Barack Obama notoriously let the mask slip in April 2008. Of working-class voters in old industrial towns, the Democratic candidate for president said, “They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” Obama initially stood by his comments, but then said he would “deeply regret” the comments if any Americans were offended. Hillary Clinton, campaigning against Obama at the time in the Democratic primaries, condemned his remarks as “demeaning,” “elitist,” and “out of touch.” Yet in 2016, she notoriously said: “You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of [then-presidential candidate Donald] Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables.” She described this “basket” as “the racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic—you name it.” So, when President Joe Biden compared Trump supporters to “garbage” on Tuesday, he was following in a long and ignominious line of Democrats who let their disgust with their fellow Americans seep through. I don’t know who he is.”) “They’re good, decent honorable people,” Biden said of Puerto Ricans in his remarks Tuesday about Trump. “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of these people is unconscionable and it’s un-American.” Biden later released a statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, stating that he “referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage.” “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. Where Does This Come From? These Democrats are echoing a broader trend on the Left: The elites think they know how other Americans ought to live. Americans who make more than $150,000 a year, live in densely populated areas, and have postgraduate degrees are overwhelmingly liberal. In a Napolitan Institute survey, Scott Rasmussen’s RMG Research surveyed a group that Rasmussen describes as the elite 1%, contrasting them with Main Street Americans who don’t fit any of these three criteria. The elites give Biden an 82% approval rating, compared to his 40% average approval from the rest of Americans. Rasmussen’s polling found that Americans in the elite 1% are far more likely to support transgender policy, to back government crackdowns on disinformation, to trust government agencies over voters and elected representatives, and to favor climate regulations. A vast majority (77%) of the elite 1% support rationing the private use of gas, meat, and electricity, while 63% of voters oppose such rationing, Rasmussen found. Elites favor banning gas-powered cars (72%), gas stoves (69%), and private air conditioning (53%), while most voters heavily oppose such measures. RMG Research also surveyed 500 federal government managers, finding that their views largely align with the elite 1%. The survey asked respondents: “Does the United States provide too much individual freedom, too much government control, or is the balance about right?” Most Main Street Americans (62%) said the federal government has somewhat too much control (33%) or far too much control (29%), while 18% said America has about the right balance. Only 13% said Americans have far too much freedom (4%) or somewhat too much freedom (9%). Meanwhile, nearly half of the elite 1% (47%) said Americans have far too much freedom (28%) or somewhat too much freedom (19%). Most federal government managers (53%) also said Americans had far too much freedom (17%) or somewhat too much freedom (34%). Only 21% of the elites said the government has too much control, while 31% of federal government managers agreed. Thirty-nine percent of federal government managers said it would be better for America if only those with college degrees were allowed to vote, and 51% of the elite 1% agreed. Only 15% of all voters said America would be better if only college graduates could vote. Shockingly, 46% of federal government managers said parents have too much control, while 39% of elites agreed, compared to 17% of all voters. Fifty-four percent of federal government managers said that if given a choice between following their own research and issuing a regulation of which the voters disapprove, they should issue the regulation, rather than listening to the voters (35%). America has a vast worldview divide between these left-leaning elites and the vast majority of Americans, who the elites seem to consider their natural inferiors. The Apparatus of Demonization Some organizations effectively exist to further this ideological divide. Take the Southern Poverty Law Center, for example. The SPLC gained its reputation by suing Ku Klux Klan groups into bankruptcy, and it weaponized that reputation to demonize its ideological and political opponents. Today, it maintains a “hate map” plotting mainstream conservative and Christian organizations alongside Klan chapters, suggesting that a similar form of hatred drives both. Amid a racial discrimination and sexual harassment scandal that dogged the SPLC in 2019, a former employee called the organization’s hate accusations a “highly profitable scam.” As I explain in my book “Making Hate Pay: The Corruption of the Southern Poverty Law Center,” it works like this: The SPLC supports a cause or policy (transgender orthodoxy, for example). It brands organizations that oppose that policy (Alliance Defending Freedom, Moms for Liberty, the medical organization Do No Harm) as “hate groups” or “antigovernment extremist groups,” putting them on a map with the Klan. This both delegitimizes the SPLC’s opponents and scares donors into ponying up cash. Conservatives see through the charade, but the Biden-Harris administration apparently hasn’t. In fact, SPLC leaders and staff have gone to the White House at least 18 times under the Biden-Harris administration, and Biden nominated an SPLC lawyer to a top federal judgeship. The SPLC’s worldview aligns with the elites’ worldview, which aligns with the Biden-Harris administration’s policy. That’s why so much of the Left continues to cite the Southern Poverty Law Center even though conservatives know it has been thoroughly discredited. As the Left increasingly dominates much of the commanding heights of American culture, conservatives are striving to set up alternative institutions. The new political landscape often breaks down along the lines of class and ideology. The Left has the money and power, and the Right has the values that helped make America what it is today. Obama, Clinton, and Biden wouldn’t explicitly say that they consider conservatives to be evil. When the mask slips, however, the elites’ disdain for everyday Americans shines through. While ABC’s Good Morning America was off denying reality Wednesday that President Biden’s comment referring to Trump “supporters” as “garbage,” CBS Mornings and NBC’s Today were pained to admit he’s “undermin[ing]” and “drawing attention away from Kamala Harris’s closing message” by “courting controversy” with an “unforced error.” CBS Mornings co-host Tony Dokoupil was on it in the Eye Opener: See, news media, it's not that hard.@CBSMornings co-host @TonyDokoupil: "President Biden makes comments about Trump supporters, calling them 'garbage' and drawing attention away from Kamala Harris's closing message." pic.twitter.com/gsI49ZXwZI — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) October 30, 2024 After co-host Nate Burleson cued her up by lamenting “Biden said something that could undermine her message,” chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes first cheered the Harris rally’s “estimated 75,000 people crowded onto the Ellipse and down the National Mall...as Harris sought to draw a sharp contrast in these closing days between her vision and Donald Trump’s.” “Standing before a sea of supporters, Vice President Kamala Harris painted a dark picture of what a second Trump term would look like,” she added. Cordes continued to relitigate the Harris campaign as based on January 6, but eventually made the pivot to Biden (click “expand”):     CORDES: But even as she was stressing unity — HARRIS: I pledge to be a president for all Americans. CORDES: — President Biden was courting controversy with his reaction to this insulting comment made by a comedian at Trump’s Sunday rally. TOM HINCHCLIFFE: I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. Yes, I think it’s called Puerto Rico. CORDES: Speaking virtually to Latino voters, Biden said this: PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: Just the other day a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage. Well, let me tell you something, I don’t — I don’t know the Puerto Rican that I know, or Puerto Rico where I’m — in my home state of Delaware. They’re good, decent, honorable people. The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters, his — his — his demonization is seen as unconscionable, and it’s un-American. CORDES: President Biden later tweeted to clarify that he was not talking about all Trump supporters as garbage, that he was only referring to the comedian’s rhetoric as garbage. Adding, “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say.” But this was certainly not the distraction the Harris campaign needed as she heads into this very carefully orchestrated final stretch of the campaign[.] Dokoupil reacted with a quip of his own: “No, [Democrats] don’t want to be in the realm of ‘meant to say.’” Tossing to correspondent Caitlin Huey-Burns, Dokoupil added “[f]ormer President Donald Trump and other Republicans were, of course, quick to jump on those comments from President Biden as Trump’s campaign sought to pivot away from the controversy over the racist remarks at his mega rally on Sunday in New York.” Huey-Burns then shared that, unsurprisingly, “[t]he Trump campaign is already capitalizing and fundraising off those comments from President Biden, hoping to shift the focus from their own controversy.” “The former President has yet to condemn the racist remarks by a comedian at his Madison Square Garden rally and called the event a lovefest,” she said at one point. CBS Mornings Plus co-host Adriana Diaz admitted this was the White House “in total damage control,” especially considering the discussion is “whether there was an apostrophe-S, his supporter’s garbage that it was, you know, or supporters plural as garbage.” Longtime CBS analyst/correspondent/host John Dickerson provided the counter to the previous coverage, implying this shouldn’t matter and that Republicans let Biden off the hook because they shouldn’t “get in an insult comparing contest.” Dokoupil countered it’s debatable whether Hinchcliffe’s comments matter either, but Dickerson chose to pivot back to more implicit talk (click “expand”): CBS's John Dickerson says "it bears repeating" to voters that they remember January 6, Trump being a "fascist," and Trump wanting to jail people. In turn, "gaffes at the end of a campaign" don't matter as much as they would in a normal election. pic.twitter.com/DmRpuhauSo — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) October 30, 2024 Over on NBC, co-host Savannah Guthrie said in a tease that Biden had “caus[ed] new drama as [Harris] spoke,” sending the administration into “damage control, even releasing a revised transcript, but Trump and Republicans pounce[.]” Setting up chief White House correspondent Peter Alexander, Guthrie described Biden’s smear of tens of millions of Americans as a comment “making headlines.” Alexander, like CBS’s Cordes, first gave Harris some love by gushing over her crowd size then lamented that Biden’s “unforced error...is threatening to undercut part of her message.” Once he gave viewers a few pieces of kibble from Harris’s speech, Alexander said Biden “potentially hand[ed] her opponent fresh fodder” and fretted Trump was “quick to pounce, responding mid-rally, comparing the comments to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 denounceable of Trump’s supporters as deplorable.” Alexander continued on with the White House’s apostrophe excuse and referenced Biden’s X post, eventually ending back with Guthrie and remarking “top Democrats — they are distancing themselves” from Biden. Alexander stood out as the lone individual on any of the “Big Three” to note this was the second time in as many weeks Biden drew bad headlines for the Democrats with his declaration Trump needed to be locked up. In the second hour, Trump campaign correspondent Garrett Haake aired his own dismay (click “expand”): HAAKE: With less than a week to go, last night suitably, a major moment in this campaign. Kamala Harris holding that massive rally on the Ellipse. Quite possibly the biggest event for either candidate all campaign long in which she laid out her closing argument and vowed to be a president for all Americans and offering a chance to turn the page to a new generation of leadership. But that message undercut at least in part by the current President who, on a zoom call with a Latino group, said this about that racist joke from the comedian at Trump’s rally on Sunday. BIDEN: The only garbage I see floating out there are his supporters — his — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and it’s un-American. HAAKE: The President later posting on social media that he was referring to the rhetoric of the comedian as garbage, not talking about Trump supporters. That did not stop Donald Trump from seizing on that comment mid-rally here in Pennsylvania, arguing that if Biden thinks his supporters are garbage, what is that saying about essentially half the country? Tech billionaire Elon Musk said his company was looking into claims that the Harris-Walz presidential campaign was trying to manipulate community notes on X in order to push more favorable narratives.Musk reposted the accusations on X, the platform he owns, from an account with screenshots from a report in the Federalist documenting the alleged efforts from organizers of the Harris campaign on other platforms, including Discord and Reach. The report showed how paid Harris staffers on the Harris Discord were writing their own community notes and calling on volunteers to vote them positively in order to spread their propaganda. Community notes were added to Twitter after Musk purchased the platform in order to allow crowdsourcing to determine the truthfulness or falsity of viral claims. Sometimes the community votes up contradictory information and data to avoid misinformation from gaining traction without pushback. The report however, found that X had filtered out bad actors enough that one Harris-Walz Discord user lamented that they were blocked from effectively pushing their propaganda as much as they desired: It's because the [community notes] system is looking for notes that get people who normally disagree with each other to agree the note is worthwhile. So a [community note] needs people who normally believe misinformation to cross over and agree that, in fact, this case is misinformation.The report noted that the efforts were a "gross violation" of the Terms of Service on X prohibiting the artificial amplification of information.
