Conservative activist Robby Starbuck announced on Monday that retail giant Walmart was the next major business to abandon woke policies and practices under pressure and the threat of wider public exposure. Starbuck, who has been systematically exposing major businesses that have implemented such practices, took to X and shared a video and a series of points he said he’d discussed with Walmart executives. Instead we had productive conversations to find solutions.” “I have to give their executives major credit because this will send shockwaves throughout corporate America,” Starbuck continued, adding, “This is the biggest win yet for our movement to end wokeness in corporate America.” He went on to say that the massive retailer had actually committed to implementing a number of changes that would root out wokeness that had permeated the company culture. Among the changes he said Walmart had committed to were: Surveys: Walmart will no longer participate in the HRC’s woke Corporate Equality Index. Products: Monitor the Walmart marketplace to identify and remove inappropriate sexual and / or transgender products marketed to children. Funding of Grants: Review all funding of Pride, and other events, to avoid funding inappropriate sexualized content targeting kids. Equity: We will not extend the Racial Equity Center which was established in 2020 as a special five-year initiative. Supplier Diversity: We will evaluate supplier diversity programs and ensure they do not provide preferential treatment and benefits to suppliers based on diversity. We don’t have quotas and won’t going forward. Financing eligibility will no longer be predicated on providing certain demographic data. LatinX: Walmart will no longer use the term in official communications. Trainings: Walmart will discontinue racial equity training through the Racial Equity Institute. DEI: Walmart will discontinue the use of DEI as a term while ensuring a respectful and supportive environment. Our focus is on Belonging for ALL associates and customers. “Remember, Walmart is the #1 employer in America with over 1.6 Million employees and they have a market cap of nearly $800B,” Starbuck concluded. “This won’t just have a massive effect for their employees who will have a neutral workplace without feeling that divisive issues are being injected but it will also extend to their many suppliers.” Starbuck noted that the effort to excise woke policies and practices had impacted companies worth more than $2 Trillion in total — and that having done so before Christmas opened the door for Americans to shop for the holidays without worrying about their money funding more woke policies. “Companies like Amazon and Target should be very nervous that their top competitor dropped woke policies first,” he said. “I think Target specifically will suffer serious sales problems as a result and Walmart will benefit.”

In addition to co-anchoring Univision’s evening newscast, Jorge Ramos also hosts the network’s Sunday political affairs show Al Punto. But as Ramos winds down his tenure at the network, he may have confirmed the fate of his show- which was rumored to fall to the cost-cutting axe. As has already been reported, Ramos is on his way out at Univision. As we noted at the time: Per sources with knowledge of the situation, Ramos was offered a contract extension in exchange for significantly reduced compensation (from a figure reportedly somewhere between Muir and Holt money), and a significantly reduced role wherein he would no longer be the face of the news division. Being forced off the anchor desk and relegated to a weekly role was apparently a step too far for Ramos.  Credit where it is due: Ramos addressed his non-renewal directly, without trying to make up a story about going into podcasting. But it turns out that his departure was the first domino at Univision, which is rumored to undergo massive cuts. Per Media Moves: Over the past two weeks, rumors circulated about impending cuts and program cancellations. Staffers say they were told to expect “massive layoffs” across the board. A source described the tension and anxiety in the newsroom, noting that employees feel “absolute terror” due to the uncertainty created by waiting to find out who will lose their jobs and who will remain with the company. Meanwhile, some employees who have spent decades with the organization are rushing to polish their résumés. Sources tell Media Moves that cuts originally scheduled for this week have now been postponed until the first week of December. Among the strongest rumors is the potential cancellation of the weekly news magazine “Aquí y Ahora,” which has been on the air since 2000, and Sunday public affairs program “Al Punto,”  hosted by anchor Jorge Ramos since its inception in 2007. Ramos is leaving Univision at the end of the year. This in addition to negotiated departures of certain talents, such as correspondents Luis Megid and Blanca Rosa Vilchez) and the shutdown of the network’s San Francisco bureau. The cancellation of Al Punto has so far been rumored, but Ramos telling his guest that he’s his last interview, with a month left in the year, does not bode well for the program or, more importantly, for its crew.  Other cuts are coming to Univision, both in content and in personnel. We remain hopeful that these cuts are ultimately performed in service of genuine much-needed reform at Univision.

A rare decorated parcel-gilt silver earscoop from the Middle Ages was discovered by a metal detectorist in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, in July. The whole piece is just 1.7 inches long and is composed of a shaft that is square in cross-section with a widened, flattened end hollowed out to form a scoop on one side and a flattened square end on the other. The square end bears some resemblance to a modern cuticle pusher, but if it had a usage in the Middle Ages, it was more likely to have been used to clean under fingernails. The shank is z-twisted (turned clockwise) and partially gilded. It was decorated with punchmarks using a sharp tool inserted at an angle that left a triangular divot and a small blob of silver at the base of the triangle. Unlike Roman earscoops, this one has no perforation to suspend it, so despite its small size it was carried rather than worn. County finds liaison officer Helen Geake said scoops were “really, really hard to date”, but a line of dots punched along its “barley twist” handle suggested to her it is later medieval rather than from the earlier Roman period in Britain. Just 20 silver ear scoops have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities website since it was created more than 25 years ago, making it a rare find, she added. “For comparison with other medieval silver items, there are 1,200 brooches, 1,200 finger rings and 29 pins on the database,” Dr Geake said. Several of its features are unusual compared to the other medieval earscoops recorded in the PAS database. Most of the others have a tapered point on the opposite end of the scoop, believed to have been used as a toothpick, as gross as that is. The flat square on the other end of this scoop has not been seen before. The partial gilding is extremely rare. The z-twist is also unusual; most of the other recorded earscoops have an s-twist (turned counter-clockwise). Any decoration at all along the twisted shank is so rare there’s only one other recorded example, and it has engraved lines, not punchmarks. The fact that the few medieval earscoops that have been found are primarily made of silver attests to their being the province of the wealthy. (Silver and gold were even more rare before the colonization of the Americas spurred a new influx of precious metals to Europe in the 16th century.) Most people probably didn’t use earscoops at all, rather than making them from inexpensive materials. Because it is made of a precious metal and is more than 300 years old, the earscoop qualifies as Treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act. Its official status will be adjudicated by a coroner’s court, after which a local museum will be given the opportunity to acquire it for an amount determined by a valuation committee. The Norwich Castle Museum is hoping to secure it for its collection.
