Willie Nelson’s Christmas Classic “Pretty Paper” Was Inspired By A Mystery Man In Fort Worth Selling Wrapping Paper In The ’60s

An all-time classic. By and large, most Christmas music these days is pretty commercial, and honestly, forgettable. But over the years, legends like Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson have put out some absolutely beautiful, and timeless, holiday originals. And one of the best is Willie Nelson's "Pretty Paper," which he wrote in 1963, and was first made famous by Roy Orbison when it peaked at #15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Willie later recorded his own version of the song in 1964 and again in 1979 for his own Christmas album. In the lyrics, Willie references a man selling “pretty paper, pretty ribbons” alone on the sidewalk, and as it turns out, there actually was a disabled street vendor Willie knew from his time as a radio DJ in Fort Worth who did just that. Though he regrets never stopping to actually talk to the man whom he would walk by every single day on his way to work, the image of seeing him on the sidewalk always stuck out to Willie long after he moved from Texas to Nashville to pursue a career in country music. The Local Paper Identifies The Mystery Man He specifically remembered the man announcing, “Pretty paper! Pretty paper!”, to get the attention of people walking by, which is where the instantly recognizable title and lyrics came from. For many years, the man's identity was a mystery, but in 2004, Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnists were finally able to identify the man who inspired such an iconic song. They had put the word out to their readers to see if anyone had any information regarding the man or might've recognized him, as a lot of them had shopped at Leonard’s Department Store over the years and remembered seeing him there. None of them knew his name, but quite a few people reported that he traveled from Santo, in Palo Pinto County, to downtown Fort Worth to sell his goods. As it turns out, a man named Bob Neely, a nearby rancher from Santo, called one day when he found out they were inquiring about his neighbor, Frankie Brierton. Bob says you could always hear him crawling up and down Houston or Throckmorton streets on all fours. Eventually, the paper got in contact with Frankie’s daughter, Lillian Compte, who lived in Conroe. She had no idea the song was about her dad, or that anyone would be asking about him, seeing as he had passed away in 1973: “It’s a pretty song. I just never thought of it being about my father. He sold pencils. He crawled around on his hands and knees. But we never did without.” Frankie had suffered from a spinal disorder as a child, and learned to crawl when his spine was weakened as a result. He would travel to Fort Worth, Dallas, and Houston to sell his goods at the State Fair of Texas and the Stock Show in Fort Worth. Eventually, the landlords in downtown Fort Worth wanted to ban street vendors and missionaries in front of stores. Charlie Ringler, a former store manager at Leonard’s, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the Leonard family allowed all of them to stay as long as they were actually selling something: “Some people wanted them moved out, but we never moved them. We couldn’t turn them away. As long as they were selling pencils or something, that was fine.” As it turns out, on a rare, snowy Christmas Eve in the Stockyards, the red headed stranger was doing some last minute Christmas shopping and decided that he was going to buy wrapping paper from the man when he left the store. Willie Nelson Finds Inspiration On Christmas Eve When he walked back outside, the snow had picked up, and he circled Leonard’s to see if he could locate Frankie. He never did, and it’s still something he thinks about to this day. Willie actually wrote a book about the man he saw in Fort Worth, where he imagines what would’ve happened if he’d actually gotten to know him: “And all these years, I’ve wondered about the man that inspired that song. A poor soul who was selling wrapping paper by the side of the road, singing to lift his spirits and stay warm.” While I'm sure it would've been amazing to meet the man and get a chance to hear his story in first-person, something about the mystique and mystery of it all is really special too. The song itself is another refreshing reminder this holiday season from the great Willie Nelson about what’s important… and I don’t think the writers of “Jingle Bells” or “Frosty the Snowman” can come close to that. His performance of it at Austin City Limits in 1993 is one of the best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2wApFEdEdk&feature=emb_title In 2020, Willie teamed up Dolly Parton for her Christmas album, A Holly Dolly Christmas, to do an updated version of "Pretty Paper": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB0qUAL95A0&feature=emb_title

English Dolly Parton Impersonator Goes Viral For Her Uncanny ‘Dolly: An Original Musical’ Audition

I had to do a double-take. The search is on for the perfect Dolly Parton to play the legendary country music artist in her upcoming Broadway musical Dolly: An Original Musical. Last week, the Tennessee native made a social media announcement that the search for Dolly was officially on, and she welcomed anyone who thinks they might be a good fit for the role to submit an audition video. "I'm announcing the search for Dolly. Now, whether you're chasing your dreams from a small town or you've spent years performing on stages across the country, I want to give you the chance to help me bring my story to Broadway. And maybe even play me!  This show is a celebration of my music, my life, and all the amazing people who've been with me along the way. Now, we are looking for talented performers who can capture the spirit of my journey, whether you're an experienced theater professional or an undiscovered gem with that little special something.  The selected few will get the chance to audition in person in front of our show's casting director." https://www.instagram.com/p/DDNCk8vRVcq/ Since the announcement, many fans of Dolly Parton have submitted their auditions, but Parton also encouraged folks to post their auditions online using #SearchForDolly in the caption. These videos have taken off since the search announcement, and some great talent has been highlighted thus far. My TikTok For You Page has been filled with incredible covers of Dolly Parton songs as the search is underway, but one user is gaining a lot of social media attention for her uncanny impersonation. Kelly O'Brien, who is from Hertfordshire, England, is a Dolly Parton impersonator. But don't let the fact that she's from across the pond fool you into thinking she can't lay down the thick East Tennessee twang that Parton has. After introducing herself in the video, she begins speaking in her Dolly accent, and it's SPOT ON. Given that she's also standing in front of the camera in her full Dolly Parton get-u,p if she had not introduced herself initially, I would have had to do a double take; it's that accurate. O'Brien then goes into singing a stellar rendition of "Blue Smoke" and even clacks her acrylic nails together like Parton does when she's workshopping a song. @thedollyshowtribute As promised here is my second song! #BlueSmoke Just 15 more songs to record before I submit my favourite to #Dolly and her team for @dollymusical #searchfordolly is just an wonderful opportunity for me to perform some of Dolly’s best songs! She is so amazing! ? #dollyparton #dollypartontribute #dollypartonimpersonator ♬ original sound - Kelly O’Brien This, however, was the second audition video that O'Brien submitted. Her first video highlights her in another Dolly Parton look-a-like outfit, singing "Here You Come Again." Once again, I am mind-blown by this woman's talent and ability to transform into Dolly Parton fully. Kelly O'Brien has everything from the look to the accent to the vocals. To the casting director of Dolly's musical: If this woman does not receive an in-person audition, we are rioting. This IS Dolly! @thedollyshowtribute Here is my first song for #Searchfordolly The fabulous #Hereyoucomeagain ? Just 16 more songs to record until I choose a winner to send to @Dolly Parton and her team @dollymusical Each song I sing will come with a different #Dolly outfit! What’s your favourite? What shall I sing next?? #searchfordolly #dollyparton #dollypartonimpersonator #TheDollyShow ♬ original sound - Kelly O’Brien Check out some of the comments left on her two audition videos. "You're telling me this isn't Dolly Parton?" "The English accent straight to Dolly’s precious southern drawl…..you’re a wizard!!!" "Your speaking voice is absolutely spot on." "This is scary how good this is!!!" "If you aren’t at the top of their list, then we all need to riot." "Dolly would be impressed." "It’s funny how she goes from British to USA southern in a second. Her Dolly is dead on." "You have her voice on point, but most importantly, you have her light laugh on point!! Love it." "HOLY SMOKES." "OMG!! The nails used as an instrument!! So Dolly!!" She also brought out the iconic Dolly Parton Dallas Cowboys cheerleader outfit: @thedollyshowtribute This weekend I decided to recreate the @Dolly Parton Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader look! It was super fun, and even the doggy loved it. ??? #dollyparton #TheDollyShow #dollypartontribute ♬ 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton

Red Clay Strays Sing Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” With Gabriella Rose At The National Finals Rodeo

Laying down a classic in Las Vegas. The National Finals Rodeo (The NFR) is more than just the Super Bowl of rodeos. It's also a mecca for country music. Throughout the ten rounds of the Wrangler NFR, there are countless bands and musicians that make their way to Las Vegas, Nevada, to perform for the attendees. Because what goes hand in hand with rodeoing...besides beer. Yes... Country music. Some of this year's entertainment included Zach Top, Riley Green, Cody Jinks, Ian Munsick, Aaron Watson, Tyler Halverson, Colter Wall, and many more. And, of course, the artists also hang around to watch some of the rodeos and pop on stage with some of their friends when they can. Zach Top made a surprise appearance during one of Riley Green's sets, and they laid down a solid gold medley of '90s anthems like "Time Marches One," "Should've Been A Cowboy," and more. Now it's the Red Clay Strays' turn to bring up one of their friends to the stage. During their show, they brought up the viral artist Gabriella Rose, who dominated the internet with her newly released single "Doublewide." Rose was also just announced as the supporting act on J.R. Carroll's Hometown Hero Tour, so she's on a roll now, stepping on stage with the Mobile, Alabama band. Instead of having Rose join them for one of their songs, the group decided to cover an all-time country classic: Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." Frontman Brandon Coleman takes the first verse, bringing the high-energy lyrics to life before handing it over to Rose for the second verse. The Red Clays Strays and Gabriella Rose's sound has an old soul that transports listeners back in time. Their vocals, which sound well beyond their years, would garner Johnny Cash's stamp of approval. During the bridge, Coleman steps back from the microphone to focus on his guitar part, giving off an Elvis-like vibe as he bops to the rhythm. This performance is screaming Viva Las Vegas; we are here for it. I'd love to hear more from this duo in the future; their vocals and vibe complement each other so well. "I hear the train a-comin', it's rolling 'round the bend And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when I'm stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin' on But that train keeps a-rollin' on down to San Antone" @theredclaystrays Glad we got to sing one with ya @Gabriella Rose ♬ original sound - The Red Clay Strays We are not the only ones left speechless after this performance; check out a few of our favorite comments. "Johnny Cash would approve of this band and this cover." "Yes! More Red Clay Strays and Gabriella Rose, please." "I don't think there's a song they can't sing!!" "Brandon Coleman is the songbird of our generation." "Please record this." While you're here, fire up the original from The Man in Black. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeZRYhLDLeU
