Nuro expands driverless testing after pivoting to licensing its AV tech

Image: Nuro In the wake of pivoting its business strategy to include robotaxis and driver assist, Nuro is taking its fully autonomous vehicles to new geographic areas. The California-based company, which currently operates a small fleet of driverless vehicles in California and Texas, said it would grow its operational design domain and expand the deployment of its zero-occupant, Level 4 vehicles. In Mountain View and Palo Alto, Nuro says it will see an 83 percent increase in the deployment area, while Houston will see a 70 percent increase. Its vehicles will also take on new, more complex driving environments, such as multi-lane roads at speeds of up to 35mph, driving around emergency vehicles, buses, and construction sites, and driving at night.... Samsung finally starts Wear OS 5 rollout for older Galaxy Watches

The update will first come to the Galaxy Watch 6 before arriving on previous Wear OS models. | Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge There’s good news if you’ve got an older Samsung Galaxy Watch: the company announced today that it’s finally begun rolling out One UI 6 Watch to its older Wear OS smartwatches. One UI 6 Watch is Samsung’s take on Wear OS 5, and brings with it a host of new features. On the health and fitness front, that includes AI-powered health tips, FDA-cleared sleep apnea detection, and Energy Score, a new metric for gauging recovery from exercise and physical stress. (You can read more about how these three features work in our Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Ring, and Ultra reviews.) Meanwhile, the new Workout Routine feature allows you to create a custom workout by combining various activity types. Also included is the Race feature for runners and... Continue reading…

If Netflix can’t make live work, can anyone?

Image by: The Verge; Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images for Netflix The Paul / Tyson fight on Friday was very popular. Netflix streamed it into more than 60 million households, which is a huge number for any TV event, much less a streaming-only one. Whether the whole thing went well, though, is another matter. The fight itself wasn’t very exciting, and for a large portion of the audience it wouldn’t have mattered if it was — all they could see was laggy, pixelated nothingness. Netflix is clearly bought in to live programming and sports, but is it ready to do it big? On this episode of The Vergecast, The Verge’s Richard Lawler joins the show to talk through the state of sports streaming. We talk about the ups and downs of the Netflix live-streaming experiments so far, what’s at stake for the company’s... Continue reading…

Control 2 will be an action RPG

Control. | Image: Remedy Entertainment We already knew that the supernatural thriller Control was getting a sequel, but now Remedy has provided some more details on the game. Well, one major detail: Control 2 will be an action RPG, seemingly deviating from the action-adventure template set by the original. The news came during an investors presentation, in which the studio revealed a few other tidbits about its franchises: Alan Wake 2 has sold over 1.8 million copies, the “ultimate edition” of Control hits Mac on February 12th, and it will also be getting a free update of some kind next year that will unlock “previously released content.” A large part of the presentation was devoted to Remedy’s ambitious plan to build out an interconnected universe, which will span not only... Amazon Music Unlimited now includes a free audiobook each month

Image: Amazon Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers can now get one free audiobook per month — similar to the freebie Spotify started tossing Premium listeners last year. The perk is available to Music Unlimited subscribers in the US, Canada, and the UK, offering access to Audible’s library of more than 1 million audiobooks. Amazon says individual subscribers and the primary account holder for family plans “can listen to one audiobook at a time — of any length — per month.” If a user doesn’t finish the audiobook during the month, they can continue listening to the same audiobook the following month, or choose a new title. Subscribers will lose access to the audiobook at the end of their billing cycle if they cancel or pause their Amazon Music... Continue reading…

Instagram will finally let you reset algorithm recommendations

Instagram will finally let you reset algorithm recommendations

One of the best features yet is about to hit Instagram as a test. According to a Meta newsroom post, the social media platform has started offering some users the ability to reset their Instagram algorithm recommendations across Explore, Reels, and Feed to a fresh start. "In addition to providing built-in protections from sensitive content with Teen Accounts, we want to give teens new ways to shape their Instagram experience so it can continue to reflect their passions and interests as they evolve," says the blog post. Even so, the ability to reset Instagram's algorithm is available as a test for everyone. Here's how to do it: On the Instagram app, there's a new Content Preferences option Choose Reset Content Suggestion Review the people and topics you follow, then take this fresh start After that, Instagram will start displaying suggestions about topics that may be different from what users usually see. The social media platform says the reset can't be undone, but suggestions will become more personalized as you like, share, and interact with the app. It also won't change who you follow or ad topics, although you can choose to update those before you reset. Finally, this won't delete the data Instagram uses to personalize your experience in "other ways." Instagram says it will help you improve the algorithm recommendation on the app. For example, on the Explore page, you can tap the three dots in the corner of the post and select "Interested" or "Not Interested." Instagram also talks about other tools it offers to teenagers to improve their recommendations and their overall experience. In a few markets, they can choose topics they want to see more, switch to a Following Feed to see, in chronological order, content from accounts they follow, and the social media platform even highlights Close Friends, which gives teens "more control over who sees their Stories." Ship Wrecked in Norway’s Deepest Lake 700 Years Ago Reveals its Secrets

A ship that sunk in Norway’s deepest lake several centuries ago has been identified as a føringsbåt, a type of boat that was used to haul cargo and passengers between 1300 and 1900 AD. These particular vessels were actually built specifically to cross Lake Mjøsa, Norway’s largest lake (73 miles or 117 kilometers long), and have been used for that purpose since medieval times. The 33-foot (10-meter) medieval boat was first spotted on the bottom of the lake at a depth of approximately 1,300 feet (400 meters) in 2022. This was an accidental result of a sonar search undertaken by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim and the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), which was designed to find munitions that had been dumped in the lake during World War II. Unfortunately, the scientists responsible for this exciting discovery were only able to return to get a good look at the wreck this past October, which is why until now it had been considered a mystery ship. Vanna White Looks Totally Different Off The ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ Set

Photos of Vanna White outside of her role as Wheel of Fortune’s letter turner have fans talking, as the 67-year-old looks unrecognizable. It was a surprise to see her without makeup and in regular clothes, which is a contrast to her glamorous appearance on the popular game show. Vanna’s all-natural snap made it to X, featuring her in a gray New York sweatshirt, her bare face, and her hair pulled back in a ponytail with glasses on top. She was likely running errands as she held onto a parcel and her smartphone during the stroll. Fans react as Vanna White looks unrecognizable without makeup Guess who? #vannawhite pic.twitter.com/Hes8grUfRz — Ms. Smith (@MsSmith17743658) November 14, 2024   Vanna’s paparazzi shot was posted with the caption, “Guess who?” likely hoping to evoke a reaction. On the contrary, a few users came to Vanna’s defense, saying she cannot look perfect all the time. “HEY, Vanna is human, too!!!” someone exclaimed. Another asked that fans give her a break, noting that she does not look any different except for her bare face. “She’s allowed run errands without an evening gown on,” they argued. “This BS is the reason women & girls struggle w/self image! She’s a 67 year old in amazing shape! It’s called aging & happens to us all,” a third person clapped back. Vanna White/ImageCollect Will Vanna White get replaced by a younger woman? Since former host Pat Sajak retired from Wheel of Fortune, and with the arrival of the younger Ryan Seacrest, Vanna is allegedly looking for ways to appear youthful and slimmer. Insiders say she fears being replaced by a younger person and sometimes feels intimidated by Ryan’s looks. Vanna White/ImageCollect So far, the new duo have been getting along just fine on set, with Vanna still showing up in her gorgeous outfits and a full face of makeup. Ryan is not left out of the criticism either, as trolls have called him out for getting beauty enhancements like Botox and a facelift to look perfect for the camera. Next up: Michael J.
