DEVELOPING: Two Deceased, Hundreds Rescued After Severe Flooding In New Mexico

Flooding in Roswell, New Mexico, has resulted in two deaths and dozens of hospitalizations. The city experienced historic rainfall that brought severe flooding on Saturday night. “The New Mexico National Guard worked through the overnight hours, along with other county and state agencies, responding to the flooding in and around Roswell,” the New Mexico National Guard posted to Facebook. “As of this release, the NM Guard and other agencies have rescued 290 people. 38 were taken to local hospitals,” it added. Prayers for our small town Roswell NM, so many people are now trying to figure out where to go, still looking for family members and we are still checking on as many elders as we can. We are told to expecting more flooding rains this evening. pic.twitter.com/aoPdlNKphd — DKJ (@denese_karla) October 20, 2024 Apparently my hometown flooded last night??? Why is this much water in Roswell, NM??? pic.twitter.com/pIDqGZDk0F — Curved Planet (@CurvedPlanet) October 20, 2024 KOAT reports: According to officials from the city of Roswell and New Mexico State Police, two people have died as a result of the flooding in the city. City officials also say several vehicles were swept away in a river channel. The National Weather Service reports seven people were rescued after a car was swept away in flood water. The National Guard has also rescued nearly 300 people from floodwaters. According to the National Weather Service, 5.78″ of rain fell at the Roswell Air Center. This is a new all-time record for the city. The previous record was set in 1901. “We feel for the New Mexicans affected by this latest flooding in our state,” said Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, the NM National Guard’s Adjutant General. “Because of the previous flooding in Ruidoso, we have the experience and were ready for this. We’ve worked all night, and continue to work with swift water rescue teams and other partner agencies to help our fellow citizens get to safety,” Aguilar added. What’s going on in Roswell, New Mexico? Their town is flooded, and people are having to be rescued. They haven’t had this much rain since 1901. I know, it’s just another coincidence? I wonder why? Does this county have something of value. Anyone? pic.twitter.com/Pjf5KhJ8wO — Lisa (@Lisahudsonchow7) October 20, 2024 People trapped in Flash Flooding in Roswell, New Mexico How? pic.twitter.com/jzZsBGHnMA — Concerned Citizen (@BGatesIsaPyscho) October 20, 2024 Per CNN: The Spring River in the Cahoon area rose to dangerous levels, stranding several vehicles under bridges along the river, with water entering homes in the area. Water levels have since receded in some areas, but remain high in downtown Roswell and throughout town along the Spring River channel, according to the city. “Many motorists became stranded when their vehicles got stuck in flood waters on many streets,” the City of Roswell said in a statement. “Some people had to await rescue on top of their vehicles that were covered by water. Some vehicles were swept by the water into the river channel. One fatality has been confirmed as a result of the flooding. Search-and-rescue efforts are still underway this morning.” Videos posted by Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington show him standing on top of his vehicle on Sunday around midnight, surrounded by floodwaters that swept his car away along with other stranded vehicles. People’s houses and cars flooded, Herrington says in the videos, which also show floodwater rescues. WATCH:

Everything you need to know for voting in the 2024 election

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM The 2024 election is just around the corner, with Americans voting early next month. This historic election will feature a presidential campaign as well as races for federal, state, and municipal governments. Whether you plan to vote in person, by mail, or early, you must be ready. From validating your registration status to knowing your polling place and what’s on the ballot, here’s everything you need to know to make your vote count this election season. Are you registered to vote? Check your voter registration status before going to the polls. In the 2024 election, Americans will go to the polls on Tuesday, November 5, to vote in a historic presidential contest and for several federal, state, and municipal posts. But first, voter registration is necessary. Except for North Dakota, which does not require voter registration, each state has its own set of registration regulations and deadlines. Some states, such as California and Maine, allow for same-day registration at the polls, whilst others require registration up to 30 days before Election Day. The US Vote Foundation‘s online tool can help you determine the particular deadline for your state. Depending on your state, you can register in a variety of ways. Many states allow online registration, but you can also register by mail, phone, or at your local election office. You must be a United States citizen, at least 18 years old on Election Day, and meet your state’s eligibility criteria, which may differ. For example, some states deny voting rights to those who are already incarcerated or have certain felony convictions. If you are unsure whether you have already registered, you may easily check online. If you have moved, changed your name, or changed your party membership since the previous election, you must update your registration. Moving to a new state? Do not forget to re-register in your new location. How will you vote? In 2024, voters will have several alternatives for casting their ballots. You can vote in person on Election Day, early, or by mail (commonly known as absentee voting). Your selections may vary according to where you reside. In states like California and New Jersey, you do not need a reason to vote by mail, but in Alabama and Kentucky, you must provide a genuine excuse, such as being out of the country or being sick. It is critical to request your mail ballot early and keep track of deadlines for returning it or dropping it off at approved locations. You can use the US Vote Foundation‘s tool to find these deadlines for your state. If you have a hectic schedule on Election Day or will be out of town, early in-person voting is a convenient choice. Some states, including Vermont, allow early voting up to 45 days before the election. Check the website of your local election board for information on your state’s early voting procedures. If you plan to vote in person on Election Day, make sure you know where your polling station is. Entering your name and address on your state’s Board of Elections website or Vote.org can quickly provide you with this information. Polling stations are typically open from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and close between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., depending on where you reside. Remember that many states have rules allowing employees to take time off to vote. However, the details of these laws differ. Employees in some states may not be compensated for time off, whilst in others, documentation of voting is necessary. Who is on your ballot? This election season, the focus will be on the presidential contest, with Vice President Kamala Harris representing the Democrats and former President Donald Trump leading the Republican Party. But don’t overlook the other key races and subjects when deciding your vote. You may vote for governor, state lawmakers, and local politicians such as mayor or district attorney. Ballotpedia provides example ballots for each district to help you understand what you will be voting on. They also clarify any ballot measures—often worded in complicated legalese—so you know what you’re voting for. Stay informed by visiting candidates’ websites, watching debates, and following local news coverage to learn where each candidate stands on the subjects that are most important to you. What to expect on election day Make sure you’re ready on Election Day. First, validate your polling place’s hours of operation, which can vary by state and county. You will be able to vote as long as you are in line before the polls close, even if it takes some time. When you arrive, a poll worker will compare your name to the list of registered voters. If they can’t find your name, ask if they can look up a statewide list or confirm your polling location. If you are still not on the voter rolls but believe you are, you can request a provisional ballot. After the polls close, electoral officials will confirm your registration. Some states, such as Indiana and Wisconsin, require voters to provide ID before voting. First-time voters in several states may additionally be required to present identification. The National Conference of State Legislatures website contains information on your state’s particular voter ID laws. Voting is a basic process. Poll workers will direct you to a voting machine or paper ballot station and are available to answer any inquiries. Voters with disabilities can seek adjustments, such as a chair to sit in while they wait or a voting machine that helps people with eyesight or mobility issues. Every polling station is expected to have at least one machine to assist voters with impairments. It’s also critical to be mindful of voter intimidation, which is unlawful. This could include violent behavior, challenging your eligibility to vote, preventing access to the polls, or circulating misleading information about voting. If you encounter or see any of this behavior, please notify local election officials or the Election Protection Hotline at 1-866-OUR-VOTE or 1-888-VE-Y-VOTA (en Español). You may confidently vote this November if you are prepared and understand your rights. The post Everything you need to know for voting in the 2024 election first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

New cervical cancer treatment brings risk of mortality down by 40%

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM In a watershed moment for women’s health, a new cervical cancer treatment regimen has been discovered to reduce the risk of death by 40 percent. Experts describe it as the greatest significant improvement in disease treatment in more than 25 years. Cervical cancer, the fourth most prevalent cancer in women worldwide, claims the lives of over 350,000 people each year. Despite advances in screening and therapy, the cancer frequently recurs, especially in women in their thirties. A decade-long study led by academics at University College London (UCL) found that a relatively simple modification to existing treatment protocols could considerably enhance survival rates. “This is the biggest gain in survival since the adoption of chemoradiation in 1999,” stated Dr. Mary McCormack, the trial’s primary investigator at UCL. She continued: “Every improvement in survival for a cancer patient is important, especially when the treatment is well-tolerated and given for a relatively short time, allowing women to get back to their normal lives relatively quickly.” The study: chemotherapy before chemoradiation The novel method entails giving patients a brief course of chemotherapy before they receive chemoradiation, which is the existing standard for cervical cancer treatment. The experiment, which was called the Interlace trial, enrolled 500 women across five countries, including the UK, Mexico, India, Italy, and Brazil. Cancer Research UK funded the study, which focused on women with locally advanced cervical cancer that had not progressed to other organs. Participants were randomly assigned to either the new combo therapy or regular chemoradiation treatment. The experimental group received carboplatin and paclitaxel treatment for six weeks before receiving the standard chemoradiation (weekly cisplatin and irradiation). The findings were startling: 80 percent of women who underwent the new program survived five years, compared to 72 percent in the control group. Furthermore, 72 percent of women in the novel treatment group saw no cancer recurrence, compared to 64 percent in the conventional therapy group. The experiment discovered that adding this initial round of chemotherapy lowered the chance of mortality by 40 percent and the risk of cancer recurrence by 35 percent. “A short course of induction chemotherapy prior to standard chemoradiation treatment greatly boosts overall survival and reduces the risk of relapse in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer,” explained Dr. McCormack. Hope for women with cervical cancer Women like Abbie Halls, a 27-year-old Londoner, are already feeling the effects of the new treatment. Halls has been cancer-free for nine years since beginning the new treatment plan. “I’m not sure if I’d be here without the treatment that I received,” she shared. “I’m happy that I could play a part in advancing the research, which I hope is going to save the lives of many more women in years to come.” Cervical cancer is a major worldwide health concern, especially in low-income countries with inadequate access to screening and treatment. Every year, there are around 660,000 new cases worldwide, and the disease kills hundreds of thousands of women. This new leadership, however, provides promise for a better future. A call for global adoption With such encouraging outcomes, researchers are calling for the global use of this novel therapy strategy. “It has already been adopted by some cancer centers, and there’s no reason that this shouldn’t be offered to all patients undergoing chemoradiation for this cancer,” said Dr. McCormack. The treatment’s simplicity is one of its most positive qualities. As Dr. Iain Foulkes, executive director of research and innovation at Cancer Research UK, noted, “The simple act of adding induction chemotherapy to the start of chemoradiation treatment for cervical cancer has delivered remarkable results.” He further stated that this treatment makes use of current, low-cost medications, making it more accessible to women in low-income communities. As the fight against cervical cancer continues, this fresh approach represents a significant advancement. The combination of existing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments offers a practical and successful approach, with the potential to save thousands of lives and give hope to women all over the world. WRAPPING MEDIA WEEK: Al Sharpton’s Pillow-Soft Non-Interview of Kamala Harris

WRAPPING MEDIA WEEK: Al Sharpton’s Pillow-Soft Non-Interview of Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris’s big media week featured friendly visits as well as a couple of rough spots. However, the Democrat nominee was assured a super-soft landing this week by sitting down with race arsonist-turned MSNBC host Al Sharpton. We watched Harris’s sitdown with Rev so you don’t have to. You may decide to feel some kind of way for us here at the MRC but remember that, as Hyman Roth told Don Michael Corleone in The Godfather II: This is the business we’ve chosen. The interview opens with Harris being offered another opportunity to differentiate herself from the Biden Administration, specifically on foreign policy. Harris’s response offers nothing different from what we’ve heard so far.  First Sharpton question to VP Harris is, yet again, the "would you do anything different from Biden" but specific as to Israel-Hamas in light of the death of Yahya Sinwar. Again, Harris offers no differentiation from Biden. pic.twitter.com/2F1KwH5g4k — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 20, 2024 Sharpton’s second question elicits a response to President Trump calling her “a sh*t vice president.” There is no followup to Harris’s word salad, and no followup. Sharpton asks Harris to react to Trump's "? VP" remarks. Harris reverts to a word salad on the norms, and her "seal of the presidency" stump speech applause line. No followup, no mention of the left's incendiary rhetoric. pic.twitter.com/Q4jYbsUFLc — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 20, 2024 Moving to community-specific matters, Sharpton evokes the memory of Shirley Chisolm (which Harris did unsuccessfully during her 2019 campaign), and provides her an opportunity to walk back the “Kamala the Cop” narrative, some of which she’s repeated on the campaign trail in positioning herself as the law-and-order candidate. Different messages for different audiences? Sharpton and Harris try to bat down the male support narrative (lack thereof) with a Shirley Chisolm callback. Sharpton lays structure for Harris to walk back from "Kamala the Cop" pic.twitter.com/hTherYrO8o — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 20, 2024 Sharpton’s fourth question invites Harris to explain, in plain language, how the Black community would be impacted by her economic policies. Having exhausted her talking points, Harris reverts to her stump speech attacks against Trump. Sharpton asks Harris to explain the potential positive impacts of her policies to the Black community, in plain language. After exhausting her word salads, Harris pivots to attacking Trump, closes with price controls and "opportunity economy" pic.twitter.com/u5f6EbDWTh — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 20, 2024 The fifth and final question asks Harris to reflect on what History might say about her 50 years from now, Mercifully, this “interview” is over. Harris is asked to reflect on what History might say about her 50 years from now. pic.twitter.com/dEUjBfgRcw — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) October 20, 2024 On her birthday, the vice president catches a break. Instead of an interview, she got a foot massage and tongue bath airing on the most sycophantic Regime network. This is the business we’ve chosen.

CBS News SEETHES Over Trump McDonald’s Workday, Dismisses As ‘Political Stunt’

In keeping with an earlier promise, former President Donald Trump visited a Pennsylvania McDonald’s for a 15-minute shift at the fry station and drive-through. The CBS Evening News came unglued. Watch as correspondent Caitlyn Huey-Burns dismisses the Trump workday as little more than a “political stunt”: CAITLIN HUEY-BURNS: Former President Donald Trump put on an apron today to pull off a political stunt in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Working the fryer to try and claim, without any evidence, that Vice President Kamala Harris didn't work at a McDonald's while in college as she said she did. DONALD TRUMP: She never worked at McDonald's. One imagines the hushed, reverential tones that Huey-Burns might deploy were Kamala Harris to take a shift working the Baby ChopVac 9000 at the local Planned Parenthood. She might even call it an example of Harris being relatable. She certainly wouldn’t sneeringly call it a “stunt”.  But, alas, this is Donald Trump. At a McDonald’s. Doing something we used to call “retail politics”. And the Regime Media, in their perpetual bitterness, are bitter at the fact Trump can pull these things off without running away from unscheduled human contact.  In this bitterness, Huey-Burns is left to firefight for Kamala Harris’s college job at McDonald’s which, without evidence, she claims to have worked.  If it weren’t for Regime Media, we’d have none at all.  Click “expand” to view the full transcript of the aforementioned report as aired on the CBS Weekend News on Sunday, October 20th, 2024: CBS WEEKEND NEWS 10/20/24 6:02 PM JERICKA DUNCAN: We begin tonight with both presidential candidates barnstorming in battleground states in a push to get out the vote. Harris marked her 60th birthday, making two stops at two churches in Georgia. Stevie Wonder joined her at one of them to sing “Happy Birthday.” Meanwhile, Donald Trump made a brief stop at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania before heading to a rally in that state. CBS's Caitlin Huey-Burns is covering it all for us and leads us off tonight in Pittsburgh. Caitlin, good evening to you. CAITLIN HUEY-BURNS: Good evening to you, Jericka. Well, the stark contrast between these two candidates was on full display today, with Kamala Harris working to turn out churchgoers in Georgia and Donald Trump working at a McDonald's near Philadelphia.  Former President Donald Trump put on an apron today to pull off a political stunt in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Working the fryer to try and claim, without any evidence, that Vice President Kamala Harris didn't work at a McDonald's while in college as she said she did. DONALD TRUMP: She never worked at McDonald's. HUEY-BURNS: At a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh Saturday, Trump delivered some of his harshest insults of Harris yet. TRUMP” You’re a (shit) Vice president. The worst -- you're the worst vice president.  HUEY-BURNS: And went on a lengthy and lewd riff about the legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, who is also from Latrobe. TRUMP: This is a guy that was all man. This man was strong and tough. And I refuse to say it, but when he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there, they said, oh, my god. That's unbelievable. HUEY-BURNS: Today the vice president reacted to Trump's name-calling. KAMALA HARRIS: The American people deserve so much better. HUEY-BURNS: Harris started her day in another battleground, Georgia. She attended church with Stevie Wonder and marked her 60th birthday. HARRIS: We each as individuals and as a community have the power to make decisions through these next 16 days that will be about a statement about what kind of country do we want to live in. HUEY-BURNS: Both candidates are here in Pennsylvania this evening. Harris will be campaigning near Philadelphia with Liz Cheney tomorrow. And Trump is back here in Pittsburgh to attend a Steelers game tonight. Jericka. DUNCAN: Caitlin, thank you.

On PBS, Susan Glasser Sees Trump as 'Soviet'-Style Threat to Democracy

On Friday’s edition of Washington Week with The Atlantic, it was The New Yorker’s Susan Glasser who dished out the most inflammatory anti-Trump statements, trying to literally scare up Democratic votes as the Harris campaign lists less than three weeks before the presidential election. Glasser could not believe it's possible now that Trump's going to be "returned to power despite everything":  SUSAN GLASSER:  And what’s remarkable right now is that there is at least an even chance, if not better than an even chance, of that happening. And yet this vibe that you’re talking about, you know, we've lost the summer of joy. It seems to me we’ve moved way beyond that. Kamala Harris is no longer making fun of Donald Trump and saying he’s weird. She's saying he`s a threat to democracy, as we know it. And Trump has escalated his rhetoric in a way that seems determined to prove the point that she’s making. FRANKLIN FOER, The Atlantic: Just how do you account for that apathy? GLASSER: Trump fatigue, I guess, is a real thing. We’ve been overwhelmed with a fugue of lies and misinformation and scandal and disinformation for so long, we all know people who've just tuned out of that until perhaps just now. Democrats, I have noticed a very marked shift just in the last couple of weeks, a dawning realization that a Trump second term is a true possibility. My question is, is this realization coming too late for them in the election cycle? After saying “What`s really remarkable about that is that it`s a strategy that relies on people ignoring Donald Trump and his inability to communicate even basic information,” pointing to his talk at the Chicago Economic Club where he threw out numbers on hypothetical tariffs he was threatening, Glasser whined about “the world’s richest man” Elon Musk’s support for Trump and “the influence of money in politics,” especially “a small handful of the wealthiest people of the world” supporting Trump, as if the Kamala Harris campaign wasn’t outspending Trump by a large margin. After Foer cited the former president's infamous statement about having “radical left lunatics…handled, if necessary, by National Guard, or if really necessary, by the military,” Glasser went full Soviet (which may be preferable to going full “fascist,” as Harris herself recently did when describing Trump). GLASSER: That Donald Trump is the man who spent the entire last year of his presidency trying to use the military against American people in the streets exercising their First Amendment rights. Where Donald Trump has escalated the rhetoric, and, by the way, he's often used the language of pure dictatorship when he has called his enemies vermin, enemies of the people, this is the language, that is resonant to anyone who studied Russian history. It comes straight from the Soviet past…. Speaking of "escalating rhetoric," claiming Trump somehow spent every day of 2020 trying to use soldiers against Americans speaking freely is a whopper. He talked about sending in troops to rioting scenes after George Floyd's death. That didn't last all year. Glasser even sounded exasperated that Trump might once-again support Israel if he is reelected: "Come on! Like we’re pretending as if Donald Trump has a meaningful position on the world. What he did in his first term in office was outsource American policy to Netanyahu and the far right in Israel…." The same awful “far right” that’s eliminated three major terrorist heads in three months.
