5 Reasons DC Shouldn’t Be a State

5 Reasons DC Shouldn’t Be a State

Many Democrats dream of ways to ensure they never lose power again. This is why they want to eliminate the Electoral College, pack the Supreme Court, and make the District of Columbia a state. As D.C. celebrates 50 years of “home rule,” here are five reasons that autonomy—let alone statehood—isn’t a good idea. 1. The Constitution The U.S. Constitution gave Congress the power to create a “District (not exceeding ten Miles square)” to “become the Seat of the Government of the United States.” In 1790, Congress created Washington, D.C., which was to be run by three commissioners appointed by the president. Two and a half centuries later, the residents of this district should know what the deal is: D.C. was never meant to be a state itself. D.C. residents can, at any time, relocate to any state in the country. In 1964, they were allowed to vote for president. They have a nonvoting representative in Congress. The current mayor and all 13 D.C. Council members, except for two nominal “independents,” are Democrats. On Nov. 5, 92.5% of D.C. voters went for Kamala Harris for president. If you want to imagine what two D.C. senators would look like politically, check out D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton. Democrats want to lock in two senators like that, forever. That was not the Founders’ intention. 2. Crime Over 1,000 carjackings occurred last year in the District of Columbia. This year, we’re supposed to be happy that the number reportedly has declined, along with some other crimes. But in the past year, the Secret Service has foiled two attempted carjackings in the best parts of Washington. The general sense of the population is that D.C. is returning to the bad old days of the 1970s and ’80s. Mentally ill vagrants, turnstile jumpers, shoplifters, and street racers perpetuate a climate of incivility and impunity. At the CVS drugstore near the White House, they lock up toilet paper. In less tony locations, they lock up everything. In really tough D.C. neighborhoods, they just close the stores. Retail theft is a major impediment to businesses large and small, and store closures further impoverish already disadvantaged neighborhoods. 3. Education Spending per student in the District of Columbia is the second highest in the nation, yet the results are abysmal. Truancy rates are high. Test scores are low on average, although a few schools do better. Only 33.7% of students who took D.C.’s assessment test last year “met or exceeded grade level expectations” in English. Only 22.5% did so in math. As a result, most parents who can afford it either enter their kids in the lottery for charter schools after fifth grade or send them to private school. Back in the 1970s, President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, sent his daughter Amy to Hardy Middle School in the Glover Park neighborhood. Two later Democrat presidents—Bill Clinton in the 1990s and Barack Obama after him—sent their daughters to Sidwell Friends, an expensive private school a mile away from Hardy and Glover Park. That says a lot.   4. Homelessness and Vagrancy Last year, I wrote to Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, about illegal tent encampments on public land. A few weeks later, the National Park Service removed a long-standing campsite in front of the State Department and another near the Kennedy Center. The result wasn’t a renovated green space for locals and visitors to enjoy, but a fenced-off area no one can enter, with benches no one can sit on. Is this “progressive”? Meanwhile, although the federal agency cleared trespassing campers, the D.C. government ignores violations on the land it controls. A few weeks ago, a man set up a tent on the pedestrian overpass at Virginia Avenue and I-66. He observably suffered from mental illness. In addition to shouting at strangers, the man set small cooking fires outside and even inside his tent. Here’s a photo in which you can see orange flames from a fire through the fabric of the tent at left: Letting a troubled person pitch a tent anywhere he wants is both unsafe for him and the community. The man eventually was removed, but tents keep popping up on public D.C. land, singly or in groups, including these ones: An illegal campsite along Rock Creek Parkway in Washington, D.C. (Simon Hankinson) An illegal campsite at Washington Circle and K Street NW. (Simon Hankinson) 5. Corruption The District of Columbia recently celebrated 50 years of controlling its own affairs. Before President Richard Nixon granted this “home rule,” the president picked a mayor and commissioners to handle everything from traffic to trash. Congress managed education. Home rule was a mixed blessing. With local control came local corruption. No one symbolized that better than “Mayor for Life” Marion Barry. A statue of Barry stands outside D.C. city hall on Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The plinth below the statue reads: “Mr. Barry was a larger than life figure—a man who could both lead the protest as an activist and engage the protest as Mayor.” But Barry is also remembered for the city’s corruption and for his personal failings. Washington Post columnist Colbert King explains how Barry served six months in jail for crack cocaine possession, failed to pay taxes, and was censured twice by the D.C. Council for misconduct. Sadly, the tradition of D.C. voters reelecting politicians despite corruption is alive and well. Council member Trayon White was indicted recently on charges of taking bribes to throw city contracts to friends. With photos appearing to show White taking envelopes of cash from an FBI informant, he has some ’splainin’ to do. Despite this, White was reelected to his Ward 8 seat on the D.C. Council with 84% of the vote. His trial has been put off until 2026, pending which he’ll remain a voting council member, collecting a salary of $161,000 and deciding where to spend our tax dollars. Washington, D.C., is the capital of a great nation. It has remarkable museums and buildings. But it is in all respects just a midsize city, without any of the hinterland, industry, agriculture, and other attributes even the smallest of our 50 states needs to be a peer with the others. The city’s residents deserve better government, but not statehood. The post 5 Reasons DC Shouldn’t Be a State appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Remove Oil Stains From Your Driveway Regular blue dawn dish soap, cat litter, and a scrub broom are all you need to remove an oil stain from your driveway! Directions: Sprinkle cat litter on the oil stain which will help absorb the oil. Let that sit for about 30-45 minutes. Next, add a mixture of dawn dish soap and water to the area. Using a scrub room, scrub the area and watch the oil stain disappear! 5. Pretreat Oily Stains On Your Clothes Apply dish dawn soap to oil stains on your clothing and let sit for 30-60 minutes. Next, take a soft bristled toothbrush and gently scrub the stain and throw into the wash! Depending on the severity of the stain, it could take a couple of tries. Sunny Hostin Highlights Ghoulish Takes About Healthcare CEO’s Assassination

Since the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was one of the biggest news stories all week, it was only a matter of time before one of the cast members of ABC’s The View said something abhorrent. On Friday, despite claiming she was against the violence, co-host Sunny Hostin highlighted some of the ghoulish social media comments mocking the murder and stoked fear of how Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could damage healthcare in America. Meanwhile, co-host Ana Navarro pointed to how at least one positive change had occurred since the targeted killing. Near the top of the segment, Hostin wanted to draw attention to some of the heinous comments made on social media, without condemning them: I was looking at some of the social media comments and try to stay away from social media but it said – Some of the comments were, “thoughts and deductibles to the family.” One of the comments was, “unfortunately, my condolences are out of network.” “Isn't that something?” she gawked, “I really think it's reflective about how people are feeling about their healthcare.” Later in the segment, Navarro remarked that the assassination “has definitely shined light on our health crisis” and seemed to tout how Blue Cross Blue Shield had reneged on an unpopular new policy shortly after the assassination of Thompson: Yesterday, Blue Cross Blue Shield which had announced that they were going to only cover anesthesia for X amount and if the operation went overtime, they were not going to cover it. So let's say you were having an open heart surgery and instead of it being four hours, it was six, they were going to cut off paying for anesthesia after four hours, which is ghoulish. They reversed course on that announcement that they had made. So, I think this has definitely shined light on our health crisis.     Following up Hostin, co-Host Sara Haines went after the assassin. “The sheer stupidity that people would turn to violence and think they're effectuating change is the most ghastly part of this,” she said. “And that someone would take it upon a subject and target that person as if you're going to change any system. You're not, dude. You're not going to change anything.” Haines also condemned the social media comments saying, “I have a disgusting sense of humor and not one of these that I read – It actually made me feel so sad. It’s not even just that he's a father and has kids, he’s a human.” “Yeah. It wasn’t funny,” Hostin agreed after the fact. Anti-Trump Republican Alyssa Farah Griffin also denounced the social media comments and seemed to reference the pro-assassination celebration from deranged leftist journalist Taylor Lorenz. “But I too was so disturbed, I saw some prominent figures on the far-left who were celebrating this. And we have lost our collective conscience,” she began to say before Joy Behar interrupted to ask: “How do you know that?” “Cause they’re known,” Haines shot back. Farah Griffin continued to rail against the comments: I'm not even going to amplify and say who because it is ghoulish, it is disgusting, it is evil. If you want to effect change in this country, it is a democracy; organize, activate, get out and talk to people, talk your congressman. Violence is absolutely never the answer and to single out one individual because you have an issue with a company, a corporation, or an entire industry that’s been fraught for decades. It’s horrible.” Of course, Behar wanted to try to smear Republicans with the shooting. She warned: “They have no interest at all in [fixing healthcare].” Farah Griffin actually stood up to her and pointed out that, “we complain about our healthcare right now, we're living under Obamacare. Obamacare ain't perfect either. It actually created monopolies in the healthcare system.” “But we have nothing better!” Behar desperately tried to counter. Hostin’s other take about the assassination was about stoking fear against Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about how he would make healthcare in America worse: But what I'm nervous about is if you read Project 2025, which is probably going to be the plan for healthcare, it's about privatization. It's about sort of getting rid of the at least limited amount of sort of universal healthcare that we have. And RFK Jr. really is more into holistic things so I wonder, you know, if you don't believe in true med – in conventional medicine, what kind of medical system are we going to have?   Hostin claims she hopes that the BCBS decision wasn't influenced by the assassination. "I'm not sure I would guarantee anything," Navarro said. pic.twitter.com/fWrnY0Q4ax — Nicholas Fondacaro (@NickFondacaro) December 6, 2024   “If you're angry at what's happening now, I'm nervous about what could happen,” she proclaimed. The transcript is below. Click "expand" to read: ABC’s The View December 6, 2024 11:04:25 a.m. Eastern (…) SUNNY HOSTIN: I was looking at some of the social media comments and try to stay away from social media but it said – Some of the comments were, “thoughts and deductibles to the family.” One of the comments was, “unfortunately, my condolences are out of network.” And so I think it really -- Isn't that something? I really think it's reflective about how people are feeling about their healthcare. And if you look at this particular CEO, while he made about $10 million a year which is not actually unusual for a CEO of a company this size, this particular health company, UnitedHealthcare is the largest responsible for Medicare programs for people over the age of 65. And our country is one of the only countries that doesn't have universal health care and we don't take care of our elderly. And people are feeling the pinch. We talk about that all the time. And I think people are really angry at the health care system and unfortunately, it's translating to this father. SARA HAINES: The sheer stupidity that people would turn to violence and think they're effectuating change is the most ghastly part of this. Because it’s not the humor – there are people thinking they're funny. There are people writing things. I have a disgusting sense of humor and not one of these that I read – HOSITN: Yeah. It wasn’t funny. HAINES: It actually made me feel so sad. It’s not even just that he's a father and has kids, he’s a human. HOSTIN: Yeah HAINES: And that someone would take it upon a subject and target that person as if you're going to change any system. You're not, dude. You're not going to change anything. JOY BEHAR: But we don't know if that's it. It could be a red herring. There could be some other thing going on. [Crosstalk] ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: We don’t necessarily know HAINES: We don't know but it was an assassination. [Crosstalk] HAINES: It had messaging on it and everything else. BEHAR: But that could be part of the red herring. HAINES: Joy, wait. BEHAR: Sorry, go ahead. HAINES: There's a corporate greed problem in this country that is not just unique to healthcare. It's everywhere where the haves and have-nots have never been further apart. HOSTIN: Yes. HAINES: And the rage is understandable and real. Never to this level, but the problem is, you knocked out this poor man, someone else is coming up. We just -- there was just that – remember? Colman Domingo's madness? HOSITN: Yes. Yes. HAINES: I won't ruin the ending, it’s an amazing series. But there's a one-on-one scene where the CEO is there and Colman Domingo's character has so much rage at him, and he said, ‘You knock me out, one more pops up. I'm a puppet in the machine.’ So, to think that you can transform that machine by killing that soul's moment here on Earth is the most disturbing part of this story. FARAH GRIFFIN: Thank you all for saying that, because I think thoughts and prayers go out to his family. This is a husband, this is a father and -- HAINES: He’s a son. FARAH GRIFFIN: Violence is absolutely never the answer. And I think it was shocking because it happened in Midtown where every one of us walked, it was the morning while commuting into work, and then there is this manhunt afterward. I think there’s a good sense of the motive. We could learn more. It could be a red herring. But I too was so disturbed, I saw some prominent figures on the far-left who were celebrating this. And we have lost our collective conscience -- BEHAR: How do you know that? HAINES: Cause they’re known. FARAH GRIFFIN: I'm not even going to amplify and say who because it is ghoulish, it is disgusting, it is evil. If you want to effect change in this country, it is a democracy; organize, activate, get out and talk to people, talk your congressman. Violence is absolutely never the answer and to single out one individual because you have an issue with a company, a corporation, or an entire industry that’s been fraught for decades. It’s horrible. BEHAR: And I would add, don't vote for Republicans because they want to overthrow Obamacare. [Crosstalk] BEHAR: They have no interest at all in this particular – FARAH GRIFFIN: But respectfully, we complain about our healthcare right now, we're living under Obamacare. Obamacare ain't perfect either. It actually created monopolies in the healthcare system. BEHAR: But we have nothing better! HOSTIN: But the thing is it’s the thing that's come closest to universal healthcare. My fear also when I was reading about this story is that, you know, we're going to have RFK Jr. responsible for Health and Human Services, who has a brain worm, but he's also – [Laughter] It's not just the brain worm- HAINES: Wait, legal note! I think the worm I gone now. HOSTIN: No, I think it got encapsulated in his brain, I went down a rabbit hole an that. FARAH GRIFFIN: A worm hole, if you will! HOSTIN: Yeah, a worm hole if you will! But what I'm nervous about is if you read Project 2025, which is probably going to be the plan for healthcare, it's about privatization. It's about sort of getting rid of the at least limited amount of sort of universal healthcare that we have. And RFK Jr. Really is more into holistic things so I wonder, you know, if you don't believe in true med – in conventional medicine, what kind of medical system are we going to have? BEHAR: I don't know. HOSTIN: If you're angry at what's happening now, I'm nervous about what could happen. (…) 11:09:12 a.m. Eastern ANA NAVARRO: Yesterday, Blue Cross Blue Shield which had announced that they were going to only cover anesthesia for X amount and if the operation went overtime, they were not going to cover it. So let's say you were having an open heart surgery and instead of it being four hours, it was six, they were going to cut off paying for anesthesia after four hours, which is ghoulish. San Diego Democrat says California sanctuary policies are too weak, calls for stronger protections against ICE

A proposal for sanctuary city policies by a Democratic county supervisor would far exceed those already imposed on California by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. Nora Vargas, the chairwoman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, said California protections for illegal aliens were not strong enough and issued a proposal to further frustrate deportation efforts. 'Sanctuary policies are reckless and dangerous, putting innocent lives at risk.' "San Diego County has a vested interest in maintaining public safety and effective law enforcement while also managing its resources efficiently. By avoiding active cooperation with [Immigration and Customs Enforcement], including through specific notification to ICE of the release dates of immigrants, the County avoids treating a group of individuals differently solely on the basis of their immigration status," the resolution read. The resolution would restrict all San Diego County officials from cooperating with ICE on immigration enforcement efforts related to civil infractions but did not restrict cooperating with investigations into suspected criminal violations. Vargas said that all San Diegans were at greater risk when illegal aliens are afraid to report crimes to law enforcement officials to avoid possible deportation. Republican County Supervisor Jim Desmond told Fox News that he would vote against the measure because it would endanger citizens. "Sanctuary policies are reckless and dangerous, putting innocent lives at risk. Every American family deserves safety," he said. "No community should suffer the heartbreak of losing a loved one due to politically driven policies that protect criminals instead of holding them accountable."Tom Homan, Trump's pick for "border czar" in his incoming administration, has warned that local officials getting in the way of ICE operations were breaking the law, and he would seek their criminal prosecution. Others have warned that the federal government would withhold funds from local governments that didn't cooperate with ICE. Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a campaign to pass legislation to oppose the agenda of President-elect Donald Trump. Part of that effort includes funneling millions of dollars to the attorney general's office in order to file lawsuits against the incoming administration. A profile of Vargas at the Voice of San Diego referred to her as the first "binational" person on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, as well as the first immigrant on that board. FBI arrests radical Democrat on Boston City Council in connection with bogus kickback scheme

The FBI hauled away one of the radical Democrats on the Boston City Council Friday morning on public corruption charges. Steve Kelleher, FBI assistant special agent in charge in Boston, revealed at a press conference that Democratic Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson, who represents District 7, was arrested without incident outside her home in Dorchester. Anderson, an attendee and defender of Mayor Michelle Wu's racially segregated 2023 holiday party and a former illegal alien who avoided deportation, faces five federal counts of wire fraud and one federal count of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. According to the federal indictment, Anderson — who previously hired her son and sister as salaried employees despite a prohibition against hiring immediate family members, then topped up their salaries by tens of thousands of dollars — allegedly: defrauded the City of Boston by (A) conceiving and proposing an arrangement whereby Staff Member A would receive additional compensation but would kickback most of this bonus pay; (b) providing materially false and misleading information related to Staff Member A, and related to a bonus payment to be awarded to Staff Member A; (c) omitting material information regarding the bonus payment to be paid to Staff Member A; and (d) accepting approximately $7,000 in cash from Staff Member A pursuant to a concealed bonus kickback arrangement between FERNANDES ANDERSON and Staff Member A. The unnamed staff member is one of Anderson's relatives. 'This was a situation of her own making.' "Despite the fact that she was under investigation by the state ethics commission, Ms. Fernandes Anderson hired another family member on her staff at Boston City Hall to handle constituent service," U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy said at the press conference. "That staff member was related to her. But Ms. Fernandes Anderson falsely represented to City Hall that there was no familial relationship." In the lead-up to the alleged kickback scheme for which Anderson apparently required her accomplice to sign a nondisclosure agreement, the Democratic councilor was dodging monthly rent and car payments, facing an impending $5,000 civil penalty from the Ethics Commission, and racking up significant bank overdraft fees, all despite making over $103,000 a year. Concerning her arrest Friday, Kelleher told reporters, "This was a situation of her own making." FBI Special Agent in Charge Jodi Cohen said in a statement, "Using public office for personal gain is a crime, plan and simple." "Her behavior, as alleged in today's indictment, is a slap in the face to the hardworking taxpayers in the city of Boston who have every right to expect that the city's funds are in good and honest hands," added Cohen. Anderson, who chairs the council's civil rights, racial equity, and immigrant advancement committee, previously courted controversy by: refusing to properly take the oath of office; marrying a convicted murderer in prison; calling the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians a "military operation" after blocking the passage of a resolution affirming the city's solidarity with Israel; violating American immigration law and nearly getting deported back to Cape Verde before becoming a citizen in 2019; and failing to disclose campaign committee deposits in a timely manner and accepting contributions in excess of state limits. The Associated Press indicated that Wu suggested Anderson should resign. "Like any member of the community, Councilor Fernandes Anderson has the right to a fair legal process. But the serious nature of these charges undermine[s] the public trust and will prevent her from effectively serving the city," said the mayor. Like Blaze News? Jury in trial of Daniel Penny say they are deadlocked over top charge of 2nd-degree manslaughter

After three days of deliberation, the jury in the trial of Daniel Penny reported Friday to the judge that they were unable to reach a verdict in the first count of manslaughter in the second degree and prosecution decided to drop the charge. Penny, a 26-year-old Marine veteran, was arrested after he got into an altercation with a man named Jordan Neely, who was making death threats against passengers on a subway train in New York City. Videos showed Penny subduing the man with a chokehold, which led to Neely's death. Penny was charged with manslaughter by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. On Friday the prosecutors responded to the jury development by telling the judge they could drop the first count in order to continue with the case. The judge said that he was apprehensive about continuing the case against Penny and went to recess to consider the issue. Once he returned the judge agreed to drop the first count and continue the case with a second count. The second count is criminally negligent homicide, which carries a lesser punishment upon conviction.Several witnesses on the subway train have defended Penny and called him a hero for his actions, while some activists have accused him of racism because Neely was a black man. This is a developing story, and additional information has been added. Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!
