They include the new entry-level AirPods 4 for $129, a higher-end AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation (ANC) that costs $179, and a revised AirPods Max priced at $549. All three will be available on September 20th and can be preordered today. According to Apple, the two new AirPods 4 models offer significantly improved sound over the third generation. Apple just unveiled four new iPhone 16 models, confirming most of the iPhone rumors that have been floating around over the past few months. All the new iPhones feature a new button, which was regularly referred to as the Capture button in leaks. Its real name is Camera Control, as that's what the button will be used for. Camera Control instantly opens up the camera to either take photos or enable an exclusive iPhone 16 Visual Intelligence feature, which is part of Apple Intelligence. The capacitive button detects touch presses, letting you select camera controls in the Camera app and zoom in and out. The Camera Control button also works with Apple's new custom cases for the iPhone 16, which don't have cutouts. While I'm a big fan of the Camera Control button and plan to use it often, watching Apple's presentation on Monday made me realize something: Apple could have added Touch ID back to the iPhone anytime it wanted to do it, even if that meant placing it on the side rather than under the display.  Continue reading... A strip of wood unearthed during 2001 excavations at the site of the ancient Japanese capital city of Fujiwara-kyo is a far more sophisticated artifact than it appears at first glance. After more than two decades of careful analysis, experts from Japan’s Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties have proven that this object is approximately 1,300 years old, and that it contains figures that reveal it to have been part of a larger tablet inscribed with a detailed multiplication table. Oldest Multiplication Table in Japan As of now, this inscribed piece of wood is the oldest remnant from a multiplication table ever recovered on Japanese soil. Having been found in the ruins of the ancient Fujiwara Palace, a structure built by the rulers of Fujiwara-kyo, it is believed the multiplication tablet would have had some type of official use. The Nara Institute researchers think it belonged to an administrative entity known as the Emon-fu guard, a bureau responsible for managing the day-to-day affairs of the capital city’s government. This identification actually narrows the manufacture and use of the inscribed wooden artifact to a specific point in time. The capital city of Fujiwara-kyo, which was modeled after the great cities of China, was established in 694 and remained the political and administrative hub of Japanese life only until the year 710. The assumption is that the multiplication tablet would have been used by Emon-fu personnel during this period of time, for duties such as calculating taxes or organizing the work schedules of government employees. There’s a new form of bigotry taking root in this country—one that’s just as insidious as anything we’ve seen before. It’s subtle, it’s hidden in plain sight, and it’s hiding behind the most innocuous of suburban concerns: the safety of your pets. Yes, you heard me right. If you’re even remotely worried that your beloved dog Fluffy or your precious cat Mr. Whiskers might be stolen and eaten by crazed, undocumented immigrants, you might be—a racist homophobe bigot. Now, before you clutch your pearls and start protesting about your “right to protect your pets,” let’s get one thing clear: concern about pet theft is a thinly veiled form of xenophobia. Who, exactly, are you afraid of stealing and eating your pets? Let me guess—immigrants? Crazed immigrants, no less! You might as well go ahead and call yourself a card-carrying member of the “I miss Jim Crow” club. You see, in 2024, we must accept that our pets belong to a global community. These so-called “crazed immigrants” aren’t stealing your pets—they’re reclaiming what was once theirs in the cosmic order of things. That fluffy Bichon Frisé you’re clinging to? It’s practically a delicacy in some parts of the world! How dare you impose your cultural values of “ownership” and “not eating pets” on others? And let’s not forget about the intersectionality at play here. These immigrants, many of whom are fleeing persecution and poverty, have been forced to cross borders. If they’re hungry enough to chow down on your Labradoodle, it’s not their fault—it’s the fault of systemic inequality, global warming, and Donald Trump (obviously). Instead of vilifying them, you should thank them for showing you how to embrace your privilege. Eating your pet is practically an act of resistance. But the bigotry doesn’t stop there. By assuming that you should be the one to keep your pets safe from immigrant “threats,” you’re also reinforcing the white heteronormative patriarchy. Who gave you the right to decide what counts as a “threat”? Do you think your fear somehow trumps (oops, sorry, I said the T-word) the lived experiences of marginalized communities? You’re probably the kind of person who uses pronouns only for humans and refuses to let your pets choose their own gender. So here’s a simple solution to rid yourself of this latent racism and bigotry: the next time an immigrant looks at your pet like it’s their next meal, smile and let it go. Better yet, offer a side of kale salad and a glass of kombucha to show how inclusive you are. Because if you don’t, you might just be a racist, homophobe, bigot who hates the planet. And remember: if you don’t want your pets stolen and eaten by immigrants, the problem isn’t the immigrant—it’s you.
