Critics blast Jaguar over weird new car-less ad: 'Jaguar just pulled a Bud Light'

The British luxury vehicle brand Jaguar released a bizarre new ad Tuesday, prompting intense criticism along with questions about whether the company was still in the business of making cars and whether it may have confused November for so-called Pride month. Jaguar leaned into the backlash to its loud and car-less campaign ostensibly celebrating deviancy, suggesting that its hackneyed call to defy the "ordinary" — already uniformly and reflexively resisted by massive companies, Western governments, the media, and various other institutions unmoored by tradition — was an introduction to "the future." Provocative advertisements have long been used to court controversy, secure earned media, and remind the public that a company and its products still exist. Facing a chicken delivery management crisis in the United Kingdom and widespread closures, the KFC Corporation leaned on the creative agency Mother in 2018 for a novel way to simultaneously apologize and advertise — printing "FCK," the anagram of its brand name, on chicken buckets. Volkswagen ran its playful "Think Small" campaign in the 1960s to promote the Beetle. Red Bull, evidently keen to sell more energy drinks, had Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner take a helium balloon up to an altitude of 39 kilometers, jump, break the sound barrier, and land on his feet in New Mexico. Apple released an ad earlier this year titled "Crush" in which a compressor destroyed the various tools and means for real-world artistic endeavors and in-person activities that its new device would apparently replace and virtualize. On Tuesday, Jaguar gave it a go, launching an ad campaign on social media with the caption "Copy nothing." The video opens with a feminine individual with a Pacman-shaped afro leading five androgynous individuals dressed in misshapen apparel out of an elevator and onto a pink moonscape. The text "delete ordinary" appears over a subsequent shot of an individual painting white lines. 'Fire your marketing team.' In the following shot, a masculine figure wearing a dress and wielding a yellow sledgehammer appears in a blue room with the text "Break moulds." Finally, the cast of androgynes, now joined by a heavyset black woman, crews together on the pink moonscape and strikes a well-choreographed pose. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in response to the ad, "Do you sell cars?" Conservative writer and author Peachy Keenan shared a screenshot of the opening still and wrote, "You lost me at :01." Keenan added, "Copy nothing [b]ut the worst, stalest cultural trends so you can subvert a storied brand. Congrats and no thanks." "Well ... we know where the advertising team for Bud Light went," wrote Nick Freitas, Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates. "Jaguar just pulled a Bud Light," wrote End Wokeness. "Wtf is this?" Conservative filmmaker Robby Starbuck tweeted, "Fire your marketing team and drop the woke stuff." When asked, "What the actual hell is this[?]" the company responded, "The future." The company's corresponding splash page states, "We're here to delete ordinary. To go bold. To copy nothing." Rather than credit the Ohio band Devo or fashion designer Pierre Cardin with its new aesthetic, Jaguar said in a release that its "transformation is defined by Exuberant Modernism, a creative philosophy that underpins all aspects of the new Jaguar brand world." Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover suggested to Car Dealer Magazine that the company is looking to sell to "younger, more affluent, and urban livers." Like Blaze News? Latest on Trump's cases: Where do the president-elect's legal challenges stand?

Donald Trump's presidential victory earlier this month has thrown the trajectory of his legal challenges into question. On Tuesday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) asked for the New York criminal case against Trump to be put on hold during his presidency. 'A total and definitive victory for President Trump and the American people.'While Trump's legal team sought to dismiss the case outright, Bragg opted instead to freeze it. Bragg's move may suggest that he hopes to revisit the case after Trump is no longer in office.Prosecutors from Bragg's office wrote to Judge Juan Merchan, "The people deeply respect the office of the president, are mindful of the demands and obligations of the presidency, and acknowledge that defendant's inauguration will raise unprecedented legal questions.""We also deeply respect the fundamental role of the jury in our constitutional system," prosecutors added.Trump, who was found guilty on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, was slated to face sentencing on November 26. With Merchan's approval of Bragg's freeze request, that date will be pushed back indefinitely.Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump, celebrated the pause and called it "a total and definitive victory for President Trump and the American people."He told the New York Times, "The lawless case is now stayed, and President Trump's legal team is moving to get it dismissed once and for all."The other state-level case lodged against Trump — this one in Georgia — also appears to be on hold. On Monday evening, the state appeals court abruptly canceled a December 5 pretrial hearing to determine whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified from the case after it was discovered she was having an affair with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, who has since stepped down. The court did not provide a reason for the decision but noted that the hearing was tossed "until further order of this court."Defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant, who brought the motion to recuse Willis, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the unexpected cancellation is "not something you normally see.""They could reschedule it," Merchant said. "It could mean they don't need to hear oral arguments and can decide it on the merits."Townhall columnist Phil Holloway concurred with Merchant's assessment, predicting that the court "might" be prepared to rule without hearing oral arguments."If so, that likely means bad news for Willis," Holloway stated. The two federal cases against Trump, led by special counsel Jack Smith, also seem to be nearing their conclusions. Sources told the Times that Smith intends to wrap up his involvement with the cases and step down before Trump's inauguration, Blaze News previously reported. For the Washington, D.C., federal case alleging that Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election, Smith has requested the cancellation of all related deadlines. In the Florida case in which Trump was charged with improperly handling classified documents, Judge Aileen Cannon of the Southern District of Florida had already dismissed the charges. While Smith initially sought to appeal the dismissal, he moved to put that appeal on hold last week. The Department of Justice has a long-standing policy not to prosecute a sitting president, claiming that it "would impermissibly undermine the capacity of the executive branch to perform its constitutionally assigned functions," according to its website.Like Blaze News? Al Sharpton demands Trump 'deliver for black America' with admin positions

Left-wing activist Al Sharpton issued a sharp rebuke of President-elect Donald Trump over his Cabinet and administration nominations and demanded he "deliver" for black America. Sharpton issued a statement Tuesday after Trump made several nominations to his Cabinet and other administration positions. 'The president-elect needs to put his money where his mouth is if he actually wants to deliver for Black America.'“In the two weeks since Donald Trump was elected to a second term, he has put forth a dozen troubling nominees, yet the most alarming factor in his proposed cabinet is that not a single candidate is Black,” wrote Sharpton. He went on to point out the Trump campaign focused on garnering the vote of blacks, especially males, in the presidential election. He also criticized the controversial nomination of Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz (R) as U.S. attorney general. “Trump spent this campaign selling himself to Black voters, especially men, by peddling sneakers and implying his criminal convictions would resonate with our community. Instead of meeting the demands of more Black voters who supported him, Donald Trump has proposed an Attorney General nominee wrapped up in an ethics probe over trafficking allegations and a Health Secretary whose views on vaccines and other safeguards could devastate our community." Sharpton then mocked Trump for comparing himself to Abraham Lincoln. "Right now, it appears that the self-proclaimed ‘best president for Black America since Abraham Lincoln’ has lost interest in us," he concluded. "The president-elect needs to put his money where his mouth is if he actually wants to deliver for Black America.”Some Republican members of Congress have publicly opined that Gaetz has zero chance of being approved for attorney general, but others are convinced the nomination is pivotal for the success of the incoming Trump administration. Sharpton has faced criticism after the Harris-Walz campaign divulged in finance records that it had given his nonprofit organization half a million dollars prior to a softball interview between Harris and the activist. Sharpton was paid $650,00 by the nonprofit in 2021. Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

Frequent Battlefield 6 Playtests Attempt To Avoid Another Disaster

Although Battlefield 5 was launched in a fairly inadequate state, the subsequent release, Battlefield 2042, proved to be a disaster over 10 times larger, failing not only on a technical level but also in terms of sales, player counts, and poor user ratings.

Microsoft is the mystery AI company licensing HarperCollins books, says Bloomberg

Illustration: The Verge Just one day after 404 Media revealed that HarperCollins struck a three-year AI training deal with an unnamed company, Bloomberg now says Microsoft will use the publisher’s content to train a not-yet-announced AI model. HarperCollins said in a statement to 404 Media that its deal will include “select nonfiction backlist titles” and that authors will have to opt into the training program. One author, Daniel Kibblesmith, posted screenshots a few days ago showing that he was offered $2,500 per book for a three-year AI licensing contract. Asked what would be an offer he’d consider taking, Kibblesmith said in a post on Tuesday, “I’d probably do it for a billion dollars. I’d do it for an amount of money that wouldn’t require me to work... Continue reading…
