Ruhle Defends Softball Interview: 'All Press Is Good Press'

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle stopped by Morning Joe on Friday to react to criticisms that she conducted a softball interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. Ruhle dismissed the idea, joking that “all press is good press” before getting more serious and claiming that criticizing Harris for using “platitudes” is unfair because she’s a politician and that’s just what politicians do. Co-host Joe Scarborough declared, “I noticed that [Fox News’s] Howie Kurtz was saying you launched a softball interview with Kamala Harris, and you seem to be the running banner for about 30 minutes about how what a softball interview this interview was. Of course, nothing, nothing like Donald Trump and Sean Hannity.” As Hannity himself said, he’s a commentator with an agenda, but Ruhle fancies herself as a straight-talking business and economics reporter, so unless Ruhle wants to be viewed as a liberal version of Hannity, the standard should be higher for her.     Nevertheless, Scarborough asked, “I’m just curious what your thoughts were about Fox News desperately suggesting that she bombed a softball interview.” Downplaying the seriousness of the moment, Ruhle chirped, “Well, to Fox News, I would say ‘thank you,’ because, as I learned from Donald Trump, all press is good press, so I am thrilled to be all over their airwaves all day long.” After a digression into all the merchandise Trump is selling, Ruhle tried to get serious, “No, that's nonsense. Obviously, for anybody who watched the interview I did with Vice President Harris, we sat down for 25 minutes and talked about one single topic, the economy. It is the number one issue for voters. If Donald Trump would like to sit down and have that same conversation, I'm ready for you.” Ruhle then proceeded to defend Harris, “it's hard, because many people feel like she's speaking in platitudes. She's speaking about an economic vision, and she's not giving details. She's got an 80-page detailed policy proposal and do I think that she answers every single question and gives people exactly what they want? She doesn't. You know why? Because she's a politician, and none of them do. They all speak in platitudes.” It is also because Harris is trying to campaign as a centrist and a progressive at the same time, so people do not know which Harris is the real one. Regardless, not missing a beat, Ruhle then condemned Trump for speaking in platitudes, “Donald Trump has given absolutely nothing except mass deportations, which would be a huge issue for our economy, and he just says, you know, ‘I delivered you the best economy ever and I'm going to put across, you know, blanket tariffs.’” For Ruhle, the big question Harris has to answer is not a policy one, but a tactical one, "She needs to solve for why he still polls better on economic issues with voters because that, to me, is mind boggling. You know, when you talk to voters across the board, they say, 'I don't know what any politicians do for me, but I did get my taxes lowered,' and she made it clear, when the individual tax cuts expire next year, the one group of people who will get their taxes raised are people who make over $400,000 a year." On the previous Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Ruhle claimed that demanding Harris give a serious interview was asking for “Nirvana” and now that she herself had an opportunity to conduct such an interview, she is claiming that Harris can’t be expected to give serious answers. Even by the standards of the two people involved, that’s pretty shameless. Here is a transcript for the September 26 show: MSNBC Morning Joe 9/27/2024 9:05 AM ET JOE SCARBOROUGH: Stephanie, Mika, Mika likes watching Fox News. MIKA BRZEZINSKI: No, I don't like it, but I do watch it. SCARBOROUGH: And she keeps it on all day just to be like, did it to catastrophize. BRZEZINSKI: No. SCARBOROUGH: And yesterday I noticed that Howie Kurtz was saying you launched a softball interview with Kamala Harris, and you seem to be the running banner for about 30 minutes— BRZEZINSKI: Yes. All--30 minutes? All day. SCARBOROUGH: About how what a softball interview this interview was. Of course, nothing, nothing like Donald Trump and Sean Hannity, I’m sure, but I’m just curious what your thoughts were— BRZEZINSKI: And that she bombed it. SCARBOROUGH: — about Fox News desperately suggesting that she bombed a softball interview. STEPHANIE RUHLE: Well, to Fox News, I would say “thank you,” because, as I learned from Donald Trump, all press is good press, so I am thrilled to be all over their airwaves all day long. SCARBOROUGH: Can I buy one of your watches, will you do a brand of watches? RUHLE: Yeah, it was great, because I was watching Fox News, and I'm now excited about Melania's memoir, I'm going to have to pick that up this weekend, and I can get a silver coin that Donald Trump launched on Monday, obviously, one of the hundred grand watches and I haven't gotten my sneakers yet, but I’m sure they can tell me where to get them. No, that's nonsense. Obviously, for anybody who watched the interview I did with Vice President Harris, we sat down for 25 minutes and talked about one single topic, the economy. It is the number one issue for voters. If Donald Trump would like to sit down and have that same conversation, I'm ready for you and I think it's hugely important and it's a vulnerability for both candidates, but it's really tricky, Joe, because you obviously want to cover all of these topics, but to just do it with one candidate, it's hard, because many people feel like she's speaking in platitudes. She's speaking about an economic vision, and she's not giving details. She's got an 80-page detailed policy proposal and do I think that she answers every single question and gives people exactly what they want? She doesn't. You know why? Because she's a politician, and none of them do. They all speak in platitudes.  But Donald Trump has given absolutely nothing except mass deportations— SCARBOROUGH: Right. RUHLE: — which would be a huge issue for our economy, and he just says, you know, "I delivered you the best economy ever and I'm going to put across, you know, blanket tariffs," but the thing that I think that she needs to answer for more is despite all of the economic wins over the last four years, despite the fact that Donald Trump emotionally connected with that blue collar worker, but he didn't deliver for that blue collar worker, she needs to solve for why he still polls better on economic issues with voters— SCARBOROUGH: Right. RUHLE: — because that, to me, is mind boggling. You know, when you talk to voters across the board, they say, "I don't know what any politicians do for me, but I did get my taxes lowered," and she made it clear, when the individual tax cuts expire next year, the one group of people who will get their taxes raised are people who make over $400,000 a year. Now, a lot of people in blue cities and states are wondering what happens to that state and local tax deduction.  SCARBOROUGH: Right. RUHLE: Donald Trump said we're going to lift that cap. He's the one who put it on. We don't yet know what she's going to do.

ABC Hypes Kamala FINALLY Visiting Border, Misleads About Last Visit

Vice President and Border Czar Kamala Harris finally got around to visiting the U.S.-Mexico border, on Friday, with a little over a month before Election Day. On the topic of her long-overdue visit, ABC News –which is 100 percent in the tank for Harris – hyped her agenda for the day during Good Morning America. Co-host George Stephanopoulos and chief White House correspondent Mary Bruce teamed up to mislead viewers about when her last visit was. But CBS Mornings and NBC’s Today provided better context. In the opening teases for the show, Stephanopoulos suggested the Vice President was “set to make her first visit to our southern border since becoming the nominee, as she looks to gain ground on former President Trump on a top issue.” The use of the phrase “since becoming the nominee” was ambiguous to the point that it could leave some viewers with the misunderstanding that visiting the border was something that she did in recent months, but just had not yet been there since at least August. In reality, she had not been there in over three years as vice president. Bruce parroted that overly ambiguous language as she hyped the trip, and while helping to make the case for Harris vs. former President Donald Trump on border security: Well, immigration has been one of Kamala Harris' greatest vulnerabilities in this race. And today, she's going to tackle the issue head on, making her first visit here to the border since entering the race. We are told she is going to call for more resources here at the border, outlining more security measures including a plan to try and combat fentanyl struggling and human trafficking, she’ll push for additional resources and border agents; all things that were included in that bipartisan border deal that Donald Trump urged Republicans to block earlier this year. And that's a point Kamala Harris will make here today as well.     The ABC “journalist” also defended Harris from Trump’s criticisms of the administration’s years of inaction in securing the border. “He has said she has done the worst job in the history of any border, even though, of course George, we have seen in recent months that encounters here at the border have come down since the Biden administration imposed new asylum restrictions,” she huffed, while omitting the fact that they waited until six months before Election Day to put those rules in place. Contrast ABC’s phrasing with that of CBS Mornings, where co-host Tony Dokoupil more accurately reported that being to the border was “something she has not done in more than three years.” Unfortunately, senior White House correspondent Ed O’Keefe was still reading from the leaked Democrat talking points, falsely suggesting Harris’s only duty was to address “root cause” of migration and not border security. Over on NBC’s Today, correspondent Gabe Gutierrez also noted that “Harris is preparing to visit the U.S. southern border for the first time in more than three years.” It was a fact that was more accurately expressed on ABC’s website. Actually, the opening sentence of their online report admitted it: “Vice President Kamala Harris will visit the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday -- her first trip there in more than three years -- to call for tougher security measures and attack former President Donald Trump on an issue that has plagued her, a senior campaign official said.” The transcript is below. Click "expand" to read: ABC’s Good Morning America September 27, 2024 7:01:19 a.m. Eastern [Opening tease] GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Border battle. Vice President Harris set to make her first visit to our southern border since becoming the nominee, as she looks to gain ground on former President Trump on a top issue. (…) 7:16:07 a.m. Eastern STEPHANOPOULOS: We’re going to get the latest now on the race for the White House. Kamala Harris set to make her first trip to the border since entering the race. Chief White House correspondent Mary Bruce is on the scene in Arizona. Good morning, Mary. MARY BRUCE: Good morning, George. Well, immigration has been one of Kamala Harris' greatest vulnerabilities in this race. Now, polls do show that Donald Trump has had the advantage on this issue, but Harris is hoping trips likes this one will help her to start close the gap. Trump, for his part, has mocked Harris for even making this visit. He has said she has done the worst job in the history of any border, even though, of course George, we have seen in recent months that encounters here at the border have come down since the Biden administration imposed new asylum restrictions. George. STEPHANOPOULOS: Yes, they have come down. Okay Mary, thank you very much.

WNBA reporter says MAGA hat at Caitlin Clark playoff game made her feel 'unsafe'

A WNBA writer said that a MAGA hat made her feel unsafe while attending a WNBA playoff game and claimed the white women on one of the teams needed to control their tempers.During Game 2 of the playoff series between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun, which featured rookie star Caitlin Clark, a journalist who covers the WNBA described other fans as racist for their comments toward some players."I'm at the Sun/Fever game and the vibe is HORRENDOUS," Frankie de la Cretaz wrote. "The woman behind me was mocking DiJonai’s eyelashes & only stopped when my partner turned around & told her to stop being racist."DiJonai Carrington is a guard for the Connecticut Sun.'I've never felt unsafe at a WNBA game & tonight I did.'The writer then continued her outrage as she described "a man in a MAGA hat" and a woman wearing a "ban nails" shirt, who had props of giant fingernails on her hands.Cretaz went on to say what she witnessed at the game made her feel unsafe."I'm going to be writing about my experience tonight. I've never felt unsafe at a WNBA game & tonight I did."After a viewer pointed out there were no MAGA hats in the photo Cretaz posted, she responded with a photo of a male fan in a MAGA hat in what appeared to be the lobby, holding a sign that read "Make Basketball Great Again #22," Clark's number."Here's one of them! There was another with a literal MAGA hat that I saw too," Cretaz captioned. The Sun won the game 87-81.Cretaz's X bio describes herself as a writer for topics like sports, "gender," and "queerness," while listing her pronouns as "they/them."She has previously written for ESPN about nonbinary athletes in sports. On her Substack page, Cretaz wrote about the incident and complained that "queer or trans or a person of color" are viewed as biased in their writing when covering their own "community."It is not clear if Cretaz ever played professional basketball or if she simply feels the WNBA is her community due to the presence of lesbian players. She expanded by saying the coverage Caitlin Clark has received in 2024 is "rooted not only in racism, but in the homophobic tropes of the predatory lesbian and the queer villain.""The number of times I read WNBA coverage that seems like it was written by someone who, frankly, hates Black women is inexcusable—especially in a league that is over 80% Black," she continued. After combining her WNBA coverage into a critique of race, sexuality, and journalistic ethics, Cretaz's argument closed by saying the white women on the Indiana Fever can't control their tempers."I am deeply uncomfortable with [the] dynamic on the Indiana Fever in which the Black players are responsible for de-escalating the white women who can't keep their tempers."Like Blaze News? Oprah steps in to SAVE Kamala from disaster

“Unite for America” is an event hosted by Oprah Winfrey, who invited Kamala Harris to speak as her star guest. The event also featured American citizens who were given the chance to voice their concerns over what’s happening in their country — and not surprisingly, Harris struggled to give straightforward answers. “When you become president, what would be your specific steps to strengthening the border?” one man named Justin asked Harris. “I, you know, my background was as a prosecutor,” Harris began. “So this is not a theoretical issue for me, this is something I’ve actually worked on.” “I take very seriously the importance of having a secure border,” she continued. Pat Gray of “Pat Gray Unleashed” isn’t happy with her answer. “Why don’t we talk about the fact that you are currently the vice president of the United States of America, tasked with overseeing the border? Huh! Why don’t we discuss that? I’ll tell you why. ‘Cause millions, tens of millions have come across that border on your watch,” Gray says. Oprah even jumped in at one point to get some laughs from the audience when Harris admitted she was a “gun owner,” acting shocked that Harris would be in possession of a firearm at all. “I did not know that,” Oprah squealed to laughter from the audience. “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” Harris confirmed before cackling, “I probably shouldn’t have said that.” Want more from Pat Gray?To enjoy more of Pat's biting analysis and signature wit as he restores common sense to a senseless world, subscribe to BlazeTV — the largest multi-platform network of voices who love America, defend the Constitution, and live the American dream.
