Salma Hayek Pinault Calls Like Water for Chocolate Timeless and “A Story of Changes”

Movies & TV Like Water for Chocolate Salma Hayek Pinault Calls Like Water for Chocolate Timeless and “A Story of Changes” The current adaptation offers a brand new look at a beloved classic By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on November 1, 2024 Credit: HBO Comment 0 Share New Share Credit: HBO The latest adaptation of Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate will premiere in just a few days on Max. The Spanish-language limited series isn’t the first adaptation of Esquivel’s book, of course—in 1992, director Alfonso Arau helmed a movie adaptation that was both critically and commercially successful. It’s been thirty-two years since that film, and the upcoming series is an adaptation of the book for a new generation. “Laura Esquivel gave us a classic,” executive producer Salma Hayek Pinault said in a Zoom press conference Reactor attended [Note: all quotes were in Spanish and translated into English]. “It will never be out of fashion because it always touches us.” While the story is timeless, it also takes place at a specific time in Mexican history—the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century—something the limited series integrates into the characters’ development over several episodes. And at its heart, as Hayek Pinault also explained at the press conference, the book “is a story of changes.” She continued, “This means political changes within the country, but also changes in the home, and how women have always fought to have a voice or to control their fate… through this story, you can see that [women during the Revolution] had to defend their homes, to protect their families, to see how to feed their own families, and we forget women’s participation in all the political conflicts of different countries.” If you’re eager to see how the series adaptation incorporates these themes, I’ve got good news for you: Like Water for Chocolate premieres on Max on November 3, 2024, with additional episodes dropping subsequent Sundays.[end-mark] The post Salma Hayek Pinault Calls <i>Like Water for Chocolate</i> Timeless and “A Story of Changes” appeared first on Reactor.

Civil Liberties Groups Push DOJ to Probe UK-US Collusion in Online Censorship

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. America First Legal (AFL) has announced that it has filed a formal complaint, based on new evidence, urging an investigation into the activities of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). This UK-based group has been accused of direct involvement in online censorship, including in the US, notably in the affair around the “naming and shaming” of the supposed Covid “Disinformation Dozen” – which is why the AFL’s complaint has now been submitted to the US Department of Justice (DOJ). The key question that AFL wants to be answered is whether those behind CCDH should be treated as “agents of a foreign principal” who took on the role of stifling free speech in the US. Such a designation of the group, if confirmed, would be in line with the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). We obtained a copy of the request for you here. AFL notes that in the UK, CCDH “shares an address with Labour Together, a UK Labour Party-associated think tank that met with Kamala Harris’s campaign at the DNC in Chicago.” Those AFL wants investigated include CCDH CEO Imran Ahmed, while a press release names other key people as Chair of the CCDH Board Simon Clark, CCDH’s former Head of Policy Eva Hartshorn-Sanders, board member of CCDH US and UK Thomas Conrad Brookes (US citizen who lives in Belgium), CCDH US Board members Kristy Jean McNeill, Aleen Keshishian, Zack Morgenroth, and CCDH UK Board member Damian Collins. Simon Clark is described as colluding to censor online speech with the US government as a former resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Lab (part of Election Integrity Partnership (EIP) and Virality Project). The Atlantic Council has already been sued by AFL in a federal class action alleging “conspiracy with the federal government to censor speech.” Eva Hartshorn-Sanders, meanwhile, is said to have “advocated for policies given to her by the CCDH UK and the UK Labour Party.” Aleen Keshishian is the founder and CEO of Lighthouse Management + Media, which represents a number of Hollywood celebrities, AFL said. The request for a DOJ investigation cites CCDH’s description of its activities as being in the service of protecting human and civil liberties on the internet – but also, the critics blasting it as engaged in “brazen smearing, attacking of dissenting views, deplatforming, censoring” dissenting voices. AFL at the same time states that although CCDH is registered in the UK as a non-profit, there is in fact “no material separation between it and the original entity of the same name established in the United Kingdom.” “Our investigation has uncovered shocking details about a foreign organization’s influence over the Biden-Harris Administration and numerous state governments,” commented AFL Legal Executive Director Gene Hamilton. According to him, this was “not just any influence – their aim and stated goals appear to be to stop Americans from exercising a fundamental right guaranteed against governmental interference by the First Amendment.” “And for nearly four years, the Biden-Harris DOJ appears to have looked the other way. The Biden-Harris DOJ is now on notice. The time to investigate is now,” Hamilton said. If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Ireland’s Online “Hate Crime” Law Passes, Sparks Major Future Free Speech Concerns

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. In Ireland, the controversial Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offenses) Act 2024 has become law. President Michael Higgins on Tuesday signed the bill – as Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman welcomed the development, and vowed that if still in power after the November election, this party would “certainly” work to get even more “hate speech legislation” adopted. This remark has to do with a temporary removal of some of the current bill’s controversial provisions, the implication being that those might make a comeback in some “new hate speech” bill. The parts removed concern some incitement to violence and hatred and hate speech provisions; however, those on hate crime have been left in the text. Prior to being signed into law, the amended Criminal Justice Act 2024 – known as the “Hate Crime Bill” – cleared the country’s parliament in a 78-50 vote earlier in the month, despite strong criticism both from politicians and free speech groups. The general argument used by the law’s opponents is that it is criminalizing free speech in a number of ways, with the most ardent critics seeing the legislation as moving Ireland closer to oppression and the rule of tyranny. One of the controversial parts of the law revolves around the definition of gender, which is both extensive and expansive: “(…) the gender of a person or the gender which a person expresses as the person’s preferred gender or with which the person identifies and includes transgender and a gender other than those of male and female.” And if the chosen gender – such as it is defined here, is found to be the reason for “hatred” expressed against someone – then from now on, this is to be treated as an aggravating factor, bringing with it a greater sentence than would have been the case had the “protected characteristics” not played a role in the consideration of an offense. Speaking of protected characteristics, the act defines them as religion – including “absence of religious belief” – race, ethnicity, gender (as defined), sexual orientation, disability, and also, “references to sex characteristics shall be construed as references to the physical and biological features of a person relating to sex.” During the debate in parliament, the bill’s sponsors made sure to note that this legislation – in the way it criminalizes certain behaviors – is the first of its kind in Europe. Gab Faces Off Against Germany’s Censorship Push, US DOJ Silent

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Free speech social network Gab continues to be under fire in Germany, as the government there is pressing for legal proceedings against the US company refusing to comply with censorship demands – i.e., pay fines, which has prompted German authorities to now go to court. In an email, Gab.com CEO Andrew Torba announced this, and at the same time accused the Biden-Harris administration of being “complicit in this attack on our rights.” Torba’s take on the situation is that an American company is coming under “an unprecedented attack” regarding the right to freedom of speech, as guaranteed by the US. And – only to find that the US government, specifically the current Department of Justice (DOJ), is consistently ignoring these developments, and Gab’s requests for assistance. On October 25, Gab received an email from the DOJ that said this department was “simply” forwarding (German) documents and was “not otherwise involved (or) taking a position on the proceedings in Germany.” “You should review these documents carefully for instructions and deadlines,” the DOJ email said, thus washing its hands of the matter, instructing Gab to contact the German court or consulate directly, “if you have any questions.” But if not for Gab, another kind of “assistance” seems more likely to succeed: namely, the controversy includes Germany turning to the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) to make sure US companies comply with its censorship rules and demands. Gab, on the other hand, chose to adhere to the rules of its domicile, above all the First Amendment free speech protections, and Torba frames the situation in interesting terms: “European censorship codes are the very reason the First Amendment exists.” This succinctly exposes the vastly different approaches to speech that exist in Europe, where speech is criminalized, and the US, which has long since taken a very different route. As to how all this refers to and affects Gab, Torba quotes his legal team’s response to a letter where the German authorities seek to use the principle of nation-state exception – one that, Gab’s lawyers say, does not apply under the US Constitution. The response further states that the platform is a lawful business that in fact has no presence outside the US, and can therefore not have communications happening on it interfered with or restricted, as per the guarantees offered by the country’s Constitution (First Amendment). And should Germany decide to pursue the legal case, Gab is “prepared to vindicate its rights in a US court if it comes to that,” the letter said. Fastest Fruit And Nut Bearing Trees

Some fruit and nut trees can take anywhere from 1 to 7 years before they begin to produce any fruits and some nuts can take even longer. I think it’s best to purchase a sapling that’s already a few years old from a trusted seller to take a little time off of the waiting, instead of planting them from seeds. Fruit and Nut Trees: Which Bear Fruit and Nuts the FASTEST? It can seem like forever before you get your first tiny yield but it’s worth the time and investment in order to have fresh fruit available on your homestead. One must also consider factors like the environment, climate, soil conditions, and growing zones when looking into planting fruit and nut trees. Some trees can be grown in a greenhouse if the environment is right and the greenhouse large enough. There are also several dwarf varieties of trees for those of you with limited space. Imagine little peaches or lemons growing in a pot right on the deck! Fastest Growing Fruit Trees Figs: A fig tree has the potential to bear fruit within 1-4 years but some varieties can take up to 7 years before there’s anything to harvest. Figs grow well unprotected in zones 8-10 but there are some cold-hardy species that can grow in zones 5-10. A fig tree can get to be about 20-feet tall and 20-feet wide. They can be pruned in order to keep them smaller. Most varieties of the fig trees are self-fertile and do not require a pollinator but there is a species in California that is grown specifically for the fig newton snack cookies that do need a pollinator in order to fruit. Citrus Trees: Oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits all fit this list. There are several varieties of citrus trees that will bear fruit within 1-4 years. They grow in zones seven and up with some cold-hardy varieties available in zone 6. Citrus trees are self-fertile so they do not require a mate for cross-pollination. On average citrus trees can grow 18 to 22-feet and the dwarf varieties reach 8-11. Banana: Banana trees only take 3-5 years before they begin bearing fruit. They grow in zones 8 and up while some cold hard varieties can be grown as low as zone 6. Two cold-hardy varieties that do well are the Basjoo and Musa. On average they reach 18-feet tall with the dwarf measuring only 10-feet tall. Some varieties require a pollinator while others are self-fertile. Mulberry: Mulberry trees take 3-5 years to fruit. This tree grows well in zones 5-9. The white mulberry tree can reach heights of 80-feet tall and the red mulberry that grows further south can reach up to 70-feet high. That’s the tallest they can grow but typically they can reach 20 to 35-feet tall. There are self-pollinating and trees that require pollinators. Olive: Olive trees will begin producing within 3-5 years. They are subtropical so they prefer zones 10 and 11 but some cold-hardy varieties can be grown as low as zone 8. Olive trees require two or more trees in order to cross-pollinate in order to bear fruit. They rarely reach over 15-feet tall. Pomegranate: Pomegranates only take 3-5 years before they fruit. They are self-pollinating so you only need one. The cold-hardy varieties can be grown in zones 7 and up. The pomegranate tree can reach about 8-feet tall and there is a dwarf variety that is only 3-4 feet tall. Peaches, Nectarines, Apples: All of these trees can begin producing fruits within 3-6 years. They fare well in zones 4-8 but apples really love zones 6 and 7. They can grow 25-35 feet tall but with proper trimming, they can stay smaller than that. Fruits like sweet cherries, pears, persimmons, and plums can take up to 8 years to fruit if not longer. Of course, as with anything, it is possible that they bear fruit earlier. If you are in search of survival property look for fruit and nut trees because it can take years before you have anything to survive off of. Fastest Nut Bearing Trees Just as with the fruit trees, there are varieties of each that are self-pollinating and other varieties that require a pollinator. When it comes to nut trees I think it’s a good idea to plant more than one whether they are self-fertile or not. Nuts can be difficult to grow and already take a while so it’s best to plant more than one. Butternut: The butternut is a variety of walnut. It can take anywhere from 3-5 years before they produce any nuts. They grow well in zones 3-7. Butternut trees can reach heights of 40 to 60-feet tall. Almonds: An almond tree needs 3-6 years before it bears any nuts. They grow well in zones 5-9 and can reach heights of 13 to over 30-feet tall. Almonds seem to get sweeter the older the tree gets. Chestnut & Heartnut: The chestnut tree can take 4-7 years before it produces any nuts and thrives in zones 4-8. The heartnut takes 4-7 years, some varieties can take longer, before they fruit. The heartnut grows in zone 6. A chestnut tree can grow between 80 to 100-feet tall and the heartnut can reach up to 30-feet. A majority of the other nut trees can take anywhere from 5-12 years before they offer anything to harvest. Fast Growing Fruit and Nut Trees shows us how to get fruit on the first year: When it comes to self-sufficiency and self-reliance it’s important to grow your own foods, as much of it as you can at least. It takes patience waiting for fruit and nut trees to bear a decent bounty. Do you know of any quick to grow fruit trees? Let us know in the comments. Happy Growing! MRC Tested YouTube on Burying Rogan-Trump Interview. Here’s What We Found

Google-owned YouTube is still finding new ways to interfere in the 2024 presidential election, suppressing a three-hour Rogan interview of Trump. Scarcely more than a week before the 2024 presidential election, YouTube stymied users’ efforts to search for and find the recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast featuring former President and GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. This is despite the fact that the interview was one of the most anticipated episodes of the most popular Spotify podcast in the U.S. and that the episode reportedly saw more than 28 million views in just the first two days it was available. MRC tested YouTube’s search function after the platform supposedly fixed the problem and found that Google-owned YouTube is still suppressing Rogan’s interview with Trump. Shortly after the Rogan-Trump interview aired, users reported that when searching YouTube with standard search terms like “Joe Rogan Trump,” the episode did not appear at the top of search results. In some cases the interview did not appear even on the entire first page of results. Instead, YouTube served up clips and commentaries about the episode as well as media reports about it including from leftist outlets such as MSNBC, The Hill and others. MRC Free Speech America found that although YouTube has corrected the results for some of these search terms there are still some reasonable search terms that should return a link to the wildly popular episode but don’t. For example, at the time of publication, a search for “donald trump rogan” returns the Rogan interview with Sen. J.D. Vance at the top of the results and the Trump interview as the fifth result. A search for “trump rogan” is showing the Vance interview as the fourth result and users must scroll down below the “People also watched” section to find the Trump interview.  MRC Free Speech America pointed out the continued suppression of the episode under these other common search terms to YouTube when requesting comment for this story and did not receive a response. Rogan addressed the censorship in a subsequent podcast, sarcastically claiming that he is “sure it was a mistake.” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) addressed the censorship in a letter to YouTube parent company Alphabet in which he demanded answers. The MRC Free Speech America CensorTrack database contains 534 cases of YouTube censorship collected since March of 2020.  YouTube failed to respond to MRC Free Speech America’s request for a comment by the time of publication.  Conservatives are under attack. Trump campaign complaint accuses Washington Post of 'illegal in-kind' contributions to Harris campaign

The Trump-Vance campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Committee alleging that the Washington Post had given the Harris-Walz campaign numerous illegal "in-kind" contributions through its coverage. The filing noted that the Washington Post had publicly declined to endorse a presidential candidate but went on to accuse the outlet of "aggressively" boosting its paid advertising campaign to increase the reach of its articles related to the election. It was a 'reasonable inference' that the Harris team had 'communicated' strategy to the Post. The complaint relied on independent reporting showing the Post had boosted articles that were "neutral" with their coverage of the Harris campaign but were far more negative when covering the Trump campaign. “To wit, one of the promoted articles highlighted how the Harris digital team was pushing content on social media claiming people were leaving President Trump’s rallies early,” wrote Gary Lawkowski, an attorney for the Trump campaign. “A month later, The Washington Post published an article, which was reportedly boosted by The Post, on the same topic, with a similar editorial framing," the complaint said. He goes on to say that it was a "reasonable inference" that the Harris team had "communicated" strategy to the Post and that it was boosting articles that defend and support a narrative to favor the Democrat narrative. "The Commission should find reason to believe a violation has occurred and passes an appropriate penalty for this infusion of dark money into the 2024 campaign," the complaint said. The complaint comes on the same day that talk radio show host Hugh Hewitt quit as a contributor to the Washington Post after blowing up on a livestream feed over the mischaracterizations by others at the Post about election irregularities. "This is the most unfair election ad I've ever been a part of. You guys are working. That's fine," said Hewitt as he took off his headset. "I'm done!" Many in the media and on the left went into full meltdown mode when the Washington Post refused to endorse a presidential candidate. Like Blaze News? Tucker Carlson gives hilarious response to NYT asking about his necktie

Tucker Carlson revealed on X his tongue-in-cheek response to a New York Times reporter asking him if the gold and black tie he wore during his speech at the Trump rally in Madison Square Garden was to show subtle support for the Proud Boys.Adam Satariano, a technology reporter based in London, asked Carlson if he wore the tie on purpose because allegedly the Proud Boys believe he was showing support for the group, since they use those same colors in their branding. 'I hope you're filled with guilt and self-loathing for sending me a text like this.'"Is this the case? At the rally at Madison Square Garden in New York, was Mr. Carlson's choice of wearing black and gold a sign of support for the Proud Boys?" Satariano asked, giving a deadline to respond of Friday at 2 p.m. ET."I just received the inquiry you sent about the tie I wore at Donald Trump's rally. ... Yes, that is an official Proud Boys necktie. I received it at my Proud Boys initiation ceremony several years ago, after swearing a blood oath to the global fascist revolution and the sacred principles of Q Anon," Carlson replied."As you can imagine, I wouldn't normally admit this. The rules of secret societies being what they are, anything related to dress code is supposed to be confidential. But in this case, I've been outfoxed by your relentless shoe-leather journalism. Darn you, New York Times. You win again," Carlson concluded. Carlson shared his response to Satariano with the caption, "The New York Times knows a Proud Boys necktie when they see one."Carlson has recently been on the offensive against reporters who request comment about ridiculous topics. He posted his exchange with a different New York Times reporter who asked him about statements regarding the upcoming election that far-left Media Matters has called "misinformation.""This is why you got into journalism? It's shameful. I hope you're filled with guilt and self-loathing for sending me a text like this," Carlson told Nico Grant. When Grant pressed Carlson on the topic, Carlson replied, "Why would I participate in your attempt to smear me? No thanks. But I do hope you'll quote what I wrote above and also note that I told you to f*** off, which I am now doing. Thanks."The New York Times did not respond to Blaze News' request for comment.Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox.
