Prime Day is a great time to get the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic for 33 percent off

Get that physical rotating bezel! | Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge This year’s Samsung Galaxy Watch lineup had no physical rotating bezels. Boo. So, it’s a good thing that the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is roughly 33 percent off for Amazon Prime Day. This might be the last-gen Galaxy Watch, but hardware-wise, you’re not missing out on much besides a slightly faster processor and a new 3-in-1 BioActive sensor. (That said, Samsung doesn’t make much use of the new sensor yet outside an experimental new Advanced Glycation End Products metric.) The 43mm Bluetooth version is $269.93, while the larger 47mm is $281.99. Personally, this is the Galaxy Watch I’d pick for myself. While I like the newest Galaxy Watch 7 (which is also on sale for $261), I found myself missing the Classic’s rotating bezel. Continue reading…

Severance season 1 is coming home on Blu-ray

Image: Apple While new episodes of Severance won’t stream on Apple TV Plus until January, you will be able to own a physical copy of the show’s first season in just a few weeks. Unlike Mark Scout (Adam Scott) and his fellow Lumon employees who can never entirely go home, Severance’s first season will be making its way to more living rooms after its upcoming Blu-ray release on December 17th. As 9to5 Mac notes, the show is only being released as a Blu-ray at 1080p resolution and won’t be coming out in UHD. The release of the Blu-ray (which is available to preorder on Amazon right now) is timed exactly a month ahead of Severance’s season 2 return on January 17th, meaning you’ll have plenty of time to get caught up before new episodes start dropping. Kaspersky no longer on Google Play Store anywhere following US ban

Illustration by Kristen Radtke / The Verge Citing US restrictions, Google removed Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus software from the Play Store and terminated its developer account in the days leading up to the September 29th deadline of the restrictions, according to a Kaspersky blog post yesterday. The decision was “based on overinterpretation of the U.S. restrictions,” Kaspersky writes, insisting that the restrictions “don’t prohibit the sales and distribution of Kaspersky’s products and services outside the United States.” Apps previously installed from Google Play “will continue to work normally,” the company added, but it won’t get updates and can’t be reinstalled. On September 27th, Kaspersky forum users started reporting that they could no longer find the app on Google Play. A... Continue reading…

Scientists who built ‘foundation’ for AI awarded Nobel Prize

Geoffrey Hinton, called the “Godfather of AI,” during day Collision 2023 at Enercare Centre in Toronto, Canada. | Photo By Ramsey Cardy / Sportsfile for Collision via Getty Images Two scientists credited with laying the “foundation of today’s powerful machine learning,” University of Toronto professor emeritus Geoffrey Hinton and Princeton University professor John Hopfield, were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics today. Their discoveries and inventions laid the groundwork for many of the recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, the Nobel committee at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said. Since the 1980s, their work has enabled the creation of artificial neural networks, computer architecture loosely modeled after the structure of the brain. By mimicking the way our brains make connections, neural networks allow AI tools to essentially “learn by example.” Developers can train an artificial neural... Continue reading…

The Kindle Paperwhite Kids is down to just $115 for October Prime Day

The Kindle Paperwhite Kids is an e-reader fit for the whole family, complete with optional parental controls. | Image: Amazon As expected, Amazon is offering some great discounts on its own devices as part of its October Prime Day event — including e-readers like the note-taking Kindle Scribe, which is down to $254.99 ($85 off) at Amazon. However, the Kindle deal that really stands out is on the Kindle Paperwhite Kids. Normally $169.99, right now it’s down to just $114.99 ($55 off) at Amazon, which is $5 shy of its best price to date. If you want a Kindle Paperwhite without ads, you’d typically have to pay $169.99 for the privilege. Thankfully, though, the Kindle Paperwhite Kids offers a way around that, making it a great e-reader for the whole family. Despite being marketed for children, the kid-friendly device boasts all the same features we loved in the... Continue reading…

Meta is bringing AI-edited video ads to Facebook and Instagram

Illustration by Nick Barclay / The Verge The next time you scroll through your Instagram and Facebook feed, you might see a video ad edited with AI. That’s because Meta is testing new AI video editing capabilities that will allow advertisers to animate an image as well as expand the borders of a video. GIF: Meta Advertisers can turn a still image into a video. With the AI animation tool, advertisers can upload a static image and then use Meta’s tool to “generate” a video. As seen in this example, Meta’s AI tool makes the strawberries in the background slowly float around the jar. The new tools can also make an existing video larger. It uses AI to generate “unseen pixels in each video frame” to increase its size, sort of like how some AI image editing... Continue reading…
