Welcome to This Week In just 71 days, Donald Trump will be sworn in again as President of the United States. His comeback victory, unlike anything we have ever seen in American history. Just take a look at the final results. With Arizona now projected for Trump, he locks in a sweeping victory in every single battleground state, and Trump did more than that. He made big gains with young voters and with Latinos, doing better among Hispanic voters than any Republican presidential candidate since the first exit polls were conducted in 1976. He even did better among women than when he ran against Joe Biden. He also made significant gains in some of the most Democratic places in the country, doing better in places like Brooklyn, New Jersey, and Chicago. And in deep blue California, Donald Trump is on track to do better than any Republican in two decades- and he was running against a Californian! California voters also rejected liberal policies on taxes, rent control, and crime. They voted overwhelmingly to approve Proposition 36, which imposes tougher penalties for shoplifting and drug possession. Both the mayor of San Francisco and the liberal district attorney in Los Angeles were voted out. A rejection of liberal policies, particularly on crime in some of the most liberal jurisdictions in the United States. Regardless of what you think about the outcome, whether you are happy about it or fearful, this week was a victory for democracy. Turnout was near record high and when the votes were counted, the losing candidate didn't cry foul or make false allegations of election fraud or try to overturn the will of the voters. She gave a gracious concession speech, and the outgoing president promised to ensure a smooth and peaceful transfer of power, with Biden and Trump scheduled to meet at The White House on Wednesday. Democracy worked, even if it brought us a President Elect who many argued is a threat to democracy. Now the question turns to what the man who tried to overturn a democratic election four years ago will do with his mandate.  Had Kamala Harris won the election, particularly in such a resounding manner, would George Stephanopoulos have deferred the post-election to his co-hosts? You and I both know the answer is an emphatic no, and that Jon Karl definitely drew the short straw for this assignment. So it is that this week’s broadcast begins, as did many shows throughout the 2024 electoral cycle, with a lengthy, overwrought editorial. This one, while slightly different in substance, is the same as the others both in tone and tenor. After years of howling to viewers about Donald Trump being an existential threat to democracy thus attempting to make the choice for them, the American public listened to those arguments and chose otherwise. Donald Trump is the duly elected president. Once again. Despite four years of media caterwauling, grotesque bias, and promotion of lawfare and government censorship. If you listen closely, you can hear the bits of crow stuck in Karl’s throat as he reads these words off of the teleprompter. But Karl couldn’t let it go without getting one last shot in.  More than likely, this wasn’t so much a monologue as it was a workshopping of the introduction to Karl’s fourth book about Trump. The election is over, but the obsession remains.

A California special education teacher is accused of grooming and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old student. The Los Angeles teacher also had sex with the underage boy in her classroom and provided him with marijuana, according to police. On Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department arrested 43-year-old Colleen Jo Matarico.Matarico is in custody on $1.3 million bail.Police said in a statement that Matarico of Valley Village "groomed and sexually assaulted a 13-year-old victim in her classroom, and later convinced the victim to have sexual intercourse in her vehicle." Police said the special education teacher also provided marijuana to the boy and added that "detectives believe there are additional, unidentified victims of Matarico who have yet to come forward."Matarico was charged with five counts of lewd acts with a minor, two counts of lewd acts with a minor 14 or 15 years old, and one count of furnishing marijuana to a minor.Matarico's LinkedIn profile states she is a special education teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District.According to the John Burroughs Middle School website, Matarico was listed as “a teacher.”School principal Dr. Steve Martinez told the school community Thursday in a message shared with the New York Post that the teacher was removed from campus after the school contacted police. The Post said Matarico wasn't named in the letter.“District protocols are being followed and we remain in cooperation with local authorities. Due to the ongoing investigation by law enforcement, we are unable to disclose additional details about this matter,” the principal wrote, according to the Post.“We understand that some students may be impacted by this incident. Students can always reach out to teachers, counselors or school staff for support,” he added, the paper said.Matarico is in custody on $1.3 million bail.Police are urging any other victims to contact the LAPD's Juvenile Division Abused Child Section at 424-259-7097. President-elect Donald Trump has "no enemies list," Rep. Byron Donalds told Fox News Sunday, adding that he is instead concentrating on creating "success" for everyone in the United States.

In a little-known chapter of American history, slave owners across the nation decided to shave their heads in solidarity after Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States. This surprising act of solidarity, termed the “Slave Shave” has been largely forgotten by history, but a newly discovered collection of letters and journals sheds light on this fascinating and bizarre moment in time.  At the time of Lincoln’s election, the issue of slavery was one of the most contentious topics in American politics. Many slave owners were deeply opposed to Lincoln’s stance on slavery and his eventual goal of abolishing it. In response to his election, these owners decided to take a bold and unusual stand against the new president.  “As soon as we heard the news of Lincoln’s victory, we knew we had to do something to show our solidarity with our fellow slave owners,” wrote one plantation owner in a letter to his friend. “We decided that shaving our heads would be the most effective way to make a statement in support of our autonomy.”  The shaving of heads quickly spread across the South, with slave owners from all walks of life participating in the act. Some even went so far as to tattoo their heads with slogans and symbols supporting the continuation of slavery.  Historians have suggested that the slave owners’ solidarity shave may have been a way for them to cope with the fear and uncertainty they felt in the wake of Lincoln’s election. By taking a bold and public stand against the new president, they were able to assert their power and show that they would not go quietly into the night.  While the solidarity shave may seem like a strange and trivial act in hindsight, it is a fascinating reminder of the deep divisions that existed in American society during the lead-up to the Civil War. It also highlights the lengths to which people will go to express their beliefs and stand up for what they believe in, even if it means shaving their heads.
