting] the trail with a star-studded event in Michigan, hosted by Oprah Winfrey.”     “Now let’s look at the Democratic side. Vice President Kamala Harris had some major star power at her latest campaign event, a livestream from Michigan with Oprah Winfrey. It is a key battleground state, and the event was the start of a new push to win over those undecided voters,” she later proclaimed. Senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang celebrated the night as “classic Oprah” on display “interview[ing] Vice President Harris with a live audience and thousands of virtual guests...including several celebrities” whom “[t]he campaign hopes...will propel Harris’s message on everything from January 6th to gun control.” With CBS having spent two segments burying Republicans as losers across the country thanks to North Carolina GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, Jiang saw no need to spend more than a sentence on what Trump was up to: “Last night in Washington, DC, Trump focused on Jewish Americans at two events to combat antisemitism.” Over on NBC’s Today, chief White House correspondent Peter Alexander trumpeted about “Harris...hoping to parlay the star power of one of her most famous surrogates to amplify her pitch to voters.” Speaking of Winfrey, he swooned that “[t]he queen of daytime hosting the Vice President in prime time, part of a star-studded get-out-the-vote effort for the Democratic nominee” with “[t]he Harris campaign hoping to use Oprah’s popularity to court undecided voters.”     Alexander also peddled the Georgia lie: Ahead of Harris’s visit to Georgia today, where she’ll emphasize reproductive rights, a powerful message from a 28-year-old pregnant woman, who blames her death two years ago on delays in her care because of Georgia’s restrictive abortion laws. Like the others, he also hailed Harris’s remark about gun ownership on how she’d shoot any intruders....which wouldn’t happen since she might have Secret Service for the rest of her life. The Saturday Today co-host poo-pooed Trump ahead of a segment on Robinson from Laura Jarrett, daughter of far-left activist and Obama family confidante Valerie Jarrett (click “expand”): ALEXANDER: Her Republican rival in Washington at events focused on fighting anti-Semitism. Trump complaining that the majority of Jewish Americans support Harris and even appearing to blame the Jewish community if he’s defeated this fall. TRUMP: If I don’t win this election and the Jewish people would really have a lot to do with that if that happens because, at 40 percent, that means 60 percent of the people are voting for the enemy. ALEXANDER: And repeating this dire prediction. TRUMP: Israel will not exist within two years if she becomes president. And what a difference a president makes — big difference. ALEXANDER: At the same event last night, former President Trump also said that he would reinstitute a travel ban if he returns to the White House to prevent migrants from, “infested countries” from entering the United States. The View’s GOPer Calls Cast Out as Hypocrites for Attacking Melania

After teaming up with 2016 election denier and two-time failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton the previous day to push Vice President Kamala Harris for president, one of The View’s questionable Republicans confronted the rest of the ABC co-hosts on Friday for “slut shamming” former First Lady Melania Trump. The Cackling Coven tried to suggest the unelected former model, who didn’t seem to enjoy politics at all, was somehow now representative of the entire Republican Party, after racy photos of Trump resurfaced. “You got to love the little birther. You know what I’m saying? We all appreciate the female body, Melania. Listen, your husband appreciated Stormy Daniels' body plenty, right?” Joy Behar (81) sniped at Trump. Without an explanation, fake moderate Sara Haines declared that the photos – taken decades ago, long before she married former President Trump – were somehow smoking-gun evidence of Republican hypocrisy: But it's more the hypocrisy of it and what bothers me about it is the Republican Party has long kind of ridden the family values, the purist people, the judgment on everyone else's lives; from banning books to shutting down drag performances. So, to then all of a sudden flip the script and say ‘now we appreciate this thing,’ it just -- it felt like it was -- it doesn't track. Surprisingly, Alyssa Farah Griffin defended Trump. “I think in art, photography, picture, portraits, if you want to pose nude or want to express that, that's a perfectly fine thing. What I was surprised by is, I don't know any serious person who’s been criticized her for this in a decade since she first ran for office,” she said, although she had never “ran for office.”     First ladies don’t “run” for that position because it’s not an elected position inside the U.S. government. She further called out the left by declaring: “If they are on the left, I don't think you defeat misogyny, sexism, slut shaming by engaging in it. I think that you should – if that's what you stand for, you shouldn’t do it to Melania Trump anymore you should someone else.” That triggered staunchly racist and anti-Semitic co-host Sunny Hostin (the descendant of slave owners): One of the problems with this whole thing is that when she was the first lady you could only refer to her as a former model! You could not mention the photos! If you mentioned the photos, you were canceled! And, by the way, these aren't photos. These are erotic nude photos! This is the same thing that took down Vanessa Williams! Okay? And that is not acceptable! “I agree on the hypocrisy but do you defeat ills in society by engaging in the same ills?” Farah Griffin pushed back. Farah Griffin really got into it with fake Republican Ana Navarro as the former called out the latter’s hypocrisy on the issue (Click “expand”): FARAH GRIFFIN: But that confronts the hypocrisy, not the act you’re trying to change: misogyny, sexism. NAVARRO: I’m one who’s going to call it out every single time I see it. When I see somebody that calls themselves the party of God and the party of religiousness, supporting Donald Trump, I'm going to call out the hypocrisy. FARAH GRIFFIN: Do you have a problem with slut shaming, though? NAVARRO: Do I have a spec – Do I have a problem when – Republicans do it plenty. Right? They tried to do it with Kamala Harris. FARAH GRIFFIN: Yeah, but I’m asking if you have a problem with it. NAVARRO: What? Of slut shaming? Not a bit! I have a problem with hypocrisy! I have a problem with liars! FARAH GRIFFIN: See, I have a problem with both is I think what I would say. Seemingly aware that she was boxed into a corner, Navarro pivoted to mocking Trump’s new book. “You know what I also think is funny? Like she's got this book, right? Which is her memoir. She says she's telling her side of the story. It's like a coffee table book,” she chided. “Yeah, so what?” Behar quipped back. Looking to Farah Griffin, Behar said she agreed and made a self-deprecating joke: “I'm making an announcement. I'm doing some porn for the blind.” The transcript is below. Click "expand" to read: ABC’s The View September 20, 2024 11:24:46 a.m. Eastern (…) MELANIA TRUMP: We should honor our bodies and embrace the timeless tradition of using art as a powerful means of self-expression. [Cuts back to live] JOY BEHAR: You got to love the little birther. You know what I’m saying? We all appreciate the female body, Melania. Listen, your husband appreciated Stormy Daniels' body plenty, right? [Applause] ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: Oh, my lord. Ouch. SARA HAINES: I think she also compared herself – or some reference to The David which is by Michelangelo. Like, I think that might be maybe a step too far. But I love the female body, all of the things. It's what Ana was addressing in the first segment. BEHAR: It's more like an inch too far. If you’ve seen the statue. HAINES: I've seen the David! I had to get close! Sorry. [Laughter] But it's more the hypocrisy of it and what bothers me about it is the Republican Party has long kind of ridden the family values, the purist people, the judgment on everyone else's lives; from banning books to shutting down drag performances. So, to then all of a sudden flip the script and say ‘now we appreciate this thing,’ it just -- it felt like it was -- it doesn't track. FARAH GRIFFIN: So, I saw it drop and I was just like, “finally a Trump is on message! This is what the people are talking about!” Not at all. I actually agreed with everything she said. I think in art, photography, picture, portraits, if you want to pose nude or want to express that, that's a perfectly fine thing. What I was surprised by is, I don't know any serious person who’s been criticized her for this in a decade - SUNNY HOSTIN: Well, you know why? FARAH GRIFFIN: - since she first ran for office. I think that you should – if that's what you stand for, you shouldn’t do it to Melania Trump anymore you should someone else. BEHAR: It’s the hypocrisy! Didn't they go after Michelle Obama's arms? I mean, come on! HOSTIN: Yes! I was going to say that. One of the problems with this whole thing is that when she was the first lady you could only refer to her as a former model! You could not mention the photos! If you mentioned the photos, you were canceled! And, by the way, these aren't photos. These are erotic nude photos! This is the same thing that took down Vanessa Williams! Okay? And that is not acceptable! FARAH GRIFFIN: I agree on the hypocrisy but do you defeat ills in society by engaging in the same ills? ANA NAVARRO: I’m willing to confront them with hypocrisy, man. I think that – FARAH GRIFFIN: So, you defeat hypocrisy with more hypocrisy? NAVARRO: No, I think you confront hypocrisy and you call it out when you see it. I also think, that to me it was funny. FARAH GRIFFIN: But that confronts the hypocrisy, not the act you’re trying to change: misogyny, sexism. NAVARRO: I’m one who’s going to call it out every single time I see it. When I see somebody that calls themselves the party of God and the party of religiousness, supporting Donald Trump, I'm going to call out the hypocrisy. DeSantis: Feds are not cooperating with Florida's investigation into assassination attempt

Governor Ron DeSantis revealed on Thursday that the state's investigation into the second assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump in West Palm Beach is running into roadblocks from the federal government. While the FBI is leading the investigation into Sunday's attempted shooting of Trump while he was playing on his golf course, DeSantis announced earlier this week a joint task force between the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will also be looking into the state laws suspect Ryan Routh has been accused of violating."No, they are not being cooperative; yes, I am concerned. For example ... our investigators were rebuffed just going to the fence line outside of Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. I think they've taken the position they don't want the state of Florida to be involved in this. But here's the thing, there were multiple violations of Florida law," DeSantis told Fox News host Laura Ingraham.'We need to know, how did he end up in Florida to begin with?'DeSantis said his investigators believe Routh violated the law in three of Florida's judicial circuits. The most serious crime Routh could be charged with, attempted murder, falls under the state of Florida since Trump is not a federal official at the moment. Routh has so far been federally charged with gun-related crimes."We have a duty to investigate this. We have a duty to bring the appropriate charges. We also have a duty to inform the public about how this happened," DeSantis continued. "So I don't anticipate their being cooperative."As to the questions about who exactly Routh is, DeSantis said he instructed law enforcement to save all of his social media posts before companies take down his profiles, which ended up happening on X and Facebook."We need to know, how did he end up in Florida to begin with? What is this pathway this guy has taken to end up in those bushes? ... We have not gotten answers about Butler. We haven't gotten answers about things like the Las Vegas shooting," DeSantis added.Another big question that has yet to be answered is why the spot along the club's fence line, where Routh was for hours, was not checked to make sure someone was not burrowed there because that area has been known to be a security concern for many years.Like Blaze News? September is Veteran Suicide Prevention Month, but it's not something most people think about during this time of year. For many Americans, September signals new beginnings. Parents are busy settling their kids into a back-to-school routine, college is starting up again, and suicide prevention and awareness aren't top priorities for most. However, several members of the Pipe Hitter Foundation board and I have recently lost someone close to us to suicide. While government programs and policies matter, real change happens when we shift our culture. The Pipe Hitter Foundation sees this month as an opportunity to bring attention to an issue that has deeply affected us and to make our case to the public about what can be done to combat this tragic epidemic. A wide range of proposed solutions exists, many of which deserve public consideration. At the same time, the public debate often leaves many veterans, spouses, and patriotic Americans wondering what they can do in their own lives to help. The simple answer lies in a principle they taught us all as recruits: Ensure no one stands alone. One of the first things I learned in the Navy is that a lone sailor is a vulnerable sailor. The second lesson is learning to work together with the people around you. Sailors, soldiers, Marines, and airmen are stronger as a team. Being part of a team means having each other’s backs. If we don’t work together, things won’t end well for us. Later, I realized those lessons were taught for a reason. If you can’t function as a team on deployment, the consequences can be severe. It’s that simple. In my experience, after working with veterans for decades since leaving the military, the same principle still applies — for much the same reason. Many of our brothers and sisters in arms carry invisible wounds, and many will struggle with those wounds for the rest of their lives. When the battle follows you home, it can become a matter of life and death. But just like on deployment, none of us can face it alone, nor should anyone have to. One simple thing everyone can do is reach out and check in with the veterans in their lives. Talk to your friends and listen to them. Even sending a simple text message with helpful resources to fellow vets is a great way to break the ice. No matter our views on politics, when we served, how long we served, or how much time we need to volunteer, we can all pick up the phone and be the friend someone needs when he's struggling. You might never even know you made a difference. Sadly, almost every veteran has been affected personally by the shock waves of the suicide epidemic. In just the past month, I have lost two friends to suicide. Every veteran I know has a connection or story about how they’ve been impacted by the news that someone they knew, served with, or loved has taken his own life, leaving the rest of us behind to pick up the pieces and try to move forward as best we can. Access to more Veterans Affairs mental health programs and improved government policies could help. Yes, we should embrace research, advocate better policies, and ensure that programs for veterans are as efficient and accessible as possible. It’s also important to understand that no single government program or policy will ever reach every corner of the human mind, especially on a problem as large and complex as this epidemic. What we know for certain is that countless studies highlight the importance of human connection in dealing with problems like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. We also know that, in today’s world, we are more isolated than ever before and are starving for community and connection. We can do so much more if we start working together, because we are stronger together. The biggest impact we can make in addressing the suicide crisis will come from a combination of good policy and the simplest action: checking on each other. While government programs and policies matter, real change happens when we shift our culture. After years of working in and around government, I’ve learned that the smallest actions often make the greatest difference. Just picking up the phone to check on someone could be the one thing that saves a life. Let’s make that difference today.
