Couple Uses Wedding Fund to Pay for Surgery on Injured Dog Found on Side of Road: ‘She Deserved a Chance’

A couple in Arkansas have emptied their savings and wedding fund to save a 10-month old dog found stricken by the side of the road. Weeks have passed, and their their love has inspired $39,000 in donations to help save the pooch and replace the money they so self-sacrificingly forked over for emergency surgery. It […] The post Couple Uses Wedding Fund to Pay for Surgery on Injured Dog Found on Side of Road: ‘She Deserved a Chance’ appeared first on Good News Network.

Meta’s Empire Faces a Breakup Threat as FTC Lawsuit Gains Momentum

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. A US federal judge has decided that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) can proceed with its lawsuit against Meta which could see the giant broken up over alleged anti-competitive behavior. The issue is the way Meta came to be “put together” – namely, the two acquisitions that added Instagram and WhatsApp to Facebook (in 2012 and 2014, respectively). We obtained a copy of the ruling for you here. The allegations against Meta hinge on the fact it chose to spend record amounts of money (the FTC believes, intentionally overpay) for the two platforms. 12 years ago, Facebook bought Instagram for what was then a record $1 billion, while WhatsApp cost the company a staggering $19 billion only two years later. FTC’s conclusion is that such decisions could have been made only with the goal of eliminating competition. Meta tried to get the lawsuit dismissed but managed only in the part that concerns third-party app developers. Namely, Meta will not have to face trial over the regulator’s claim that it required developers not to compete with its own key services – as a condition for gaining access to the platform. In a bid to get the entire filing dismissed, Meta asserted that it in fact operates in a competitive market, citing Google’s YouTube (that would be a duopoly…), but also TikTok (launched in 2016), and for some reason Microsoft and Twitter. These companies’ share in the social media market at the time of the acquisitions was limited, to say the least. US District Court for the District of Columbia Judge James Boasberg was clearly unimpressed with this argument and has now allowed the key elements of the case, filed in 2020 during President Trump’s first term, to go to trial. The FTC, currently chaired by Democrat Lina Khan, made sure to note in a spokesperson’s statement that the lawsuit got “refined” during the outgoing administration. According to the FTC spokesperson, it is “a bipartisan effort to curtail Meta’s monopoly power and restore competition to ensure freedom and innovation in the social media ecosystem.” Back in 2021, a federal court swiftly dismissed the case, but now, three years into FTC’s “refining” – it appears the time is at last right for a trial, although a date is yet to be announced. Canada’s Censorship Crusade Targets Tech Giants in a Push for “Disinformation” Control

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Over the last four years, Canada’s Liberal government headed by Justin Trudeau got itself heavily aligned with the neighbor to the south on several key but also very contentious issues – such as restrictive Covid measures, various forms of pressure on tech companies, and “disinformation” censorship. A flurry of controversial bills in Canada, some of which became law, serve to cement this impression. Now, as President Trump prepares to start his second term in office in the US, Canada’s “orphaned” ruling class continues with the “disinformation” narrative – either as a sign of long-term commitment or looking for new “disinformation partners” elsewhere in the world – or simply as a sign of inertia. Time will tell, and it will be interesting to see, but for the moment, news out of Canada speaks about a report compiled by the House of Commons Heritage Committee, titled, “Tech Giants’ Intimidation and Subversion Tactics to Evade Regulation in Canada and Globally.” How about the tactics deployed in Canada – and globally – using all manner of intimidation and subversion to evade citizens’ right to free speech? Maybe another day, by another ruling coalition. Right now, the Liberals, the New Democratic Party, and Bloc Québécois stand behind statements such as this one, found in the cumbersomely-named report: “The Government of Canada notes some individuals and groups create disinformation to promote political ideologies including extremist views and conspiracy theories or simply to make money.” This looks like a call to combine (yet more) censorship with (yet more) deplatforming. And the ones to “fix” things for Canada’s current government are companies behind major social platforms, like Meta and Google. It’s always fascinating to see that even today, there are still those willing to claim that these giants could possibly “do more” (censorship, that is) than they have been earnestly doing, for years. But the group of Canada’s MPs behind the report believes so. They want mechanisms put in place “to detect undesirable or questionable content that may be the product of disinformation or foreign interference and that these platforms be required to promptly identify such content and report it to users.” Does Canadian parliament’s pressure on US tech companies not count as “foreign interference”? Unclear. Another thing that’s unclear –  as in, undefined in the report – is what its authors have in mind when they mention “disinformation” and, “conspiracy theories.” It’s as if these terms have become “art for art’s sake.” Whatever that may be, Canada’s ruling parliamentarians want specific actions against these undefined phenomena to be enforced by tech companies. “Failure to do so should result in penalties,” reads the document. Wilderness Survival: How To Prevent Injury During Emergencies Off Grid

Wilderness survival know-how is an important skill every self-sufficient homesteader should have handy. Whether you're out in the mountains or a few miles from civilization, wilderness survival is a must for every homesteader! Handy Wilderness Survival Tips, Tricks, And Guide Exploring the wild, or anything out of your safe or comfort zone, can get a little rough especially when mother nature wants to give you a little challenge. You can either feel helpless and afraid when you're alone or you can channel your inner Bear Grylls and be the master of improvised wilderness skills. Educating yourself with how you can possibly get injured in the wild would be beneficial for your wilderness survival. We narrowed down some of the unexpected circumstances or injuries that could happen to you while you're out with nature's elements. Here's a list of ways you can be injured in the wild and how to avoid serious wilderness survival mistakes. 1. Broken Bones, Head Injuries, or Spinal Cord Injuries When you're out in the wild, the most common accident that can occur is slipping and falling. This can result in a simple bruise in your leg or knee or more serious injuries such as broken bones, head injuries, and spinal cord injuries. You should always carry bandages to wrap around the injury or you can make your own crutch with a branch for first aid. Additionally, you need to be more cautious when you tread an unknown path to avoid accidental slips and falls. I would recommend bringing trekking poles or walking sticks with you if you're going to cross rivers or tread an uphill or downhill path. Walking sticks help you balance, thus, reducing the risks of slipping and falling. 2. Thunderstorms and Lightning Being deep in the woods where the mountain creates its own weather, thunder and lightning are inevitable. Lightning tends to strike in the afternoon, therefore it's safest to hike in the early hours of the morning. If you get caught in a lightning storm and don't have a shelter nearby, find the best landscape near you. A cave would be one of the best choices or get inside a tree-heavy area. You should get away from exposed areas and avoid tall solitary trees. Get as low as possible. Crouch and hug your body into your knees to keep you low. Ensure your brain, heart, and lungs are not directly against the ground. 3. Forest Fire Due to extreme heat, forest fires can happen in a split second. You need to look around you and search for signs. Move to lower elevation when the fire is coming from a higher ground. On the contrary, when the fire comes from the lower ground, you should travel carefully and strategically to avoid the heat and flames. Try reaching bodies of water that can help stop the fire. 4. Poisonous Vegetation In the wild, you'll be submerged in plants and trees and sometimes, it would be hard to identify what is poisonous or not. Poison oak, poison ivy, and poison sumac are among the most common poisonous plants you should be aware of as they can cause severe itching. Here's how you can identify them: Poison oak normally grows in clusters of three but there are some varieties having five, seven, or nine leaves per cluster. This poisonous plant grows as a shrub, bearing white or greenish yellow berries. Poison ivy grows as a low shrub, ground cover, or a vine climbing up most trees. Its leaves are solid green in color, which can either be dull or glossy. Like poison oaks, it grows in clusters of three. During summer, the plant produces yellow-green flowers and white berries. If you're in a swampy location, beware of poison sumac as it normally thrives in these areas. This plant bears seven to thirteen leaflets and its leaves sometimes have dark brown to black spots filled with urushiol — an oily organic compound causing allergic reactions. The best way to refrain from getting an itchy rash from these poisonous plants is to identify them immediately. Also, always stay on paths and avoid wandering or touching trees or plants you're unfamiliar of. 5. Animal Attack Being one with nature also means having to share with the wild animals their natural habitat. Grizzly bears can be avoided by a special pepper spray, whereas lions and wolfs can easily shy away from you except when it's been a long time since their last meal. Alligators in bodies of water can be avoided by running away in a direct, straight line to the opposite direction. If you've heard of running in a zig-zag line, that's not going to work with gators. Stick with the straight line and run as fast as you can! A bite from either a non-venomous or venomous snake can give you major pain and can also cause severe irritation, depending on the person. The best way to avoid snake bites is to simply avoid snakes. Always pay attention to your surroundings as snakes can hide and strike in a split second. Use a stick to poke around when gathering wood or food and watch for movements on the ground. If there's a wolf attack, stand still and stand up tall. Don't make direct eye contact; it's as if you're challenging them. Just slowly back away from the wolf and raise your arms to help you appear larger. Moreover, always carry a knife so you can stab your predators in cases of close encounters and always be ready to run. Another general rule when you're outdoors is to not cook where you sleep. The smell of food is like an open invitation for wild animals in your camping ground, which could result in an animal attack. 6. Hypothermia The weather outdoors can go from extreme heat to extreme cold real quick. To avoid hypothermia, you can engage in a simple exercise so your body will naturally produce heat and build a fire on your camping site using dry logs and downed trees. You can also avoid going near cold bodies of water so you won't accidentally slip and freeze. 7. Hyperthermia If you're exposed to extreme heat, then you're at risk of hyperthermia. Basically, this happens when one's body absorbs more heat than it should release. To avoid hyperthermia, it's vital to drink plenty of water. Also, find a shady spot where you can cool off and rest. You should also wear cool clothing to lessen the chances of suffering from hyperthermia.   For wilderness survival tips when you're alone, watch this video: When out in the wilderness, there are circumstances out of your control, but you can always control your reactions. They Took in Stray Cat and Seven Kittens, Next Day the Cat Showed Them Gratitude in Most Touching Way

They took in a stray cat and her seven kittens. The next day, the cat showed them gratitude in the most touching way. Peach Poptart and her kittensEllenRichterWhile caring for community cats and working to bring them to safety, a family discovered a stray cat with her seven newborn kittens.Knowing they needed a safe place, the family contacted their local animal rescue, Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions. Ellen Richter, a foster volunteer, immediately responded and went to pick up the feline family. She carefully loaded the momma cat and her babies into her car, starting their new journey to a foster home. EllenRichterThe mom was understandably nervous during the car ride. She meowed anxiously, her wary eyes darting around.Ellen prepared a cozy space for the cat and her kittens, layering it with soft blankets for extra comfort. Though shy at first, the cat didn't try to hide, staying close to her kittens, who were fast asleep in a cuddle puddle. EllenRichterEllen noticed that whenever she spoke softly to the cat, Peach Poptart, her face would relax as if soothed by the sound of her voice. She kept talking until Peach felt comfortable enough to lie on her side, offering her belly for her kittens to nurse. That night, Peach slept with a full belly, her precious seven nestled against her, basking in warmth and comfort. EllenRichter"Mama is feeling very comfortable, relaxed and calm. She has two dilute torties, two calicos, one tortoiseshell, an orange baby, and one orange and white."The worries in her eyes melted away, replaced by a calm, contented look. EllenRichterPeach lavishes her kittens with unconditional love. "They are all plump and healthy."Raising a litter of seven is no small feat, so Ellen has been supplementing to give Peach some well-deserved rest. Whenever she enters the room, she's greeted by Peach's rumbling purrs as the mama blissfully kneads her blanket. EllenRichterFor the first day, Peach didn't leave her kittens, not even to eat, so Ellen brought the food to her. With a comfy nest and food-in-bed service all day, Peach grew fond of her foster mom and started greeting her with adorable meows.Once Ellen sat down, she'd come over, nuzzling her hand and flopping onto her arm. EllenRichterWhile the kittens snoozed in a cozy pile, Peach rested her head on Ellen's hand, her loud purrs filling the room. After roaming the streets for likely most of her life, she's so thankful for a roof over her head, nourishing meals, and the affection of a caring human. In just a few days, Peach has blossomed into a real snuggle bug. EllenRichterShe loves to lean into her foster mom, using her hand as a pillow while kneading the blanket beside her. She often gazes up to Ellen, her eyes brimming with affection as she makes biscuits.Though already a mom, Peach is still a baby at heart and can't wait to romp around like a kitten again once she's finished raising her last litter. EllenRichterAs the kittens get bigger and stronger, their curious, playful sides will emerge. They have a doting mother tending to their every need and a loving family ensuring their future is bright."Most of the kittens have their eyes open. They are growing so fast." EllenRichterPeach is reveling in her new life as an indoor cat, surrounded by her precious seven.Once she realized she was safe, her true personality came out, melting the hearts of everyone she touched.
