A well-known statistician, Nate Silver, shared on Sunday two dozen reasons why he believes former President Donald Trump could defeat Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. In a post to his online newsletter, the “Silver Bulletin,” Silver explained how he wanted to provide a “laundry list” of factors that favor Trump to counter the notion that this year’s White House race is Harris’ to lose. The list was published less than three weeks out from Election Day as betting markets, polls, and Silver Bulletin’s own forecast show Trump gaining momentum and leading Harris in key battleground states. Silver said Harris is favored to win the popular vote, but he stressed Republicans are favored by a 2-point Electoral College “bias” that is “inherently difficult for Democrats to overcome” in close elections. Other reasons focused on the economy, including high inflation, voter “perceptions” that lag “objective data,” and “nostalgia” for the “relatively strong” economy under Trump before the COVID pandemic hit. Silver noted that incumbent parties are doing “very poorly” worldwide, populism is “often a highly effective strategy,” and illegal immigration “increased substantially” in recent years as backlash to it grew. He said Harris lacks a “viable strategy” for explaining her changing stances and has to contend with a late start to her run as well as taking in some of the staff from President Joe Biden’s “poorly-run” campaign. Silver said voter “objections” related to Biden’s advanced age before he dropped out of the 2024 race ultimately “neuters what should have been one of Harris’s best issues about Trump’s age and cognitive fitness.” Harris, seeking to become the first woman president, was also mentioned as a reason why Trump might win, as Silver explained that in the 2016 election, “undecideds broke heavily against Hillary Clinton, and she underperformed her polls.” Silver listed low trust in the media, Trump’s effectiveness at “convincing voters that he’s on their side even if his election would not be in their best interest,” and the Democrats focusing so much on January 6. There is also the Democrats’ “college-educated consultant class” having “poor instincts” for appealing to the mass public while Trump has “done more to cultivate support among ‘weird’ marginal voting groups.” Further reasons included how the world has become “more unstable” under Biden, the Israel-Hamas war fracturing the Democratic base, and Harris running on “vibes” while struggling to “articulate” her vision. Silver also listed more Left-leaning third-party candidates than Right-leaning ones, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. endorsing Trump, Elon Musk backing Trump, and Trump surviving two assassination attempts.

Opening statements have been made in the trial of Richard Allen, who is accused of killing two teenage girls on a Delphi, Indiana, hiking trail back in 2017. Richard Allen, 50, is charged with the kidnapping and murder of 13-year-old Abby Williams and 14-year-old Libby German. Prosecutors, in their opening statements, alleged that Allen is the man seen in a video taken by Libby telling the girls to go “down the hill.” The video was recorded as the girls crossed the Monon High Bridge. Their bodies were found nearby the day after they went missing. Carroll County Prosecutor Nicholas McLeland said during opening statements on Friday that Allen forced the girls down the hill by gunpoint. He described the crime scene to the jury. “You’re going to see the crime scene,” he said, according to ABC News. “It was a gruesome scene. Libby was completely naked. Her throat was cut, blood all over. Abby’s throat was also cut.” Defense attorney Andrew Baldwin argued that the state’s investigation was botched and that cell phone evidence shows Allen couldn’t have been the one to kill the girls. Baldwin said the prosecution claimed the girls were killed by 4 p.m. on February 13, 2017, and their bodies were not moved prior to their discovery the next day. Allen, who admitted to being on the trail the day the girls were killed, left the area by 2:15 p.m., according to his legal team citing phone records. The idea that a mass-produced bullet cycled through a mass-produced gun could create a unique marking is also dubious, according to Stephen Gutowski, a certified firearms instructor and reporter who founded The Reload. “The forensic techniques used by crime labs to match specific guns to specific bullets have come under heavy scrutiny in recent years,” Gutowski told The Daily Wire in 2022. “So, I think it’s important to examine claims like this with a healthy dose of skepticism. The idea you could match a mark on the rim of a casing to a specific gun’s extractor seems dubious to me.” “I could see an argument that an extractor on a certain model of gun could leave a unique marking on an unspent round if the round were cycled through the firearm since the extractor may have dimensions that are different from other firearms,” he added. “However, the Sig Sauer P226 has been an incredibly popular firearm for decades, and it’s unlikely the mass-produced extractors included on each pistol would leave a marking that’s obviously distinguishable from another P226.” After his arrest, Allen admitted to the murders, but his defense has argued that his mental health declined in prison and the confessions can’t be trusted.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz claimed on Monday that Vice President Kamala Harris worked at McDonald’s and that former President Donald Trump “disrespect[ed]” McDonald’s workers by showing up at a restaurant over the weekend and serving customers. Walz made the remarks during an interview on ABC News’ “The View” after Trump stopped at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania to serve food to supporters. “She actually worked in a McDonald’s,” Walz claimed without evidence. “She didn’t go and pander and disrespect McDonald’s workers by standing there in your red tie and take a picture.” “His policies are the ones that undermine those very workers that were in that McDonald’s, whether it’s home ownership, health care, reproductive rights or cost of products,” he claimed. With just two weeks remaining in the 2024 campaign, the Pennsylvania Senate matchup between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and Republican Dave McCormick has moved to a “toss-up,” according to the Cook Political Report. The shift toward the Republican candidate took place after an Atlas Intel poll was released last week, showing McCormick up by 1 point on Casey. McCormick has cut into Casey’s lead over the past month in the RealClearPolitics average of polls. At the end of September, McCormick trailed Casey by five points, but as of Monday afternoon, the Republican is only down by 1.9 points, per the RCP average. The Pennsylvania race becomes the fourth Senate “toss-up,” along with Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin, according to Cook Political Report. All of the Senate seats in the “toss-up” races are currently held by Democrats. Republicans are favored to flip the seats in Montana and West Virginia, which would give them a 51-seat majority assuming they hold onto the seats in races where they are projected to win. The best path for Democrats to maintain control of the Senate would require that the party holds onto each of the “toss-up” seats while also pulling off an upset in one of the “lean or likely Republican” races: Montana, Texas, or Florida.
