The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, which created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for TV public-affairs programs, insisted upon “strict adherence to objectivity and balance in all programs or series of programs of a controversial nature.” But that’s not what we’ve gotten It's a grand deception made all the more clear in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election. One candidate, Donald Trump, has been constantly attacked for several months leading up to the election on the weekday PBS News Hour. A separate half-hour show, PBS News Weekend, often runs evergreen-type stories that aren’t political news. But this weekend’s episodes also attacked Trump on several social issue fronts without any conservative rebuttal. Anchor John Yang teased a story at top of Saturday's show that carried the online title "Why anti-transgender political ads are dominating the airwaves this election.“ Anchor John Yang: Then, why anti transgender ads are dominating the airwaves this election. Woman: The group of people that are watching these sporting events are young men. And the Republican Party is trying to tap into what they hope is some level of fear that they can draw up from that group of people. (Note: The unidentified “woman” in the transcript above is actually biological male Erin Reed, a transgender activist and a guest in the relevant segment.) Yang: If you`ve watched TV this month, especially sports like football or baseball, you`ve likely seen campaign ads supporting Donald Trump by attacking Kamala Harris over transgender issues. Laura Baron-Lopez looks at what’s behind them. Laura Barron-Lopez: Less than 1 percent of the U.S. population identifies as transgender. But this election year, Republicans have spent a considerable amount of money on ads demonizing transgender people…. And PBS has spent a considerable amount of tax money spreading LGBTQ propaganda this election cycle, as NewsBusters has documented. PBS aired clips from the anti-Harris ad. Male voiceover: Kamala supports taxpayer funded sex changes for prisoners….Kamala even supports letting biological men compete against our girls in their sports. Kamala is for they/them. President Trump is for you. Barron-Lopez didn’t dare directly call those charges falsehoods, because every accusation made in the ads was factual. Then she introduced Erin Reed, a biological man and radical transgender activist, as “an advocate and independent journalist covering LGBTQ issues” and noted that she had recently endorsed (shocker!) Vice President Kamala Harris – perhaps PBS’s pathetic idea of disclosure, to go along Reed being PBS’s objective and balanced source on a controversial news topic. Barron-Lopez: Anti-trans rhetoric is a regular part of Donald Trump stump speeches. He regularly lies about kids going to school and receiving gender-affirming surgeries before they return home. But now, in the final stretch, Republicans have been putting out increasing amount of ads that are anti-trans, making it essentially their closing argument. Help us understand the scope and the rhetoric in these ads. Reed said she had “tracked around $100 million in ads” by Republicans. When asked why “Trump and his allies are making this one of their main closing arguments,” Reed responded: Reed: ….this is a classic fear campaign….And so the purpose of a fear campaign is to distract you from issues that you normally care about by making you so afraid of a group of people, of somebody like me, for instance, that you`re willing to throw everything else away because you`re scared. At least PBS aired part of an actual GOP ad, although only to invite Reed to deflate its points. Barron-Lopez: These ads make pretty specific claims about surgery for transgender inmates and undocumented immigrants. Let’s take a listen. Male voiceover: Under liberal border czar Kamala Harris, illegal aliens are pouring into our country, including murderers, rapists, and even terrorists. Instead of paying for their crimes and receiving justice, Kamala will give criminal illegal aliens taxpayer-funded transgender surgeries. Barron-Lopez set up Reed to discredit the accusations, but Reed couldn’t. Barron-Lopez: Walk us through the facts about what’s actually happened with those populations. Reed: What the ad is actually talking about is medical care in the United States is a right by the 8th Amendment, you cannot deny medical care to prisoners…. When asked about the “stakes in this election for transgender Americans,” Reed concluded that even if Trump loses, Reed will still be spreading fear. Reed: Even if Trump doesn’t win and we get a Kamala Harris presidency, we have to contend with a nation that has been primed to hate people like me. Meanwhile, you have groups like the Senate Leadership Fund dropping extreme amounts of money in Senate races in Ohio, in Michigan, in Pennsylvania, and they're all focused on transgender people. Laura Baron-Lopez: The top issues, according to most polls right now, is the economy, abortion, immigration. So why do you think Trump and his allies are making this one of their main closing arguments? Erin Reed: It's important to note that some of the biggest benefactors of the Republican Party, some of the most influential organizations in the party we're talking, groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom, for instance, have made this their main issue. If you're running a campaign in a place like Pennsylvania or Ohio or Michigan at any level, and you want money in your campaign, targeting trans people is a really good way to do that. But as for Trump, I think that there's something different at play here. I think that this is a classic fear campaign. We've just got polling today showing that Harris is catching up on the economy and on other issues that Republicans tend to pull well in. And so the purpose of a fear campaign is to distract you from issues that you normally care about by making you so afraid of a group of people, of somebody like me, for instance, that you're willing to throw everything else away because you're scared. And I think that might be part of why this messaging campaign might be falling short. And under the law, a law that was in place during the Trump administration, if a doctor determines that an inmate needs medical care, then they get it. So these ads are actually focused on two instances where a transgender person received gender affirming care in prison, a surgery. And the amount of money spent on these particular cases is far less than the amount of advertising dollars that Trump is pouring into this issue. About 2 to 400 times more money is being used in political ads to make you afraid of two transgender inmates. So afraid that you're not going to care about the economy anymore, you're not going to care about abortion anymore. Laura Baron-Lopez: Erin, when you take a step back, what are the stakes in this election for transgender Americans? Erin Reed: It's been an especially difficult year in the last two or three years for trans people. Just two days ago in Odessa, Texas, they passed a $10,000 bounty on trans people found in the bathroom. I've been tracking anti LGBTQ legislation for years now. And it's not just the ads. The legislatures themselves are spending more time on this issue than anything else. This has been priority number one. And the trans people that live in these states, they constantly have to hear their humanity debated in public. They constantly have to worry about things that I think a lot of Americans take for granted, things like going to the bathroom, getting an updated driver's license, playing a school sport with your friends. But trans people right now are under a relentless assault by the Republican Party. These bills are passing in primarily Republican states. Even if Trump doesn't win and we get a Kamala Harris presidency, we have to contend with a nation that has been primed to hate people like me. Laura Baron-Lopez: Erin Reed, thank you for your time. Erin Reed: Thank you so much for having me.

CBS chief political news correspondent John Dickerson was tasked on Wednesday’s CBS Mornings with explaining how Donald Trump pulled off his Grover Cleveland impression the previous night. As Dickerson tells it, the country had a “nostalgia for a past that didn't exist” and wondered if sexism had anything to do with it. Co-host Gayle King began with a slightly different question. Instead of wondering why Trump succeeded, she wondered why Kamala Harris failed, “Why didn’t this work?” After Dickerson started giving the underwhelming reply of “he got more votes than she did,” King interrupted and tried again, “I know that, but, you know, we were saying this morning that some people believe that issues like the economy and immigration seem to transcend class and race. Is it that simple?”     Dickerson started out well enough, “Well, his appeal, Donald Trump's appeal transcended class and race, and that appeal was built around the economy. It was also built around, you know, disliking elites and experts and fancy pants people who tell you what to do with your life when you want more freedom, which is about the backlash against what happened with COVID which isn't directly necessarily directly related to the economy.” Then things went awry, “It’s also, I mean, we are still unpacking what exactly happened. It's also an incumbent president, Joe Biden, who people felt didn't hear their concerns about the economy. It's also nostalgia for a past that didn't exist. Donald Trump's favorability rating and approval rating now is better than it ever was when he was in office.” Just about every president has a higher approval rating after they leave office, but Trump was unique in that he ran again. Still, Dickerson continued lamenting: On the question of January 6th, which is important because it is a historic event where the leaders of the Republican Party said Donald Trump was responsible for this attack on the Capitol, you need two things: you need the people who are part of the institution to care enough about the institution and the Republicans who said Donald Trump was to blame for it, they changed their mind. So, they didn't care enough about the institution to worry about harming the institution.   Dickerson added that if Republican leaders won’t care about institutions, then voters can’t be expected to either, “And the voters think you and your institutions, they're not giving me lower prices, they're not creating a better pathway to opportunity in America. They're not fixing these challenges that I see in my life, the high cost of health care, the high cost of education. So, you and your institutions, that has nothing to do with me.” A few minutes later, Dickerson played the gender card while trying to insist he wasn’t, “I'm really hesitant to make snap judgments about exactly what happened at this moment, but the question of whether America is ready for a woman and how people process a woman in a position of leadership and power, that is absolutely a part of the mix.” Chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa discovered whatever remains of his former National Review self and replied, “We should remember that Vice President Kamala Harris was elected vice president of the United States in 2020. The country has shown an openness to having a woman serve as vice president of the United States. The Democratic Party nominated a woman in 2017 [sic] in Secretary Clinton, nominated a woman in 2024 with Kamala Harris. So, there's certainly an openness in America to female leadership. As Donald Trump cruised toward a dominant victory in the 2024 presidential election Tuesday night, Trump-hating MSNBC host Joy Reid exhibited a decided lack of joy and issued some whopper statements as things began slipping away for Democrat nominee Kamala Harris.For starters, Reid pouted and just couldn't comprehend Harris' electoral demise — and actually stated that the vice president ran a "perfect campaign."'This dumb woman doesn't accomplish anything. She doesn't create or build anything. She spreads delusions due to mental illness. NBC should fire her immediately.'"If this is an audition for managing a complex organization like the United States, Kamala Harris has passed the audition flawlessly," Reid stated. "This in many ways has been a perfect campaign — a brief, and she barely had any time to put it together. But just as a managerial matter, it's been brilliantly done."During the same MSNBC election night broadcast, Reid also threw shade at "white women" for failing to come through for Harris in the battleground state of North Carolina — a crushing loss for the Democrat nominee."Black voters came through for Kamala Harris; white women voters did not," Reid lamented. "That is what appears happened in that state." She went on to say that the Harris campaign wasn't able to "flip enough white women" even though women in North Carolina "lost their reproductive rights."Reid added, "That message obviously was not enough to get enough white women to vote for Vice President Harris, a fellow woman, this will be the second opportunity that white women in this country have had to change the way that they interact with the patriarchy."How are observers reacting?As you might guess, a number of X users who watched Reid's statements weren't the least bit sympathetic to the MSBNC host.In regard to Harris' "perfect campaign":"The irony is Joy Reid actually believes this to be true," one commenter said."It’s so bad, they have to gaslight themselves at this point," another user noted."If she ran a perfect campaign she would have won," another commenter reasoned."They are so out of touch with reality it’s remarkable to watch," another user stated. It became abundantly clear in the early hours Wednesday that Donald Trump's transition from America's 45th to 47th president was going to be difficult for those liberals fed in recent months a constant diet of alarmist rhetoric and fascist accusations by the Democratic press. Some Harris boosters have, however, managed to handle Trump's landslide electoral victory better than others or, at the very least, than the vice president. Just days after saying that "it's not a stretch to call Donald Trump a fascist" and that it would be "Armageddon" were the Republican to win, former "Shark Tank" star and Harris booster Mark Cuban went online to wish Trump well. "Congrats @realDonaldTrump," tweeted Cuban. "You won fair and square. Congrats to @elonmusk as well. #Godspeed." 'Mark Cuban, a really dumb guy, who thinks he's "hot stuff" but he's absolutely nothing.' While some commentators signaled appreciation for Cuban's eagerness to congratulate the man he previously accused of fascistic tendencies, others seized upon Cuban's tweet to mock the billionaire. A handful of critics suggested, for instance, that Cuban's recent suggestion on "The View" that Trump is never seen "around strong, intelligent women" helped mobilize women to vote for Kamala Harris' opponent. According to NBC News exit polls from 10 key states, 44% of American women voted for Republican candidates. The New York Post noted that reflects a two-point increase among women from the 2020 election. Trump responded at the time, "Mark Cuban, a really dumb guy, who thinks he's 'hot stuff' but he's absolutely nothing, is now out there saying that I don't surround myself with strong women. Actually, he is very wrong, I surround myself with the strongest of women - With the understanding that ALL women are great, whether strong or not strong." 'He won this one.' Libs of TikTok replied to Cuban's congratulatory message, "Thank you for your help with your closing comments about women!" Another user wrote, "Couldn't have done it without you." Unlike Cuban, Cenk Uygur, co-creator of "The Young Turks," was initially not so gracious in defeat. "Donald Trump is going to be the 47th president of the United States," Uygur said in a flop sweat on his show. "So buckle up. Brace for impact. We're going to have four years of anarchy and chaos. My prediction, which is not a bold one, is they're going to rob the place blind." "I'm not a big fan of the establishment, but they put some brakes in the car for Donald Trump, and he's a guy who needed brakes," continued Uygur. "Now there will be no brakes in the car. Steve Bannon is back. All the ghouls and goblins of the first administration that stayed through all of his corrupt and ridiculous demands are back. None of the people who had any sanity are back." Despite feverishly painting a picture of a nightmare situation under Trump, Uygur had a moment of clarity, stating, "We say that Donald Trump is unstable and unhinged, and I think that is true. But you know that old saying about how insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result? So how crazy are we if we just go back to the Joe Bidens, the Nancy Pelosis, the Chuck Schumers, the Kamala Harrises — the same — the Hillary Clintons — the same dumbass people who have been taking donor money, taking it and taking it, and delivering no results." Uygur later composed himself and tweeted, "Trump and MAGA - congratulations. I hate it and I think it's huge mistake. But you won fair and square. Trump tried to steal the last election, but he won this one. And that's also democracy. If the American people want him back in, that's the final word! I believe in democracy." Just after 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, the Kamala's Wins account on X tweeted, "BREAKING: The other team has more electoral votes." Unlike Cuban, Uygur, and the Harris booster account, neither the vice president nor her campaign have acknowledged Trump's landslide victory as of midmorning on Wednesday — despite having spent years complaining about Trump doing the same in 2020. Anti-oil activists allegedly vandalized the United States Embassy in London in the early hours of the morning after Donald Trump was elected president.The activists, posting a video around 5:25 a.m. Eastern Time, said they were inspired to desecrate the building because they are fighting against big governments that they believe are controlled by oil companies."US Embassy painted orange as we reject fascism," the group wrote on its social media pages.Quickly placing blame on Trump, the group called Just Stop Oil added climate change alarmism into its claim that the world is quickly spiraling into "fascism.""This morning the world wakes to find it has slipped further into fascism as well as climate breakdown. Trump's win puts the lives of ordinary people at risk, everywhere," the group began."The only real winner of today's election is the corporate power that controls the major parties in both the US and UK."The group went on to claim that Western political systems have been bought out by "big oil" despite the world facing the "biggest challenge of our time."That challenge being climate change, of course.'Democracy is hijacked by corporate interests and billionaires.'The group suggested acts of civil disobedience in order to minimize the effects of "climate breakdown" and the "social collapse that follows.""As long as democracy is hijacked by corporate interests and billionaires, it will fail to deliver the change people are crying out for. This will always leave the door open for fake populists like Trump to exploit the disaffection many feel," the statement continued.Just Stop Oil also called for "ordinary people" to organize and create change because no "political leaders" are going to save the planet. In fact, working-class people have countered the protesters with significant resistance in recent years.
