The Medicinal Value of Chaga Mushrooms as a Nutraceutical for Good Health

In an updated review of the medicinal value of the Siberian native fungus called chaga, the authors underscore the almost unbelievable value of this humble organism for functional medicine. Their review, synthesizing old and brand new work on chaga, describes its anticancer, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulating properties as “remarkable.” As World at Large […] The post The Medicinal Value of Chaga Mushrooms as a Nutraceutical for Good Health appeared first on Good News Network.

Is Your Cat a Stalker? Olga’s Creepy Ways

Hi, I’m Christopher! Read my introduction to learn more about me and my silly Russian Blue cat, Olga. Cats keep us entertained, and most cat owners are happy to share their homes with miniature, slightly psychotic predators. They’re friendlier and more intelligent than some give them credit for, but their behavior can get them into trouble and lead to rehoming or euthanization. Aggression and inappropriate elimination are the most common reasons for booting a cat out of the house and sending them to a shelter, and while stalking may not be a justifiable reason, it affects how some people perceive felines. Feline Stalking Stalking isn’t an admirable quality in humans, but it’s part of a cat’s DNA and unlikely to be diminished by selective breeding. A sneak attack by a cat hiding in the dark may cause your heart to skip a beat or make you scream, and I’m sure some unethical owners have reacted violently. Unlike most cat parents, I’m proud of my cat when she takes me by surprise and impressed by her stealth. I get irritated when she forgets to retract her claws before attacking my legs, but most of the time, she only uses her pads after a sneak attack. I’m her favorite target since she can’t go outside and only hunts insects in the summer. Please turn off the lights. I’m ready to stalk you. Olga’s Creepy Joy The family of mockingbirds in my yard raiding my blueberry bushes are lucky Olga has to watch them from a windowsill and cannot engage in predatory stalking. It’s not only instinctual for cats to stalk and attack their owners but also entertaining. Olga is happiest when she jumps in front of me, hunches up her back, and attacks my calves with both paws. She likes to be chased around the house and waits until my head is turned and I’m walking in the opposite direction to attack. Unlike the felines that surprise people in movies, Olga looks more energized than frightened. Hollywood’s Feline Stalkers Frightened cats often leap out and shriek when they scare people in horror films. It usually occurs when a character looks for a killer or creature in a creepy setting, like an abandoned warehouse, and jumps back when they find a cat instead. In Alien, Jonesy (the cat) surprises Brett when he walks around the creepiest area of the ship and hisses to warn him that he’s about to be devoured by the extraterrestrial behind him. Since she’s not very vocal or protective, Olga would run before warning me of danger and wouldn’t use her stalking skills if frightened. I’m not as crazy as I look, Christopher. Young Olga’s Techniques If she’s scared, she hides under a couch and doesn’t move, but stalking is a game to her. She has to be in a good mood, but when she was a kitten, she was more aggressive and craftier. She surprised and attacked me when I took a shower, turned off the light to go to bed, and whenever I was half asleep in the recliner. When the recliner was in the upright position, she would claw her way up the back and hit me in the head. Olga’s not as creative with her stalking moves today, but she still attacks me when she’s hiding in the dark. This article is a part of Christopher and Olga's series. Tracking Nessie With All the Cool Tools: Expedition X Hunts the Loch Ness Monster

Column SFF Bestiary Tracking Nessie With All the Cool Tools: Expedition X Hunts the Loch Ness Monster It seems there’s new evidence, and Nessie hunters are excited… By Judith Tarr | Published on October 21, 2024 Credit: Discovery Channel Comment 0 Share New Share Credit: Discovery Channel While I was working my through Peter Costello’s In Search of Lake Monsters, I happened across the new season of Expedition X, which just dropped. Lo and behold, episode 3 explores “What Lurks in Loch Ness.” Josh Gates intones, “Is the most iconic monster of them all about to be discovered?” And we’re off on a monster hunt. It seems there’s new evidence, and Nessie hunters are excited. It’s a series of photos taken by amateur photographer Chie Kelly from the Dores Inn in Inverness in 2018, but she kept them to herself until 2023 for fear of ridicule (which is a frequent explanation for delays in releasing paranormal or controversial evidence). Nessie expert Steven Feltham professed himself thrilled, saying it’s some of the best evidence that’s ever been found. But there’s more! Which the episode will get to in a minute. To start with, Gates meets with his team in New York. Phil and Heather—wait. Oh yes. Jess has left the show. Now we have third-generation paranormal researcher and true believer Heather. Her energy is pretty similar and she bounces off Phil in much the same way. Phil continues to be his skeptical scientific self, but he’s excited by this assignment, too. He gets to investigate the mother of all lake monsters, and he gets to use the cool tools. The photos are extremely interesting, because they’re classic Nessie. For once we can see in detail what numerous witnesses have described. Bubbling water, dark humps, no head or tail showing. One shot looks like a pair of gleaming silver snakelike coils. They validate decades of sightings, though what they are is the question. We get a quick summary of the history of sightings. A key point, which Costello also makes, is that in 1933 a road went through by the loch, and that’s when the sightings—and the photos and videos—started. There are legends all the way back to St. Columba, but the point at which it all went viral was the arrival of the road. One of Phil’s suggestions is that the monster is actually a fish. Specifically, a Wels catfish. These fish are huge, they’re about the right color and shape, and they have barbels on their faces, which might explain the mane or the horns of the Nessie sightings. Feltham thinks that’s a possibility, too. It was introduced to the lake in the nineteenth century as a sport fish, so it’s not entirely improbable. Phil and Heather do their due diligence, speaking to witnesses including Feltham, and trying to debunk the Kelly photos. Phil suspects it may have been a diver throwing off bubbles, though there was no boat in sight for the diver to have been working from. He stations Heather on shore with a camera similar to Kelly’s, but the results don’t duplicate hers. The locals not only detail their sightings (some of which have had multiple witnesses). They also mention that there are caves under the loch, which might provide hiding places for the cryptid and—this is a crucial point—offer breeding and nursery spaces for a colony. Phil is keen to investigate these. Meanwhile, they pull out the cool tools, including an underwater camera capable of recording at great depths, and a hydrophone to capture sounds—because another thing witnesses have recorded are weird, whale-like noises in the loch. Feltham is even more excited about his sonar discovery than Kelly’s photos. That shows something down at the bottom of the loch, which is basically shaped like a bathtub with steep sides. Way down there, he’s recorded something about thirty feet long. That’s bigger than the biggest known Wels catfish. Phil does two things about the caves. He takes an eDNA kit to one of the caves’ possible outlets and samples the water, and he suits up and dives into what he thinks may be a trench. Meanwhile Heather captures the whale-like sound in the loch, and the camera, called Deep Trekker, finds something down there that hides itself in silt. It also finds eels. Many eels. (I.e., food for a large predator.) It’s all very exciting, but this is a cryptid, so it’s also, well, cryptic. The trench turns out to be “a typical 30-foot lake shelf.” The sounds are probably methane released from the bottom, which is kind of a bummer but also kind of cool. The object on the sonar checks out to be about 20 feet long, and seems to be some kind of aquatic creature, though what it is, there’s no way to determine. The caves may or may not be real. Phil doesn’t find conclusive proof. The eDNA finds a number of fish species, and—excitement!—something “unexpected,” i.e., not in the database. The lab points out that it might be a sampling glitch. Still. Maybe it’s not. We want to believe. Don’t we?[end-mark] The post Tracking Nessie With All the Cool Tools: Expedition X Hunts the Loch Ness Monster appeared first on Reactor.

We’re Not Supposed to Talk About Voting Irregularities

Author of How to Prep When You’re Broke and Bloom Where You’re Planted online course The result of the last election has been hotly contested to this very day, and it looks like similar discontent could be afoot in 2024. Questions about the results in 2020 were called a “conspiracy theory” by some, and truth by others. But it should be noted that already, people are complaining about voting irregularities. First things first – this is absolutely not an accusation that Dominion is deliberately causing this to happen. I’d never dare to do this after the threat they posted on X. Dominion is closely monitoring claims around the Nov. 2024 election and strongly encourages use of verified, credible sources of info. We remain fully prepared to defend our company & our customers against lies and those who spread them. Get the facts: https://t.co/5EzrG8vIlT. — Dominion Voting (@dominionvoting) October 19, 2024 On the other hand, I’ve never liked a pre-emptive effort to stifle conversation. Let me be extremely clear: I’m only pointing out some people’s anecdotal reports of their early votes being switched. Whether or not this is true is up to the courts to determine, not for me to determine. Georgia In Georgia, controversial Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene shared that she was told by someone who had firsthand experience with their ballot being printed out and the vote not being for the candidate they had chosen. CHECK YOUR BALLOTS GEORGIA! Reports from Whitfield County, GA that Dominion machines are flipping votes. This is exactly the kind of fraud we saw in 2020 and it cannot be tolerated. I will be working to investigate this issue and ensure the integrity of our elections in… https://t.co/1rYyQAhE6E pic.twitter.com/0yaBBINPC3 — Marjorie Taylor Greene (@mtgreenee) October 18, 2024 Tennessee In Tennessee, a similar story has been circulating, though, in a twist, it was reported that people are seeing their votes changed from Democrat to Republican. BREAKING: Election officials in Shelby County, Tennessee, are receiving numerous reports from voters claiming that the voting machines are flipping their selections. Did we not learn from 2020? pic.twitter.com/uTGqDXgTMM — Jack (@jackunheard) October 19, 2024 Here, the mainstream media seems to indicate that people don’t understand how to use a voting machine. Texas In Texas, the accusation is more forceful. Allen West, the head of the Dallas County Republican Party, issued the following statement. So, let’s review. At least three states of which I am aware are reporting issues with people seeing that their votes are not being attributed correctly. You can do a few things to ensure that your vote is counted correctly. Follow all instructions for using voting machines. In many cases, you need to click on the candidate’s name and not the box beside their name. When your ballot is printed out, don’t just blindly hand it in. Check it and make certain your choices are all displayed accurately. If you have an issue, speak to both a poll worker AND a supervisor to report it. If possible, get proof that you registered your complaint. Regardless of who we are voting for, we each bear responsibility in this election to make certain that our votes are being counted accurately. If this election is contested… I’ve already written an article warning that the election results could cause mayhem across the country. But there will be other effects too. For example, if the Democratic candidate wins, the economy could respond and the prices of gold and silver could be driven up dramatically. If you are considering investing in tangible assets like precious metals, I strongly advise you do it before the election to get the best possible price. You can go here to contact ITM Trading, the only dealer of precious metals that I personally use. Stock up at the grocery store before the election. You don’t want to have to be out there in the midst of riots grabbing a gallon of milk and some Oreos. Order anything you might need on Amazon now, otherwise your order could be delayed due to post-election chaos. Be prepared for some contention. A lot of readers have already shared that they’ve taken time off work during the election and immediately afterward, just in case either side feels they have reason to believe the results were unfairly tallied. Regardless of how this race turns out, a whole bunch of people are going to be extremely unhappy. My advice is to prepare accordingly, check your ballot carefully, and then stay away from places prone to protests for the duration. What about you? Have you heard any stories about early voting not being accurate? Can you tell us about it? Let’s discuss it in the comments, preferably without getting Daisy sued. How the West Will Win (Again)

Buenas tardes, señoras y señores. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. This is my first time joining Foro Madrid. I am honored. I bring you greetings from The Heritage Foundation and from our president, Kevin Roberts. You know, I used to criticize Barack Obama for his apology tours. That’s when he’d go around the world apologizing for how bad he thought America had been. Only now, after the United States has exported woke DEI [diversity, equity, and inclusion] foreign policy and drag shows to embassies around the world, I find myself here desperately wanting to apologize for Barack Obama. And I especially apologize for the Biden-Harris administration. A pleasure to be in Argentina—a beautiful country. Thank you for your gracious hospitality. Key Takeaway I am also grateful to be with so many heroes. In my brief remarks, I hope to leave you with one clear message: The fate of all our countries is at stake. Those who win the moral case for freedom will determine the outcome. We have much in common, across heritage and history. And this is the challenge we all now share. We must win the moral case for freedom to determine the future of the countries we know and love. I put to you that the Left’s fatal flaw is that it has abandoned the consent of the governed. I believe the Right’s inherent strength is to care about, to cultivate, to reflect the will of the people. Conservatives desire a smaller, representative government not for its own sake, but for the sake of human flourishing. We don’t mistrust government because it’s a shared human effort, we just think that the proper cooperative unit for daily decisions, and many large ones, is the family. The entrenched establishments don’t want a constitutionally limited government because it means they lose power and will be held more accountable by the people who put them in power. Accountability, however, must extend through the entire bureaucracy and all of the administrative state. Look no further than nearby Brazil for the glaring reminder that human flourishing is never guaranteed. Most of history has been a story of power and tyranny, of poverty and privation. We who live under the blessings of liberty are not immune to these dangers. Today, across the West, our founding ideals are under assault like never before, from within our respective nations—as well as without. Our nations are beset by social, cultural, political, economic, moral, and religious challenges. In America—in Washington, D.C., specifically—it has become so dysfunctional that it is difficult for serious, good-faith leaders to prioritize these problems, let alone solve them. The collectivist Left is not merely in competition with the Right; it is in active opposition to the moral, intellectual, and social foundations on which our entire civilization rests. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised to find ourselves here. We took for granted that others shared our belief—that economic, social, and political freedom are inseparable. Inseparable. The whole yearning of the human spirit. It is one whole—as Milton Friedman said. Anything that reduces freedom in one part of our lives is likely to affect freedom in other parts. But not all the enemies of freedom are domestic. We invited one of the greatest foes of freedom onto equal footing on the world stage—Communist China. China not only opposes this in belief and in practice; they actively work to undermine Western values. They picked up where the Soviet Union left off, and to this day support socialist nations such as Venezuela and Cuba, as they try to export their poisonous worldview more broadly into our hemisphere. However, let me put it more directly: Communist China is a corrupt regime. China’s government operates without the consent of its people. Nearly 1.5 billion people with no voice. An illegal regime of unelected bureaucrats. Once we acknowledge that the Chinese Community Party has no claim to moral legitimacy, is it any surprise to understand why they operate in bad faith? What do domestic and external threats to our way of life have in common? This abandonment of the consent of the governed. It is the Left’s fatal flaw. As I was preparing these remarks, I was reminded of a short story titled “The Immortal,” by someone you all know very well, Jorge Luis Borges. In this story, a man achieves immortality on his journey to find the “Immortal City.” The city when he finds it, is a maze—a labyrinth—of senseless passages and staircases, twisting and turning into themselves and dead ends—created by immortal men driven senseless by the monotony of their existence. In this fable, these immortals read to me like the people we know who seek to build utopia here on earth. In their embrace of novelty they have lost their understanding of human nature: the pursuit of the good, the true, and the beautiful. This illustrates our challenge. Those self-styled elites who look down on us, like ants in a maze, think that our very existence is senseless, absent their direction. To them our consent is secondary. We are—in others’ words—deplorable. This is why we, together, viscerally reject global governance. We refuse to give up on who we are, where we are from. We will never dismiss who and what we value. We here today know we have responsibility to engage our fellow man in the pursuit of and understanding of the truth. Human history tells us that there will be periods of change and challenge—and the people will look for shelter from the storm. The institutions that traditionally provide that shelter are safe havens and transmitters of knowledge and culture. However, the institutions that once taught the truth and would cultivate virtues have been captured by Marxist ideology. In the corporate world, consider how the environmental, social, and governance debate perfectly illustrates this. People spouting Marxist ideas now control too much of the means of production. The largest financial institutions that invest, fund, and dictate how our economies move are pushing this. But it’s not just the economics of it. Because the “E” is how we live. The “S” is what we believe. The “G” is that they get to keep score. It’s all-consuming. And they have a significant head start. But they will lose. Because they are thieves, having stolen our property. And we never gave consent. Consider the way the forces of diversity, equity, and inclusion demonstrate this. We are told to our face that the once clarion call of meritocratic equal opportunity must give way to socialism’s equal outcomes. And because of the color of our faces, we are told that we cannot oppose this. Those who supposedly know better are our betters. However, they too will lose. Because once someone else mandates you follow their definition of diversity, it is no longer diverse. It fails by its own logic. And we never gave consent. The consent of the governed is the great clarity we must bring to this debate. This is the only path that allows the people to retain the inherent God-given right to make choices. We must protect our economic and social freedom to enjoy the very freedom it offers. The freedom where souls can make their own choices, informed by bishops and rabbis, poets and philosophers. Consent of the governed and self-government all rest on free speech. As Aristotle instructs, speech is what makes us political animals. It is what allows for deliberation—refining of ideas, knowing the truth. It is what allows us to choose the good and to self-govern. And that is why the Left stifles speech. It is dangerous. They can’t control the narrative. There can be no freedom without free speech. Our imaginations need not be spurred hard to remember what we know from history. If we lose this battle for freedom, we know the injustices, travesties, and indeed horrors that await the people. The Left are divorced from reality; and we must break the hold they have on the people. So, yes, the Left’s long march through the institutions has been effective; it weaponizes every lever against anyone resisting its soul-sucking agenda. This worldview is the antithesis of the good life and undermines the principles of freedom and prosperity that we hold dear. You know the Left is a poison. And I am delighted to be here with you because I know what you stand for—and we will stand together—not to contain the Left, not to deal with the Left. We are here to crush the Left. We are here to suffocate the state. We are here to restore self-governance. And The Heritage Foundation is here to commit all our effort and sweat to our partnership with all of you—to win—for the people. We are optimistic in the face of this complexity. While the Left’s institutional capture and the media’s complacency present challenges, there is a silver lining. The Left’s abandonment of persuasion in a democracy where people’s will and their vote still matter—so long as we demand it—offers us this opportunity. The failure to engage genuinely with the electorate and their reliance on institutional power over public discourse reveals the weakness. In a democracy, the power ultimately resides with the people, and the Left’s overconfidence can be their downfall. We must reassert the moral case for freedom. This case was made long ago, dating back to the Magna Carta in England, but it needs to be reaffirmed. In powerful rhetoric and in bright bold contrast. We must emphasize the inseparability of liberty and responsibility, as Friedrich Hayek observed. Responsibility is the reward of freedom. It is what keeps our lives from being trivial, as Charles Murray wrote. As we make the case for freedom, we must also act. Our vision of winning must follow a natural sequence. We must go to the people and listen to where they are. Not where we wish them to be, but where they are. Understanding that, we must shape public opinion. Across all existing platforms, by creating new platforms, and supporting individuals, like Elon Musk, who put their own personal fortunes and reputation on the line for all of us. Then, brushfires in the minds of men and women will drive the demand for change. The deafening chorus will create cultural momentum and political will. Public policy will follow—and we must sustain those wins against entrenched lobbying, and against moneyed interests. At the same time we will lead the restoration of seminal institutions and the creation of new ones. We know how to play this game. Back home, left to our own devices, the American people rejected colonialism just as we rejected slavery, second-class citizenship for women, mercantilism, socialism, Wilsonian globalism, fascism, communism, and (today) wokeism. To the Left, these assertions of patriotic self-assurance are just so many signs of our moral depravity and intellectual inferiority—proof that, in fact, we need a ruling elite making decisions for us. We, however, should be proud, not ashamed of America’s and the West’s unique cultures of social equality and ordered liberty. After all, the countries where Marxist elites have won political and economic power are all weaker, poorer, and less free for it. We must press this advantage. Ladies and gentlemen, in this generational and civilizational struggle for freedom, we must cover the whole field. Offense and defense. We must be both Lionel Messi and Cristian Romero. In man’s quest for knowledge, we must never forget that certain things are true no matter how far into the past we dig nor how far into the future we dream. Of course, mankind will discover new things about our past, and we will always innovate toward a better future. But that happens best in peace and leads to flourishing if we follow the truth: that man is designed for self-governance and the consent of the governed is the only path to legitimacy. These truths must inform the hierarchy of values we apply to our social fabric. A Call to Action As we said at the beginning, this is a battle for the soul of our societies. Ronald Reagan is often quoted for saying, “Freedom is a fragile thing and it’s never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation.” As Kevin Roberts says, “This is the duty history has put before us and the standard by which our generation of conservatives will be judged. And we should not want it any other way.” This appeal to the people must come with a balance, of course, that politics not come to dominate their lives. But when we must be political, let us answer the call. Remember Aristotle believed man was a “political animal” because we are social creatures with the power of speech and moral reasoning. Thus, let us be political animals. We shall roar like lions. Encourage the Argentine people to roar and support [Argentine President Javier] Milei to ignite growth. Encourage the Spanish people to roar and support [Santiago] Abascal to defend national sovereignty. Encourage the Italian people to roar and support [Italian Prime Minister Giorgia] Meloni and restore the family as the building block of society. Encourage the Brazilian people to roar and support and defend themselves against Alexandre de Moraes. Encourage the people around the world to roar in support of self-governance. Encourage the American people to roar and as we have said in recent days, “fight, fight, fight!” for the people. Onward to freedom! Thank you. Make Your Own Wine Vinegar at Home

A popular ingredient in both salads and recipes is wine vinegar, with red being the most popular but white used as well. If your place is like mine, there are multiple bottles of wine in the cupboards, that have been used for cooking, having a drink with friends and even marinating with all in various stages of fullness. Some may even be full bottles, that you didn't really like, but the frugal part of you won't allow it to be poured down the drain, so there it sits, taking up precious shelf space. Homemade Wine Vinegar You can take these odds and ends wine leftovers, or even use full bottles, and make some great wine vinegar right at home, with no exotic or “special” ingredients needed. Just the wine, some live, (not pasteurized) preferably organic, apple cider vinegar (with or without “the mother”) and a little time. It is as easy as it sounds, and your frugal self will love you for being able to find a use for these bits of leftover wine. Directions: To begin the process, you will need a bowl or wide mouth jar large enough to hold the amount of wine you will be turning during the fermentation process. It should be very clean and non-reactive. You will also need the live, organic apple cider vinegar, a clean towel (large enough to cover the bowl or jar), a bottle or jar to keep the completed vinegar in. (One of the cleaned and sterilized wine bottles will work well for this.) Pour the wine into the bowl or jar you are using for the fermenting process. Although you would normally ferment the red wine and white wine separately, if you only have a bit of each and you want to try combining the two, go for it! But remember your proportions just in case you develop something that you really like, so you can replicate it! For each cup of wine placed into the bowl, add 3 tablespoons of the apple cider vinegar and stir vigorously. Cover the bowl with the clean towel, securing it with a large rubber band. Let stand at room temperature. Stir the wine vigorously once per day. Usually, within a week to 10 days, a gelatinous film should form on top of the mixture. This will be “the mother”. Begin your “taste testing” in about 2 weeks. When the mixture begins to taste more like a vinegar than a wine, it is time to move it to the air tight bottle or jar it will be kept in. (This is where you may reuse a thoroughly cleaned, resealable wine bottle.) The air tight container is necessary, as although the air exposure was necessary during the fermentation process, at this point, it can do more harm than good. From this point, you can allow the vinegar to age further or if you are happy with the flavor, begin using. If you have made way more vinegar than what you can use, package the excess in smaller, decorative bottles (well cleaned and sterilized) and use as hostess or holiday gifts.
